Is going too OTT on the woo and melodrama for my tastes.

OP posts:
Maireas · 09/01/2021 15:17

A comical moment!

ellenanora5 · 09/01/2021 17:29

Bloody fucking power cut Angry the power is only back a few minutes, I've missed it Sad aaarrrggghhh!!!

I've trawled Netflix looking for it and no joy Sad

I hope you all enjoyed it, shorts and donkey are in the bin Grin

Maireas · 09/01/2021 17:31

It'll be on iplayer?

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 09/01/2021 17:54

David Farrar had incredibly beautiful eyes, didn't he?
I do wonder if he'd somehow upset the costume designer though. The shorts, the jesus sandals, the Worzel Gummidge hat!

Alessandro Nivola had the right combination of rugged and dignified. And proper riding boots for his proper horse.

Maireas · 09/01/2021 17:58

Absolutely. The costume department - and the animal manager - must really have hated David Farrar!

ellenanora5 · 09/01/2021 19:03

I can't get iPlayer where I am Maireas, hopefully I'll find it somewhere, I'm flipping raging was really looking forward to it.

Maireas · 09/01/2021 19:06

How annoying! Hopefully it'll be on some channel or streaming service soon.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 09/01/2021 19:22

I didn’t see it although it is recorded. (Had to deal with a friend’s bereavement as they couldn’t cope)

I remember the Farrarman and the my little labrador pony.

If he’d have done that to my old girl she’d have had his jewels.

Sorry I missed this with you. I’ll be the saddo watching it by themselves. later. With the red lippage. And a wee drink. (For toasting purposes) 👼 🕯

Maireas · 09/01/2021 19:34

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. You are very kind to help her Flowers.
Yes, relax with your lippy and wimple and gaze upon the rare beauty of Mr Dean in a yak skin coat and Worzel Gummidge hat, riding a labrador in a film studio in Ealing.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 09/01/2021 19:43

maireas

Ah - I’m just a practical person who can compartmentalise and deal with things and people well in a crisis. I don’t have a skill in life but that I can do (and break my heart later when no one sees)

Your last paragraph gave me a much needed laugh - you have a way with words my friend 🌟

PhoebeSnow · 09/01/2021 19:52

David Farrar had violet eyes, like Liz Taylor.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 09/01/2021 19:57

I’m sure that made it all better for the labrapony Grin

Maireas · 09/01/2021 20:06

Dear lord, Sheldon - the shorts. I'd forgotten how bad they were. As Clanger said above, he must have upset the costume department.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 09/01/2021 20:11

I would say I can’t wait maireas

I suspect that isn’t really the case! Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/01/2021 20:12

I haven't read the book but something I just saw online said that the tiny pony and the even tinier shorts and the dreadful hat are all in the book.

Watched it earlier. Kathleen Byron was so good. So was Deborah Kerr.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 09/01/2021 20:27

Well they certainly captured it in the film. Grin

I confess I haven’t read the book. I will take the shame Blush

IrenetheQuaint · 09/01/2021 22:04

The hat has a starring role in the book!

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 09/01/2021 22:12

Hat too?

Mercy me. Grin

I can believe all that though. If someone tells me Greg Wallace is in the book I will eat my yak duvet cover.

PhoebeSnow · 16/01/2021 09:23

The Nun’s Story starring Audrey Hepburn and Peter Finch is on BBC 2 this afternoon. It’s excellent

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/01/2021 10:52

Thanks, @PhoebeSnow, I love that film, and am also a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn. Grim old day here, so wasn't going to go out, and now I can settle down on the sofa with the divine Audrey!

I'm not a Catholic or high Anglican, so have little experience of nuns, but there are so many good dramas with nuns as central figures. Black Narcissus, The Nun's Story, The Sound of Music, Derry Girls, Call the Midwife - there must be more. They feature in Father Ted here and there too, of course, and there's a significant supporting role for a nun in The Lady Vanishes (the classic 1930s one with Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave and Dame May Whitty - I love that film). Good Omens, The Omen. Never seen Sister Act.

I was trying to remember the name of a film I saw years ago which paralleled Watergate but set in a convent. It must be Nasty Habits, starring Glenda Jackson. Can remember very little about it except feeling that it should have been funnier, given the splendid cast.

PhoebeSnow · 16/01/2021 12:45

Gasp0de, yes it’s Nasty Habits based on The Abbess Of Crewe by Muriel Spark.

There are other Nun films like
Lilies of the Field and Heaven Knows, Mr Allison with Deborah Kerr are both good . Conspiracy Of Hearts with Lilli Palmer and Sylvia Syms is lovely.
Not a Nun film , but a real heartwarming true story is The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness about a missionary in China who helped stop the vile practice of feet binding

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/01/2021 20:31

I watched The Nun's Story. Audrey Hepburn was robbed, not to get the Best Actress Oscar! She was wonderful, and so was Peter Finch, and I loved the fact that the story didn't take the obvious direction there. Based on a true story, apparently. Thanks again for the alert, @PhoebeSnow!

PhoebeSnow · 16/01/2021 21:25

You’re welcome! The Nun’s Story was written by Kathryn Hulme.

MercyBooth · 19/01/2021 02:34

Just watched Black Narcissus on i player. Looks like the BBC have put the original film with Deborah Kerr on there too.
