I thought she looked a lot thinner in the face.

But perhaps that's because she was actually somebody different!

iklboo · 21/09/2020 21:25

I'm wondering about Mary. The bulk of the witch trials were in the reign of Elizabeth I and James VII but we know the oldest parts of the current Button House date to the Tudor period. And Humphrey is Tudor (in real life Button House belonged to the family of Walter Raleigh). So was Mary burnt or Humphrey beheaded first and where in the grounds did it happen?

Remember Robin is the oldest ghost - an Early Man. Maybe him & Mary are somehow tied to the grounds, rather than the house.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/09/2020 21:27

The Black Death ghosts are earlier than the house too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/09/2020 21:33

@BruceAndNosh and @DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes thank you for not spoiling

More fun to discuss each week and have something to look forward to

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 21/09/2020 21:33

Robin does say in S1 that he has seen many houses come and go on the sight.

Very few witches were burnt in England. Heretics were burnt.

AccioWine · 21/09/2020 21:33

Excellent first episode. I'm going to have to sit in my hands not to watch the whole series!
I can't wait for the bloopers.....!

CountFosco · 21/09/2020 21:35

I think Mary was burnt after parts of the current house were built.

LIZS · 21/09/2020 21:35

There could have been older buildings on the same site.

Like a PP we loved the fanny jokes. Clearly I also have the humour of a teen boy Grin
And we couldn't stop laughing at "ill just stay here and watch this... wall". I'm not even sure why that was so funny Grin

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 21/09/2020 21:38

@CountFosco

Yes - most witch trials were Stuart and the house is Tudor.
chrislilleyswig · 21/09/2020 21:44

It's too late to watch another episode but I won't post spoilers

I thought it was very funny. But it looked different

I don't know enough about technicalities but was that down to it being a different filming method ?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/09/2020 21:45

We need the Captain's death too.

I'm not watching ahead, but I did have a quick peek at iplayer, and one is called "The Thomas Thorne Affair". Grin

BruceAndNosh · 21/09/2020 21:47

The actress who plays Lady Fanny must have a stiff face by the end of each day, contorting herself to create her "chinless" appearance. I was amazed at how much younger and prettier she is in real life-and she has a proper chin!

AccioWine · 21/09/2020 21:54

No spoilers, I think, but they were talking about this on the BFI Q&A and we do hear a bit more of Thomas' back story. Which makes me happy as I have a huge crush on Mathew Baynton!!
WinterfellsStarbucksConcession · 21/09/2020 21:57

Love this series! My favourite ghost is definitely Thomas, but I do have a bit of a Matthew Baynton crush so hardly surprising!
My favourite bit in series one was the episode where Alison first started seeing the ghosts but was in denial. The ghosts are waging gorilla war to get the couple out of the house, except Thomas who having fallen in love with Alison is hoping to convince her to become a ghost herself to be with him. When it's Thomas's turn to haunt her he begs a moment of conversation and she, thinking he's a figment of her imagination says, "You're in my head" to which he replies "And you in mine, my sweet. What are we doing! You're married, I'm dead. It could never work.'
Really made me chuckle!
I'm also fighting myself not to binge watch the series but I'm not sure I'll resist!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/09/2020 21:59

Loved it.

Agree there was something most odd about Mary. It didn’t look like her at all. Even the make up wasn’t the same.

Was it the same actress? It was distracting me.

WinterfellsStarbucksConcession · 21/09/2020 22:01

Has everybody notified that all the upstairs ghosts also play a plague pit ghost? Such a clever touch, I love spotting them.

icelolly99 · 21/09/2020 22:16

Loved it. Brilliant! I thought Katy Wix looked 'normal' not sure what others are seeing with her. We watched 3 episodes....I'll blame the kids for that. It doesn't disappoint Grin

WinterfellsStarbucksConcession · 21/09/2020 22:16

I too loved the dead doctor scene and the 'who you gonna call?' line, and those and the 'You're in my head' bit are all in Series 1 Episode 2 "Gorilla War", it's a classic! Cross post on the Matthew Baynton love Accio

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 21/09/2020 22:21

@icelolly99 I only had one moment when I thought Katy looked different. Wasn't sure if she'd had work done, lost weight or if they had had to do some post production jiggery-pokery because they couldn't reshoot due to lock down.

MissFitton · 21/09/2020 22:32

I may have watched the first three as well @icelolly99 despite thinking I'd watch one each week.

I thought Katy Wix's delivery has slightly fewer plurals in it which made her character sound different.

Very much enjoying it though!

LoganRoy · 21/09/2020 22:48

I too thought Katy Wix looked different, I wondered if it was just because I’ve recently watched Stath Lets Flats which she’s in, but interesting that others thought it too.

iklboo · 21/09/2020 22:51

Have any of you watched Yonderland? Same cast & very funny.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 21/09/2020 23:25

I love the way they’ve managed to translate the ensemble wit of Horrible Histories and Yonderland into Ghosts and how they’re involved in the production/writing side.

Martha Howe-Douglas (Lady Button/Fanny) co-wrote tonight’s episode. Episode 2 is written by Ben Howick (Pat) and Mathew Baynton (Thomas). So happy to have this multi-talented team back on screen.

threesenoughthanks · 21/09/2020 23:39

I am going to resist the urge to binge and watch it the old fashioned way of once a week Grin Mary was noticeably different. Especially her voice. It seemed higher pitched and the accent wasn't as strong. Oh well......still marvellous. We're looking forward to the next one
