So exciting, it's on Amazon Prime 28 October!!!

OP posts:
Screamingeels · 24/11/2020 16:17

Yes I think you are right, all of them have been through a lot.

I think all the seasons have been really good at pulling that out and none of their reactions seem false. Except perhaps Toby being a dick - that did seem to come out of nowhere.

BoysRule · 03/12/2020 18:25

Has this stopped? I've only got up to episode 4 on Amazon.

vjg13 · 03/12/2020 19:41

A PP says it won't be on until January now Xmas Sad

hangryeyes · 04/12/2020 09:43

It seems a strange time to have launched it, given all the interruptions of the election/Thanksgiving/Christmas.

SapatSea · 16/12/2020 12:47

It's so schmaltzy but weirdly addictive. I find the time lines a bit hard to keep in my head, the kids were born in 1980 and jack is meant to be 36 so by the time he dies 17 years later he'd be 53 but they have him looking about 40. Also with the Laurel and William story they have them dressed in late 60's/early 1970's fashion and music not 1980 clothing or hairstyles etc.

I loathe jack - he is a bully, a drunk and violent. He bullied Rebecca at the most traumatic point in her life to take a third baby home with no concern over whether it was right for his wife or the baby, because he was determined to leave the hospital with 3 healthy babies. His behaviour over Rebecca's singing gig and beating up her band member is beyond the pale. He really thinks he's King Dong and Lord of the grand gesture, because he died all the family eulogise him (Rebecca claims he was close to perfect). I also hate how the women all simper around the menz and their issues except for MIguel who seems like a really great guy.

Really disliked Toby (aren't you going to invite me in for a handie?- eww) but he seems to be calming down a bit. Randall is becoming a right pain, no thought for wonderful Beth and girls when he has yet another mad plan. I think Kevin is becoming the most interesting character. I like Madison, good regular addition.

Rebecca doesn't look old enough in presnt time. I know it must be difficult with the prosthetics when IIRC she is actually a couple of years younger than Kevin actor in RL. Also think I read she is pregnant at 41 with first child in RL.

At least it's not yet another cop/murder/detective show. Some episodes are really great. Find Jack and the"sour lemon" down home doctor hard to take.

VicMackey · 16/12/2020 19:51

@SapatSea
You have summed it up perfectly 😀
Beth is by far the best character and her and Randall’s daughters are adorable, especially the younger one, her scenes with William were some of the best of the whole series I think.
Do you find yourself fast forwarding when they have their ‘heart to heart meaningful monologues ‘ ?i did especially Kate ...still it is addictive as you say
Randall is getting a bit much but this series highlight was his unintentional striptease on camera - So funny😂

SapatSea · 19/12/2020 19:48

Yes, I do sometimes FF. I found a lot of the early Jack and Nicky and the Vietnam stuff really boring and pedestrian and FF through some of it (watched start and end of scenes). When older Nicky was told that Jack had died of a heart attack I wanted Nicky to tell Kevin that Jack had always had a heart condition - I don't think Rebecca or the family knew that.

I'm watching Brothers and Sisters (from 2006) to try to fill the This is Us gap, but it's more whimsical and I don't really like any of the family.

diddl · 20/12/2020 20:38

How old is Rebecca supposed to be "now"?

I thoght tha she was quite young when the kids were born?

Although wasn't it Jack's 30th?

I really like Miguel-so much nicer than Jack!

I suppose most of the "big 3s" problems stem from Jack's death-well, I think that the problems were there & his death brought them to the fore & they've been struggling ever since!

SapatSea · 20/12/2020 21:25

IIRC Jack was 28 when he meant Rebecca and she was seven years younger (so 21). I think Miguel once said that J&R were together a long time before they had children, I thought Jack was 36 when the children were born but perhaps 30 makes more sense diddl that would put Rebecca at 59 in Series 1 and 63 now - strange no one has mentoned early onset dementia, just Alzheimers. Even at 70 (if she had the kids at 29) she is still young for cognitive decline. They are all a bit upset but don't seem distraught or appalled that it's happening when Rebecca is still so young.

diddl · 20/12/2020 21:42

Actually, now you've put that-was Jack 36 & Rebecca 30?

But yes, if she's only supposed to be 70, it's still young!

No wonder Randall wanted her to be in a trial!

BenoneBeauty · 31/12/2020 00:04

Jack was definitely 36 when the kids were born as it started off with them all having their 36th birthday. No idea how old Rebecca is in comparison to Jack though.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/01/2021 22:53

Episode 5 done and dusted. has everyone caught up?

newyearisnewtome · 07/01/2021 08:05

All caught up!

I wasn't a fan of Kate's storyline this episode, very unrealistic i thought. Also a bit mean actually! I get she went through an awful time with Marc, but to wait 20 odd years and berate him at his place of work was a bit low for Kate.

I'm really excited to learn about what happened to Randall's mother.

Kevin reaching out to Randall was interesting. Im glad Randall cut him off as he has his own issues to deal with at the moment, Kevin can be a bit self absorbed at times. Madison isn't the love of his life so it will be interesting to see if he makes the ultimate sacrifice for her and the twins. Something tells me he won't but we will see.

I thought that about the Kate thing, not excusing his behaviour and she is right she was a vulnerable young person, he was in his 20s and not a child like he tried to make out.

However it's one of those where the best revenge is a life well lived and his life was clearly still shit so I think i would have left it at that.

I don't know all the decision about whether they would be travelling the world or not needed to be made then? surely its one of those cases where you suck it and see? Just concentrate on the now as the future issue might never have become an issue or could be dealt with at the time. He may never get work flying all over the world, or she might try it and enjoy it, or try it and not enjoy it but happy for him to go for a few months at a time and he might also be happy with that so why make it a big deal breaker now?

Pl242 · 08/01/2021 08:22

I’m not sure I get the Kate arc/storyline either. I didn’t have an issue with how she went about confronting him but I just have a real problem thinking that she let this dictate her whole life from what, 18-35? Wouldn’t this moment have come earlier for her? If she was that messed up she wouldn’t seem so together now? This will sound incredibly heartless to write and I don’t mean if that way, but I felt the “big reveal” was a bit anticlimactic. They’ve been building up the tension around Kate for so long and for it “only” to be an abortion didn’t feel right to me. I was expecting much worse somehow. Hope that makes sense and I don’t just sound like an awful person!

Kevin remains all about Kevin bless him. His total self absorption is however done without malice I feel. Those twins are so coming early, whilst he’s in Vancouver, aren’t they?

Despite the immense amount of contrivance I’m still completely aboard the Randall story train and can’t wait to find out about his Mom.

But where is Rebecca?! Still in the cabin?? Why don’t they ever mention their ill mother?!

newyearisnewtome · 08/01/2021 09:39

@Pl242

I think it might be because Mandy Moore is pregnant so they're avoid filming with her or perhaps she is on maternity leave already

Pl242 · 08/01/2021 18:03

Oh good point @newyearisnewtome. But even so you’d think they’d speak about her more in episodes. Think next week’s episode will be great. Am looking forward to it. Mid week treat to mark half way through another week of homeschooling Shock

Aztectrousers · 09/01/2021 09:49

Randall gets on my nerves. It will be interesting to see you the story about his mother develops but he’ll probably just be miserable whatever happens.
I love Kevin. Think I’m just blinded by his good looks though. I think things could work out initially between him and Madison but she seems reluctant to give it a go. She knows it probably won’t work (he’s only with her for the babies) so is trying to prevent herself from being hurt. I think she loves him though.

HappydaysArehere · 12/01/2021 10:00

Having read this thread I suggested we give This Is Us a go. Well we located series one and thereby began an addiction. At every opportunity we fill in hours of episodes. I thought dh wouldn’t be bothered by it but no he is well into it. We have reached series 5 episode 3 and it’s bang up to date, masks, hand sanitiser, the lot. Love the characters, Is poor Kate really that fat? How good looking is Kevin?
How complex is Randal? How perfect, yet flawed are the parents? etc etc etc

HappydaysArehere · 12/01/2021 10:03

@Sweetchillijam

Its Netflix rather than Amazon.
It is definitely Amazon.
HappydaysArehere · 13/01/2021 10:37

Been watching all the series but got a shock when there were no more episodes after series 5, episode 5. Then remembered they were being released weekly. Is this on a Wednesday?

showmethereceipts · 13/01/2021 21:25

What an episode! Susan Kelechi Watson is such a great actress, she shone in this episode. Even though it was centred on Randall.

I'm not convinced by the mother's storyline, but I am so happy that Randall has closure and a full understanding of his birth family history.

Pl242 · 20/01/2021 15:10

I just tried to watch the next episode but it appears that production delays means we have to wait another two weeks! Apparently there was a preview broadcast in the states following last week’s episode suggesting Kevin is in a serious car crash when trying to get back to LA for the birth of the twins. Anyone else thinking Madison might not survive labour?

PamsterWheel · 20/01/2021 20:52

Bugger, I was just getting ready to watch this week's episode.

I think the twins will survive but be in NICU and Kevin will be badly hurt as well.

BentBastard · 21/01/2021 13:04

Well we've seen Kevin at a flash forward had his mother's bedside so we knows he's fine in the end so not much of a cliffhanger about him.
