SCD '20 #6: Have no fear, Judge Anton's here!

I'm a bit worried we'll run out the other thread tonight, and it'll be too fast-paced for me to get a new one going during the show, so I'm getting prepared early!

Feel free to place mark or watch this thread, but head back to the previous thread for the moment, and we can move across later. Glitterball

Don't apologise for spelling, 80s, I'm always getting caught out by autocarrot.

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2020 14:12

I'm so glad I'm not a celeb having to go on any of these reality shows! 😃

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 14:19

@stillsomewhatsheldonesque

But they are probably waighs.

Pronounced ‘whys’ in a distressing wail.

LOL!

I have them!

My legs have always been like a chicken's - skinny, indeed scrawny, little calves, and massive, substantial thighs that make me look as though I am wearing WWII German Army Officer standard issue jodhpurs, even when I'm in leggings.

Cavemum - I don't think that is the video* (unless I'm misremembering) - but it was lovely, thank you. And shows how sexy any bloke can be when he dances like that.

It made me almost tear-up, it was beautiful. That slow waltz was superb, too. Everything about these dances is so emotionally moving - they're just beautiful.

*In my mind's eye the man was wearing a white shirt - no tie, obviously - and I'm pretty sure it was a tango. However, my memory is so bad nowadays that he could have been dressed like Eric Morecambe in "That Riviera Touch" and waving maracas, and I could have misremembered it.

SequinsandStiIettos · 15/11/2020 14:27

With regard to the Anton racism furore - it was cited at the time that Laila used the P word to refer to herself but as she was going through a custody battle at the time and the father was Pakistani and the fact that her parents would be disappointed in her using it, that the official line was that only Anton used the slur. He apologised (whereas Carol Thatcher didn't and was sacked. iirc it was the same time and she used the term gollywog). Laila denied using the P word herself although the Times article (no longer available sadly or I would link) claimed she did and Anton took all the blame to shield her from her parents. In Craig RH's book ''Tales from the dance floor'', he said: "it was one of those things where she might have called herself various names, like I might call myself a "big old poof" or "rancid queen" - or rap stars and singers like Rhianna use the n word - but if anyone else says it then it's not acceptable".
He also points out that Anton had a Japanese girlfriend at the time (although that does strike me as being like a "one of my best friends is black so I can't be racist" argument).
But he did make a full apology. It relates to his actual dancing/judging as much as James's perceived "fattism" related to his. Please note that I am not defending his use of the word - even if it was said in private between two people in the Star Bar - and that even if she did refer to herself like that which Craig implied in print in his book, that does not excuse Anton using it but I still think there was more to that story than meets the eye.
He has judged before on CIN special. He was interviewed along with Karen and Brendan I think and given previous accusations of sexism wrt Arlene being let go and a 3 man panel etc if replacing a woman with a man, I think they just went in a different direction because of that.
All those missing Len - he is not judging DWTS atm - but his judging the last few seasons has been rubbish and he no longer calls them out as much on props and faffing (because that makes up most of the show). His replacement Derek is good though.
Bruno is always standing up to watch what is going on and, when not playing a parody of himself, is usually the most consistent in marks which is a surprise given the persona but he knows more than he lets on.

Schaden if you can remember roughly what you commented, you might be able to find it using Advanced Search. You can use key words, the username you used when you posted, dates, and Telly Addicts as the topic to narrow it down quite a lot.

this week in Artem

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 14:49

Oh - thanks Moonbeams - I might have a go (though bearing in mind I can't even remember whether I have had my lunch most days unless there're drips down my jumper, it could be a long search!)

Thanks, though - I'll give it a go. Grin

covetingthepreciousthings · 15/11/2020 15:05

Anyone else sometimes forget that outsiders choreograph some of the dances? Just doing some twitter browsing and didn't realise that the Simpsons & Hercules routines last week were put together by outside choreographers, as well as Oti & Bills hip hop dance this week.

Here's a side by side comparison -

twitter.com/tommyfranzen/status/1327925905390522368?s=21

I know it's been mentioned before they get outsiders to help choreograph couples choice, Argentine tango & Charleston, but sometimes I forget and always think how great the pro's choreography is..

Re CQ - I wonder if she is very very anxious, and trying to hide it? When the camera catches her unawares she often looks quite strained and she has an odd facial expression when she's listening to the judges comments. Didn't she say on the very first show that she suffers from stage fright? The slightly affected way she talks could be a front. And if she is very anxious she might be difficult to work with, hence Johannes being a bit quieter than last year? Just a thought.

I think you may well be right
ElspethFlashman · 15/11/2020 15:44

Yes, "strained" is an apt word for her. She looks very anxious.

Which is possibly what is putting us off. You want someone to look as joyous as Jamie, not like being in Strictly is stretching their nerves to their limit.

JJ is worse for me though. He strikes me as one who would just mainly feel relief when it's over.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 15/11/2020 15:51

Sorry I’m late to the party, catching up on Sunday morning in the US. Haven’t RTFT, but who’s the amazing singer who sang “ Baby Face” for Clara and Alijaz? I’ve always loved her voice - the others are great too, but she always makes a song for me.

Just did a quick Google and nothing yet. I think it’s a bit unfair that the singers don’t get more attention- although perhaps they don’t want it.

Loved this week’s dances, I think JJ and Max might be in the dance-off though.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 15/11/2020 16:08

I think it’s a bit unfair that the singers don’t get more attention- although perhaps they don’t want it.

Hang on, didn’t they used to introduce the singers on the show at the same time as Dave Arch? “Vance/Vince (or similar), Andrea, Tommy.... etc. I’m sure they did- and so they bloody well should. What happened ?..

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2020 16:17

I like the singers too.

Maireas · 15/11/2020 16:19

Yes, the singers and the musicians. All live, a variety of tempos and styles. They do a grand job. I thought I saw Tommy on last night's show.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 15/11/2020 16:19

I’m currently reliant on the Strictly YouTube channel and they only show the dances on there in clips. I just love her voice!

JemimaTab · 15/11/2020 16:22

I’m also getting the impression that Caroline isn’t really enjoying the experience. And wardrobe are dressing her like an old lady, which doesn’t help. But Johannesburg is very popular and that could be what keeps her in.
I felt the same about Nicola - she really didn’t seem to be enjoying it much, to me.
I think the audience definitely responds better to someone who looks like they’re having fun. Which e.g. Jamie and Bill do.
With Maisie, I think it’s the stage schooly edge that some people find offputting. (Though she’s nowhere near as bad as Karim last year with his incessant camera hogging). I don’t mind her, but her dancing leaves me cold so far - not sure why.

JemimaTab · 15/11/2020 16:25

Johannesburg?? Sorry, I meant Johannes. (Autocarrot failure).

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2020 16:27

It must be so hard to teach a novice a routine in hardly any time at all. It is one of the more punishing reality shows and dancing is not easy.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 15/11/2020 16:31

I agree, Caroline looks miserable underneath the professional smile and she’s probably bringing Johannes down as well. Perhaps there’s tears and drama during training.

Jamie and Karen’s costumes this week recalled Anton’s OTT outfits for Latin numbers ( when his partners couldn’t really dance🤣). J & K were having so much fun though, it was great!

awaynboilyurheid · 15/11/2020 16:35

cavemum thank you for that link that link to that beautiful waltz it was fantastic!

Maireas · 15/11/2020 16:36

I agree with what's just been said - it's more enjoyable when the celebs seem to be having fun. Jamie and Clara were just full of joy last night. It's so appealing. JJ is doing incredibly well, and last night's dance was very moving. But I do agree it's a big challenge for him, so kudos to him for doing so well.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 15/11/2020 16:38

her dancing leaves me cold so far - not sure why. She is one in a long line of people that have been technically very good but just don't give me the "feels". I can't really explain it as it's not just being good, or even just being a ringha as there have been plenty of campanologists that did give me the feels but I found that when I think back over a show their dances don't excite me or stay in my memory. They seem a bit sterile.

JamminDoughnuts · 15/11/2020 17:00

CQ needs a faster dance, a bit of cha cha cha, to put the joy back to her dance.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 15/11/2020 17:09

She really, really does.
