For me, it's Pamela Rabe. So underrated but so immensely brilliant. Also think Jessica Lange is amazing.

David Jason.
John Hurt.
Jason Watkins.

Toby Jones brings something special to everything he’s ever been in - same for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Mark Rylance and John Malkovich were both electric when seen in live performances. Would watch Fiona Shaw, Kathy Burke and Tilda Swanson in pretty much anything.

Adam Driver managed to make his mark in Star Wars. That's impressive imo as I only go for the day out with the children and the bag of sweets.

EarringsandLipstick · 08/08/2020 17:11

Meryl Streep & Tom Hanks for me.

Especially in later years. They just inhabit their characters.

RonaldMcDonaldio · 08/08/2020 17:12

James McAvoy
Andrew Scott

Bipbopbee · 08/08/2020 17:14

Antony Hopkins
Morgan Freeman
Tom Hanks
Julia Roberts
Jodie Comer
Ian McKellen
Helen Mirren
Jack Nicholson
Will Smith
Jodie Foster
Susan Sarandon
Ralph Fiennes
Brad Pitt
Joaquin Phoenix was incredible in Joker

barbrahunter · 08/08/2020 17:15

Mark Rylance - sublime
Tom Wilkinson - underrated and couldn't give a bad performance if he tried
Margaret Rutherford - personality and charisma

Imelda Staunton

Heartbreaking in A Confession and mesmerising in Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads.

Stephen Graham in pretty much everything he does.

BobGalaxy · 08/08/2020 17:17

Stephen Graham
George McKay (1917)
Helen Behan (Elizabeth is missing)
Emile Hirsch (Into the wild- although he's an atrocious human as he attacked a woman at sundance)

Cattenberg · 08/08/2020 17:19

YY to Dame Maggie Smith, Viola Davis, Daniel Mays and Philip Seymour Hoffman. All exceptional.

Cattenberg · 08/08/2020 17:20

And Stanley Tucci is incredibly versatile.

PomBearSandwich · 08/08/2020 17:21

Adam Driver, fantastic in everything he’s in but Marriage Story in particular

Tatiana Maslany - played around 8-10 different characters in Orphan Black and you would genuinely forget that you were watching the same actress in all of the roles, she was that good. The show is worth watching for her performances alone.

WinniePig · 08/08/2020 17:21

Everyone who starred in Cracker: Robbie Coltrane, Christopher Ecclestone, John Simm, Samantha Morton, Robert Carlyle. Absolutely stellar cast.

YgritteSnow · 08/08/2020 17:21

Christian Bale - he may be an arse in RL, who really knows but he sure can act.

Viola Davis. Her performance as Abilene in The Help is the one I always think of whenever any one talks about good acting. She was perfect.

Zany15 · 08/08/2020 17:23

Another vote here for Dame Maggie Smith in Downton.

WinniePig · 08/08/2020 17:24

Oooh and Ben Mendelsohn and cast of Bloodline.

BGirlBouillabaisse · 08/08/2020 17:24

Like a PP, I came on to say Toby Jones.

I cannot take my eyes off him when he's on screen, it's not even presence/gravity/any other acting cliche, he's just magical. I watched Marvellous the other night and laughed and cried all the way through.

The Detectorists is one of the greatest TV series ever, totally brilliant.

Zany15 · 08/08/2020 17:24

And the insanely talented Meryl Streep.

YgritteSnow · 08/08/2020 17:25

@Peanutbutteryogurt

James Gandolofini for me. Not sure about actress, possibly Kate Winslet
I loved him. I'm listening to The Sopranos podcast at the minute, it's new and it's Michael Imperioli - Christopher, and Steve Schirripa - Bobby talking though all the episodes of The Sopranos. They tell some lovely stories about him. I've blubbed a few times 😔. Highly recommend the podcast.
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 08/08/2020 17:26

I don't think anyone has mentioned Juliet Stevenson yet, so I shall!

crosser62 · 08/08/2020 17:26

The actress who plays Villinelle in killing Eve, absolutely fantastic.

Worst was Samantha “Ronnie Mitchell” east ender actress. Saw her in a play, Girl on the train, and she was absolutely shockingly awful. She clearly couldn’t be arsed, didn’t want to be there, made zero effort to do any actual acting.
Waste of my hard earned cash that night.

Sheridan Smith. Love her in anything she does. Saw her live in Funny Girl and she was fantastic.

nicslackey · 08/08/2020 17:29

Lesley Sharpe and Maxine Peake
