Join the MN Coronation Street thread today and you too could have an exciting lifestyle where you earn your own money, set your own hours and most definitely do not end up eating the chocolate off the Bounty at the bottom of the Celebrations tub out of desperation! Absolutely not a pyramid selling scheme, hun!

No spoilers, but interesting inside info from several soaps:

Absolutely dying to know who the male cast member is! Grin

That link makes very interesting reading it explains why once strong female characters have a personality transplant at around 50 (Gail, Sally, Jenny) Soapland is not any easy place for older women.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 18/02/2021 14:36

The author/agent must be fucking awesome at what she does to have been able to convince soaps to bring back a dead character who was a) a woman and b) already over 50 when they were notorious forgetting rid of them at that age. I love that she represented older soap actresses like Beverly collard, Gillian Taylforth, and Amanda Barrie.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 18/02/2021 14:36

*Callard!

It’s interesting, because at the time, the press coverage was very much that EastEnders really pushed to lure Gillian Taylforth back, rather than the idea being pitched to them. It also sounds like Blake lobbied for Claire King’s return to Emmerdale, when that was publicly labelled as a big coup for the show.

A lot of older soap women do end up as comic relief. Deirdre Barlow is another example that springs to mind. She spent much of the 80s and 90s in tears over various traumas - in later years she tended to get much more light-hearted material.

Oooh! I wonder what the truth is!

Akire · 18/02/2021 15:09

Wait are you discussing semi spoiler without naming the person? But it’s going be a dead person come back? puts fingers in ears

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/02/2021 15:13

Don’t worry @Akire - no spoilers here Wink The article is about Kathy Beale’s return from the dead in EastEnders a few years ago.

I'd love alma to return.

I can't be doing with Eastenders, ever since lofty left.

Akire · 18/02/2021 15:15

As we say on the Eastenders thread are they dead or dead dead?

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 18/02/2021 15:25

I think Alma is definitely dead dead!

Wedlock · 18/02/2021 15:30

Alma is dead and the actress who played her is dead. That would be quite the feat bringing her back.

Roussette · 18/02/2021 15:35

Have to say, don't wanna be morbid, but Alma's deathbed scene was one of the best ever.

oh heck that sounds awful, you know what I mean

MsMiaWallace · 18/02/2021 15:43

Amanda Barrie who played Alma isn't dead!

Wedlock · 18/02/2021 15:48

Oh. Sorry, Amanda! Blush

She's probably at home with her feet up, living her best life and I've got her 6 feet under!

eggandonion · 18/02/2021 15:57

She turned up on a family history DNA thing, I think she was related to Jenny? She was related to someone of the street.
Alma dying, and hayley, they were tragic. And no cardi ladies to help us through.

desperatehousewife21 · 18/02/2021 16:44

She’s also been on those ‘down Corrie memory lane’ type programmes recently too I believe.

I liked Alma, Mike, all the Baldwins, I liked Corrie from around 1997-2008ish while I was growing up. It’s all so meh now.

Yes, distantly related to Sally Ann Matthews.

Amanda Barrie was on a couple of shows recently paying tribute to Barbara Windsor. She looks well.

Speaking of cardi ladies, did the situation with Daniel and the cardi lady just fizzle out? I don’t recall how it ended (as it was both daft and boring).

eggandonion · 19/02/2021 09:39

I think she had money problems, Daniel helped sort that somehow, and she went to lytham or somewhere. She was quite nice, in her own way.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 19/02/2021 09:43

Isn’t she on one of these ‘Put them in a desert island and see who shags first’ shows in real life now?

OP posts:
eggandonion · 19/02/2021 09:46

Does she look back fondly on her cardi days. I'd let her come back to the street for a visit, poor Daniel is locked down with Bertie.
