(Probably for the final, rather than last overall, considering how much we talk Grin)

Last thread here, please check there first as I'm setting this thread up early so we can move over easily later!

I remember that. Oti's butt scored a 10.

To be fair, she choreographed a routine that was appropriate for the skill level of her partner (and then disguised the worst bits using hot pants and wiggling)

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 21/12/2020 08:59

Ahh Swanny bless him. I'd forgotten how complex and difficult that routine was. She certainly doesn't give her celebs an easy ride.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 09:08

Was it complex and difficult? I got the impression that there was a lot of "skipping" between props and fluff to distract from the dance moves.

NoGuestsCIothingOptionaI · 21/12/2020 09:08

She did Dragon esp given I think they ended up with that bloomin awful song only because of the Dreadlock Holiday refrain....I don't like cricket. I love it!

TheDrsDocMartens · 21/12/2020 09:34

I think she does work them hard, no easy ride for a celeb with her but also works to their skills so will bring out the best in them.

I didn’t think Katya was bad with Ed Balls either. She made their dances fun but he had to dance.
Majority of the ‘jokes’ could have done better dancing even if they were out early (bar Anne Widdecombe who didn’t try).

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 21/12/2020 09:43

Soup Dragon I thought trying to time moves on a moving treadmill etc was a pretty big ask compared to how often second rate mate celebs basically stand still while the female pro gyrates around them.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 09:46

Yes, but I think that was to distract from the actual dancing.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 09:46

Very clever IMO.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 09:47

I agree. This is why she is so successful and popular.

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

I think if they'd mentioned Maisie's poor footwork, and had taken off marks for it (I know that's a shocking concept for the judges) we might actually have been able to see how she'd improved over the series.

Instead they said she was fabulous all the time. She was very good from the beginning, I'm not meaning to knock her, but I think that not mentioning her faults probably didn't help her over all.

Shirley was very harsh on her the first few episodes, do you remember when she said Maisie looked nice but the skirt hid a multitude of sins and Maisie’s footwork was bad?
MaryLeeOnHigh · 21/12/2020 09:54

@Bluffinwithmymuffin

Ah, not Jamie or Maisie but I can live with that. Bill's a worthy winner.

Wonder who they'll give to Oti next year?! :)

I think they assumed Bill was the Ed Balls candidate this year, so it's a bit of a problem for them.
MaryLeeOnHigh · 21/12/2020 09:57

@DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes

I wasn't trying to accuse anyone in particular of hate but over the arc of the series I have thought a few comments about Maisie spilled over into "mean girls" territory (I couldn't tell you who made them -I'm not taking notes). As I said all I have to go on is a slightly out of context quote which without any damning context struck me as perfect reasonable (mind you we are family of dyspraxics so I'm proud of my self/ DS if we make from one end of the room to the other without falling over).
There was some pretty vile stuff about Caroline, also.
cologne4711 · 21/12/2020 10:14

Janette always does this. In every series her choreography is designed to showcase HER and not the celebrity. Sorry for HRVY but I’m glad she didn’t win

Yes, I thought this too. Especially with the first dance I didn't actually see him doing anything, it was all her. The show dance was better, but she did acknowledge she had help with the choreography for that, which is probably why HRVY actually shone. I'm not surprised she's never reached the final before.

I didn't actually watch this series but watched the final last night. Thought Maisie was the best but obviously too much of a ringah.

IntermittentParps · 21/12/2020 11:12

BIt late to this but my household was JUBILANT at Bill and Oti winning Grin They're just adorable, they clearly love each other and they were a joy to watch. Loved seeing the QS again, LOVED seeing Rapper's Delight again –so clever and so detailed and full of character –and surprised myself by liking the showdance (I can't usually stand people dancing to Queen); Bill acted the fading showman so well and I think the paso was one of his best dances, so thought it was a great idea to put a lot of paso in it.

Harvey's showdance was shit – bitty, frenetic, had no real idea what dances he was purportedly doing. And didn't feel like a music festival in the least. I never got the fuss about his jive. The AS was good but it's so arrogant to dance to a song about how amazing you are.

Maisie had a terrific night; loved the samba and it was good to see that utterly charming QS again. That was her best moment IMO. Didn't really like the showdance; a bit too machine-tooled for extracting emotion, and I didn't really get what they were going for with the tiptoeing about and shushing. Her face acting is overstated IMO.

Jamie was the weakest, it's true, but I'm so pleased he made it to the final and stand by what I've said before about how unfailingly gracious and polite he is. He gave a very good and heartfelt tribute to Karen. Good on him.

Loved Nicola and Katya dancing 'properly' together and hope it sent the swivel-eyed loons into conniptions.

Claudia tearing up every time she mentioned the crew set me off too Grin Janette dropped a clanger saying it was wonderful to have the cast's support because there was 'no audience' after Claudia saying the audience was made up of the amazing crew.

Strictly was so needed this year and Bill was the perfect champion.

I’d completely forgotten Swanny- and that routine 😃 I know I’m being ridiculous, but I quite enjoyed it in a weird way.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 21/12/2020 11:51

I loved that they managed to convey their obvious affection for each other without it ever feeling creepy, sleazy or inappropriate just two people clearly enjoying what they were achieving together.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 11:54

Have the BBC explained what happened to Caroline in the group dance? I assume she injured herself or something.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 21/12/2020 12:03

The AS was good but it's so arrogant to dance to a song about how amazing you are.

That's not what "One" is about, to be fair. It's sung and danced to by members of a chorus line about an unnamed and unseen star.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 21/12/2020 12:07

I suppose the programme length was reduced either in the semi or the final by not having a competitive dance when they were all together, e.g. previous swingathons etc. I can't say I missed it, and I always felt it gave an unfair advantage to the more experienced dancers and, probably, to the women slebs who didn't have to worry about leading their partner out of the way of the others.

If it’s sung and danced by a chorus line as in the musical then yes that’s the message.

If it’s done by a lone cleb and partner then it is inescapably smug. I loved it, but it rang like Quasimodo.

Yes, that’s my view too. Context is all.

Caroline was in the group dance, wasn’t she, with that stupid stuffed cat?

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 13:03

Did they change all the "she" references to "he" in the lyrics?

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 13:03

She had disappeared by the end. Johannes was alone in the finale.

EvilRingahBitch · 21/12/2020 13:03

I think they did, but can’t quite remember

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 13:08

They sang "she" in both Week 7 and The Final. So, how is that smug and arrogant?
