Is going too OTT on the woo and melodrama for my tastes.

OP posts:
Honeyroar · 27/12/2020 22:04

Oh we’re enjoying it.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/12/2020 22:04

Never seen the film or read the book so didn't know what to expect

Funkypolar · 27/12/2020 22:08

I loved the original film, enjoyed the first episode of this.

Clawdy · 27/12/2020 22:09

Enjoyed it, it was a bit different so far from the usual storylines. Sister Blanche looked so like Rowan Atkinson, I had to Google afterwards to see if she was his daughter! She is about the only really nice character in it at the moment, but the others are interesting.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 27/12/2020 22:10

I remember absolutely loving the film when I watched it at a teen but never sat through it as an adult.

This has the same feel already I’m excited !

Nuie · 27/12/2020 22:12

Enjoying it so far. Never watched the film so it’s a completely unknown story for me. Gorgeous scenery!

nutmegofconsolation2 · 27/12/2020 22:13

Utter bilge.

Honeyroar · 27/12/2020 22:14

Isn’t it @nuie absolutely beautiful mountains.

Bloodypunkrockers · 27/12/2020 22:14

Never watched the film but I loved this

I can't wait for the next episode

moglovesmincepies · 27/12/2020 22:24

Never seen/read it but that hour flew by! Can't wait for tomorrow

mrwalkensir · 27/12/2020 22:26

very pleased to see people that I've always thought of as famous in this (who aren't) and my daughter's mate worked on it. Rosie Cavaliero & Karen Bryson should be big names

Djouce · 27/12/2020 22:30

The novel is brilliant, and the Powell and Pressburger film is a masterpiece (well, with the exception of Jean Simmons in blackface). I wasn’t convinced by this. Maybe just because it’s hard to remake something so definitive. It feels at times like a shot by shot remake.

Honeyroar · 27/12/2020 22:32

I’d never heard of this book, despite being a bookworm!

Bejazzled · 27/12/2020 22:35

Apart from Mr Bean in a wimple I quite enjoyed it. Just a bit of escapism.

Djouce · 27/12/2020 22:37

@Honeyroar

I’d never heard of this book, despite being a bookworm!
I recommend it, and her other novel about nuns, In This House of Brede — some people might know her children’s novel The Diddakoi, which was televised by the BBC as Kizzy.
Deux · 27/12/2020 22:38

I loved this. I’m unfamiliar with the story so it’s a wonderful escape. Looking forward to tomorrow night.

woodhill · 27/12/2020 22:38

Rumer Godden

Holothane · 27/12/2020 22:41

I’ve enjoyed too I’ll check out the novel too.

chipshopElvis · 27/12/2020 22:42

Djouce, Peacock Spring was adapted by the BBC as well. Love Rumer Godden though have never read or watched Black Narciccus. Enjoyed this.

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2020 22:42

Mr Dean is very sexy!
The rest is a bit soapy but watchable.
I'll stick with it for the scenery.

halcyondays · 27/12/2020 23:01

Haven’t watched it yet, have started the book so will finish that first.

TellingBone · 27/12/2020 23:01

I was preparing myself to hate it because the Powell & Pressburger film is one of my all time favourites. Plus I was expecting the BBC to bring in some jarring updates as they did when they ruined the Agatha Christies.

But I liked it. The Ayah character is portrayed much better than in the original. One minor quibble - the P&P version was masterful in the way it conveyed a sense of the relentless, constant, pervasive, pitiless wind that contributed so much to the story's outcome. But having said that I wouldn't have wanted to see a carbon copy of that version.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 27/12/2020 23:12

Goodness. Kizzy. That is a blast from the past.

I think I’m going to have a narcissus oneser viewing.

I’m hoping that I’m going to like it. I loved the film.

Viviennemary · 27/12/2020 23:15

I've got it recorded to watch later. I did see the first film ages ago and thought it was a bit overdone. I wish they'd remake In this House of Brede by same author. The book was great but the film was dire nothing like the original.

colouringindoors · 27/12/2020 23:17

I really enjoyed it, was hoping i could watch ep2 on iplayer but sadly not! Saw the film a long time ago and loved it.
