The ‘head judge’ thing isn’t relevant this season - they need it when there’s 4 judges as a way of determining who goes through if there’s a tie, but this year as there’s 3 judges there won’t be a tie. If Craig and Motsi agree with each other Shirley’s vote is irrelevant.

Without sounding like a total bitch Caroline actually hasnt even done that much has she. Men Behaving Badly about 25 years ago and a couple of things but shes not had the most successful career. Sorry that sounds so mean but she clearly thinks a lot of herself and I'm not sure why. Ok meaow. I will stop now!

Jonathan Creek? Von Trapped? Life Begins? Blue Murder? Dickensian? To say nothing of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Yes, you do sound very catty.

cordelia16 · 09/11/2020 10:41

I want Caroline to go next. Have never liked her/her dancing, but that's not why. Anyone who can make lovely, bubbly Johannes look that sad is doing something wrong.

On the night, I thought Nicola did better than Jason. But in the dance off, I think Jason was the more improved. The judges are meant to judge based on that performance (or so Tess tells us), but as always they judged using their own agenda.

Jason & Luba weren't my faves (and I'm American!), but in the dance off they should have been saved.

Ranvir & Gio are my favourite couple. Really love their partnership, and she seems so lovely and down-to-earth. And Gio genuinely seems impressed and proud of her.

iklboogeymum · 09/11/2020 11:14

@FuzzyPuffling - yep. DH & sing it every time they're announced.

Yep I know I did! Ah ok fair enough didn't know about any of that.

Finally managing to catch up, wasn’t surprised to see Nicola in the dance off. She’s just not that good and agree with others who said the side by side dancing does her no favours. It was a pretty disappointing show on Saturday, terrible themes and music which totally ruined it. Caroline could have been gloriously OTT but was too restrained. Shame as her CC clearly had a connection to her, unlike Max’s Grin

CounsellorTroi · 09/11/2020 11:55

If having a comedian on SCD is to be a regular thing I’d love Rhod Gilbert to do it. I’m sure he’d be up for it - he has a programme on BBC Wales called RG’s Work Experience in which he tries out all manner of different jobs.

iklboogeymum · 09/11/2020 11:56

I'm sure Max's dance was technical and all but it just looked like a pair of toddlers or two try hard teens at the end of term talent show for me, I'm afraid. I'm not a fan of Couples Choice in general at all really. It must be hard to mark. I'd rather they chose from a 'bank' of proscribed dances with accompanying chosen music or something.

iklboogeymum · 09/11/2020 11:58

@CounsellorTroi - we've watched that. Brilliant mix of funny & music. Seeing him doing the Scouts one made DS want to join Grin

I'd be very interested in watching Rhod Gilbert shaking his groove thang on SCD.

Veeeeeeeerrrrrrrry interested indeed ... Blush

Theromanempire · 09/11/2020 12:20

Oh God, me too....every single time Grin

I agree about Dianne, her face looks really thin at the moment and the bright red hair seems to accentuate it Confused

Theromanempire · 09/11/2020 12:23

My comment was about 'Jack and Diane' - I thought I had quoted the original post but obviously not Blush

Blobby10 · 09/11/2020 12:43

Hello! New here - I've managed to watch all the shows so far this series but find that I really miss the original format where for the first 4 weeks, they alternated either a ballroom or latin and all started with the more straightforward dances such as waltz and cha-cha. I know I've missed a few series (got fed up with the guaranteed winners from the start) but since when is it far that a total novice has to cope with a paso in week 1 or 2? That used to be considered a really difficult dance.

KurriKawari · 09/11/2020 13:02

That used to be considered a really difficult dance.

That's why they add silly gimmicks and themes to them, and it turns into a hot mess.

Can you imagine the production meeting in which they came up with the ideas for Saturdays show and thought they were good ideas?

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 09/11/2020 13:11

I liked it when all couples did one of two dances that week, one half of them ballroom and one half Latin. It made it easier to see who was good and who wasn't. It always used to start with waltz and cha cha cha, didn't it?

Judging has been hit and miss so far this year but at least the worst dancers are being voted off, rather than rubbish comedy turns being kept on at the expense of talented dancers. That said, if Nicola stays in much longer it'll be back to the usual situation. Jason's initial dance was not good but he took on the criticisms and acted on all of them. It was only because Nicola started off with a dance that had more technical merit that she was kept on. Her music was also appropriate rhythmically.

Jason and Luba would have been better off with the Imperial March and Jason as a cloak-swishing baddie.

Aljaz should have pushed for Roxanne from Moulin Rouge for Clara too, instead of Lady Marmalade.

KurriKawari · 09/11/2020 13:24

My geeky side likes looking at number of views on youtube via it's usually a good indicator of how people are doing, although those with huge social media following will always get more views which doesn't ways equate to more votes. From this Saturday's show:

Max 209k
Harvey 116k
Maisie 103k
Bill 110k
Jamie 91k
Ranvir 78k
Clara 43k
Nicola 49k
Caroline 33k
Jason 30k
JJ 29k

Theromanempire · 09/11/2020 13:27

kurri that is interesting - Max's dance may have been divisive (I actually quite liked it Blush) but obviously very popular! Probably people who heard about it and had to see it for themselves Grin

mogloveseggs · 09/11/2020 13:31

Roxanne has been done a lot hasn't it. Brilliant tango song though.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/11/2020 13:32

Really interesting about the viewing stats. But Max’s routine WAS the most interesting even if a lot of people hated it - it did get people talking

I also wonder if there is something in it about a younger viewer base / Joe Sugg’s fans being really in to Diane and watching it for her

iklboogeymum · 09/11/2020 13:57

@TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain - totally agree. Choosing Rey & Finn was a miss even though they're from the more recent films. Two 'goodies' dancing together didn't work.

Definitely should have been Roxanne. Much more powerful piece of music but it has been done a few times (not that that's stopped them before).

GrouchyKiwi · 09/11/2020 14:26

Has anyone done a Charleston to Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend yet? I'd enjoy that.

ScienceSensibility · 09/11/2020 15:05

Shirley has zero class.

She was a terrible choice as Head Judge following LG. Either Darcey or Craig should have been given that role.

Craig is the only one who gives vaguely intelligent and relevant criticism. Motsi is a screaming ball of glitter and boobs who is unintelligible most of the time.

Shirley always offers some snark to the younger female celebrities whilst fawning, embarrassingly, over the younger men. I could see her propping up the bar in a back street Liverpool pub waiting for someone to buy her another port n lemon.

She was ghastly to Clara, but then at the end added “but you’re a beautiful girl, by the way” as some sort of supposedly soothing afterthought. Vile woman.

Yes I got the impression the director had said something in her earpiece along the lines of 'FFS say something nice!'

merryhouse · 09/11/2020 15:19

I thought Luba and Jason should have been Rey and Kylo which would have made Total Paso Sense (and could be really hot, though not with Jason, bless)

but S2 pointed out that Finn is the black character

Which is worse - giving the black dancer the black character even though it's a stupid character choice, or giving the black dancer a white character when there's a major black character in the same film?

Ach, it was never going to work. They should have done a quickstep instead.

merryhouse · 09/11/2020 15:23

And I totally agree about Shirley and the comments on looks. Was the dance circuit in the eighties as fixated on Beautiful People as I imagine it might have been?

Talking of looks... I can't help thinking that if Clara's lipstick had appeared on a drawn character there would have been eyebrows raised.
