YY- Lopez -Rublev could be a good one.
I don't know how the lack of crowds will affect Rafa- did they have spectators in Rome? I can't remember. There were small-ish crowds at RG.

Raahh · 12/02/2021 11:50

Mats is annoying meGrin. Thiem won the match, and most of the discussion is about how wonderful Kyrgios isHmm.

PrivateSpidey · 12/02/2021 12:11

Typical Raahh Hmm

What's up with Novak I wonder? He went off for a bit, then he had the trainer on. Fritz just won the third set.

PrivateSpidey · 12/02/2021 12:12

Sorry, typical about overlooking the actual winner I mean. So often the way!!

Raahh · 12/02/2021 12:22

I was watching Swiatek- I completely forgot the Djok match.

I'm glad he is being pushed a bit, no idea if we will find out there is something wrong with him.

I never believe his 'injuries' these days- not after the shoulder farce in FakeCincy.

Raahh · 12/02/2021 12:24

Oh the crowd are begind Fritz- Djok won't be liking that either- he will be happy to see them leave if this goes the distance.

Goran!

Raahh · 12/02/2021 12:26

Fritz just needs to hang in here, I think- Djok looks like he is struggling.

And Djok he gets through this match- he plays Raonic.

PrivateSpidey · 12/02/2021 12:31

Yep. Milos would have a great chance especially if the courts are playing fast.

Raahh · 12/02/2021 12:39

So odd, now it's gone quiet.

PrivateSpidey · 12/02/2021 12:45

It's so strange isn't it??

Raahh · 12/02/2021 12:53

2 sets all- Come on Taylor!!

PrivateSpidey · 12/02/2021 12:57

Imagine if the crowd had been there when he won that set!!

PrivateSpidey · 12/02/2021 12:58

What a volley by Fritz!

Raahh · 12/02/2021 13:04

It's a shame this isn't happening in the afternoon heat- I think Djok would be a goner.

ooh- someone found the switch for the music.

Raahh · 12/02/2021 13:16
Hmm

I knew Djok would somehow race off with the last set.

Raahh · 12/02/2021 13:21

HmmFeeling better now, is he?

They shouldn't be shaking hands, should they?

Fizzywinegum · 12/02/2021 15:48

Sounds like there were some good matches today - did the crowd just disappear in the Fritz/Djok match? That must have been weird!

I’m glad that Rafa is on late (early here!) tomorrow - that’s my Saturday morning sorted out. I don’t think there were crowds in the earlier stages at Rome but they let some in for the semis and final I think. I think Rafa does prefer to play in front of a crowd (apart from the crazy lady heckler yesterday - I bet she had a sore head this morning Grin)

It does seem strange Djok being pushed so much in the early rounds - I don’t believe in his fake injuries either - maybe Kyrgios is getting to him!

Fizzywinegum · 12/02/2021 16:02

Ok so it looks as if Djok’s injury could be a tear so maybe it is quite serious?

Raahh · 12/02/2021 16:57

Fizzy it was strange- he was fine for 2 sets, then seemed to slip a bit in the 3rd, and was in pain after that. The commentators seemed to think it was his hip, because that was what he was rubbing.

I'm still cynical about him Grin- I suppose Mats had a point, if they gave him anti-inflammatory drugs, they would take a while to 'kick in' which is why he struggled- and then seemed a lot more mobile in the 5th.
I don't think his next match will be an easy one either- (well, I hope not). It is unusual for him to have spent so much time on court so early on.
I hope Rafa is not affected by the lack of crowds- it might favour Norrie, not having a crowd against him

Raahh · 12/02/2021 17:00

And yes, the crowd were just told to leave - must have been about 11.30ish their time, to give them time to get home before the lockdown. After that, it was a bit eerie.

Will be even odder if they have the roof on at all- echoey.

Fizzywinegum · 12/02/2021 17:32

Thanks for the update Raahh - Djok is saying that he might not be able to play his next match but we will see ...

A big stadium (especially with the roof on) will be a bit strange with no crowd - the crowd obviously plays such a big part in matches so it will be interesting to see how it affects different players

I wonder if they’ll be allowed back after the five days?

Raahh · 12/02/2021 18:27
Hmm

I said earlier, after NeckGate, with all the fuss he made about that, and then still managed to win the tournament- I take everything he says with a pinch of salt. If I was Raonic, I wouldn't want to spend the next 24 hours thinking I might get a walkover in the next round, and then find out he won't.

Of course, I will apologise for thinking badly of him if he is truly badly injured, and his career is in tatters. (wishful thinking) no I won't

I hope spectators are allowed back after the 5 days- but I suppose it depends whether it is actually only going to be 5 days.

ScienceSensibility · 12/02/2021 22:33

Fakeovic.

Loves the mind games of playing at injury. Remember in the early days he used to be nicknamed ‘SickNote’ and Andy Roddick called him out on it.

Seeing him roar at the end like a demented bear in the empty stadium made me feel physically sick. And then the self serving interview on Eurosport afterwards, quick to stress that it was the “ATP physio” who gave him the muscle tear diagnosis.
Bullshit. Only a scan could deliver such a firm diagnosis.

He will be jumping around like a spring chicken in his next match, having spun the narrative for a few days first.
He really is trying to get people to love him by hook or by crook, and thinks the ‘injured soldier still triumphs’ will do it.

Nope.

In other news, I thought the Thiem/Nick match was magnificent. Great tennis and good attitude.

As a Brit, I have no right to comment on another country’s (effective) pandemic rules, but given that group of people were already gathered in one place, couldn’t 2am be granted instead of having them troop out while play was ongoing?
Definitely served Djokovic, that decision.

Some great WTA matches coming up in the bottom half of the draw.
