For me, it's Pamela Rabe. So underrated but so immensely brilliant. Also think Jessica Lange is amazing.

Who do you think is the most talented actor/actress you've ever watched?

OP posts:

Regina King. Amazing in everything totally holds your attention in every scene. She's incredible in 7 seconds and in the underrated Southland. I also want to be Angela Bassett when I grow up she's fabulous!

wowfudge · 09/08/2020 08:14

She won a Bafta recently - Glenda Jackson.

evilharpy · 09/08/2020 08:25

Only one mention of Brad Pitt? I've always thought he was great and very versatile. He and Edward Norton together in Fight Club were fantastic. Big Edward Norton fan too.

River Phoenix was so good back in the day and had so much promise, so sad that he died so young.

Tom Hanks obviously.

I think Jamie Foxx is very talented. And multi talented.

SinkGirl · 09/08/2020 08:33

Most of mine have already been mentioned (Elisabeth Moss and Phillip Seymour Hoffman both deserve more love though). Has Ed Norton come up? He’s incredible.

I would add Emily Watson and Walton Goggins

I’m really surprised no one has mentioned Marion Cotillard - if you haven’t seen much with her in, go and watch La Vie En Rose immediately. Quite possibly the best film performance I’ve ever seen

Also, this sounds absolutely crazy but if anyone saw the Young Vic production of Yerma then you’d probably add Billie Piper to the list, with many critics calling it the best stage performance of the decade. I know, sounds implausible. If you have access to the National Theatre videos via a school, watch it.

ILoveYou3000 · 09/08/2020 08:39

Michael Fassbender without question.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/08/2020 08:44

Lesley Manville.
I loved all her sad, pathetic fragile roles in Mike Leigh films and then saw her in Phantom Thread as a completely self-possessed, controlling sociopath sister to Daniel Day-Lewis. What a collaboration!
“Mum” was great, too.

UncleHerbie · 09/08/2020 08:47

Kathy Burke in Mr Rowe's Virgins
Janet McTeer in Precious Bane

Both late nineties tv productions and both I'd love to see again

Nefelibata86 · 09/08/2020 08:49

Those that mention David Tennant; have you seen him as Crouch JR in Harry Potter? I find it so hammy and it’s put me off him ever since

Helspopje · 09/08/2020 08:49

Mark Rylance
Andrew Scott
Michael Sheen

KatherineJaneway · 09/08/2020 08:50

Cate Blanchet
Tom Hanks
Gillian Anderson

One that is very underrated is Sandra Bullock. She was superb in Crash.

jiffyjackfruit · 09/08/2020 08:50

David Tennant is incredibly good, watch him in What we did on our holidays for example. Tom Hollander is good too.

MintyCedric · 09/08/2020 08:51

I love Peter Sullivan - one of those really recognisable faces whose name I didn't know until recently but he's very compelling in everything I've seen him in

IdblowJonSnow · 09/08/2020 08:52

Leo di caprio and brad Pitt. I know both were very pretty back in the day but they can both really act and have a great range. Especially LDC.
Agree Claire Foy, especially in The Crown and as fab as Olivia Coleman is, didnt live up to CF's performance imo.

nitgel · 09/08/2020 08:53

Samantha Morton as I watched Morven Caller again last night.

cushioncovers · 09/08/2020 08:55

Daniel Day Lewis
Michael Sheen

Figgygal · 09/08/2020 08:55

Another for Leonardo dicaprio
I know it’s mainly fluff but once upon a time in America there are moments of absolute brilliance and emotion from him in that

One that stayed with me is Michael fassbender in 12 years a slave how he didn’t win an Oscar for that I still don’t know

stayathomer · 09/08/2020 09:00

Viola Davis, Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Frances McDormand, Zoe Saldana, Patrick Stewart, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino

curlyrebel · 09/08/2020 09:01

Has no one mentioned Nicole Kidman? She's fantastic in every role she plays whether it film or theatre. Also have to mention Penelope Cruz. Both better at acting than their ex Tom IMO Grin

IceCreamSummer20 · 09/08/2020 09:07

One that is very underrated is Sandra Bullock. She was superb in Crash. she is an amazing actress

Mumoftwo12345 · 09/08/2020 09:08

Helena Bonham Carter

juniperjennifer · 09/08/2020 09:13

Has anyone mentioned Eddie Marsan yet? He is the most wonderful actor but never seems to get the recognition he deserves.

blacktanwhite · 09/08/2020 09:33

It means I agree with your suggestions of John simm and Chris Eccleston @wowfudge Smile

wowfudge · 09/08/2020 09:36

Oh right - now I know.

Ihaveoflate · 09/08/2020 09:42

Juliette Stevenson in Truly, Madly, Deeply takes my breath away every single time. It also reduces me to a blubbering mess!

I haven't RTFT so apologies if she's already been mentioned.

Binterested · 09/08/2020 09:45

I don’t much care for acting generally. I saw the hot priest guy from Fleabag reciting a poem recently and I wanted to die of cringe. So much acting

The ones Iike are :

Russell Tovey

I was very struck by Pauline Collins when I saw her again after a long time off screen in Dickensian a few years ago.

Prunella Scales and Timothy West. Amazing on Audible.
