For me, it's Pamela Rabe. So underrated but so immensely brilliant. Also think Jessica Lange is amazing.

Ohhhh, Hugh Jackman

ThatsNotMyNameItsTooFluffy · 13/08/2020 15:40

Andrew Scott.
Not for the Moriarty/Priest roles either although both were excellent.
Sea Wall - a monologue - he takes it to another level. Someone also talked about elevating material - he did this in Black Mirror (Smithereens) and as I said on another thread, absolutely deserves his emmy nomination.

Some amazing actors on here, great thread op.

Deadringer · 13/08/2020 16:11

I would like to add Richard Dormer, who was amazing in Fortitude.

LouisaKelmen · 13/08/2020 16:13

I love Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, but there's plenty more.

SillyUnMurphy · 13/08/2020 17:03

I also think Jake Gyllenhaal is a very talented actor, given the right role. He was fantastic in Prisoners and I’m still not sure how he didn’t get an Oscar nomination for Nightcrawler.

Sarah Lancashire
Siobhan Finneran
David Tennant
Emma Chambers (RIP)
Philip Glenister

YettaTessieMarmelstein · 13/08/2020 22:18

Juliet Stephenson - for the crying scene in Truly, Madly, Deeply

namesnamesnamesnames · 13/08/2020 22:31

I watched how to get away with murder and Viola Davis was just brilliant.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/08/2020 22:35

Toby Jones

So versatile.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/08/2020 22:43

I know in the industry Daniel Day Lewis is known as being very hard work as he's so method. Which to me means he's not really acting if he goes into being a person 24:7. More respect for those who can switch it off and on when needed.

Olivia Colman is generally really good. And as lovely off screen as you'd think.

David Tennant always very believable, nuanced. Michael Sheen is fab. And both lovely too apparently.

For me it's about the fact I forget they're actors and they're utterly believable in that role. I can never see past Leonardo DiCaprio.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/08/2020 22:46

Stephen Graham. The virtues devastated me as he was so good.
Julie Walters
Maxine Peake

CommonCarder · 13/08/2020 22:48

Toby Jones is excellent.

thatone · 13/08/2020 22:49

Julianne Moore has been amazing in many films but I thought she was really impressive in Gloria Bell.

thatone · 13/08/2020 22:50

Imelda Staunton is also always very watchable.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/08/2020 22:57

Victoria Wood was underrated as a straight actress. Housewife, 40 was amazing.

[Mainly commenting to check some of these out and to remind myself to watch Galaxy Quest with the kids]

Someone mentioned Judy Davis upthread, she's amazing and so scene-stealingly watchable in everything I've seen her in. I just googled her because I've not seen her in anything in ages and apparently she's about to be in something on Netflix so got that to look forward to!

Mark Strong is great onstage and onscreen, I saw him play both male leads in Closer and he nailed both. And I loved his character in the Kingsman films.

And although I've never seen her in anything other than This Country, I think Daisy May Cooper is brilliant in it. Most actors in a part like that can't help being a bit tongue-in-cheek, like they can't help letting you know that they're playing it for laughs but she inhabits Kerry entirely. I hope she goes on to do some different stuff because I think if she can pull that off she could pull off any role really.

WerkHorse · 13/08/2020 23:43

Eddie Marsan is amazing in everything (EN RA HA!)

Sgtmajormummy · 14/08/2020 10:04

Eddie Marian having a meltdown in the same film is every tongue-tied awkward obsessed bloke we know.

Sgtmajormummy · 14/08/2020 10:04

Marsan

Ardsallagh · 14/08/2020 10:12

I wasn't aware of Eddie Marsan before Happy Go Lucky and I thought he was absolutely extraordinary in it.

BobGalaxy · 14/08/2020 15:12

I need to add Paul Mescal for the Normal People scene in the counsellor's office. Proper snot and tears and raw grief.

sobersides · 14/08/2020 18:43

Anna Maxwell Martin is really versatile. I loved her in Motherland but her performance in Poppy Shakespeare has always stuck with me.

My husband and I recently watched 'A room with a view'. He'd never seen it before. At the end I mentioned how brilliant Daniel Day Lewis was and he didn't know what I was talking about. He had no idea he'd been watching him.
