The secrets she keeps : SPOILER thread

As above, I've decided to start a spoiler thread as I binged watched it last night. For anyone who has already watched it !

Do not read if you are watching in real time !
.....

Spoilers ..

I thought it was a bit silly and I'm confused as to the graves for the other babies; did she kill those children? How did she get away with that? Was Nicky ( her ex) from the church?
The final episode was laughable : Meghan took about a minute to get to the museum to see Aggie , but the police seemed to take forever to get to them.

Where did she get her money from and you never saw them change a nappy either.
The acting wasn't too bad although how Aggie managed to talk her way out of things was ridiculous.
The places they went to also seemed curiously empty of other people as well!

I was a bit disappointed by it all but it did while away a rainy day. Maybe the book was better?
What do others think?

Sorry if I'm being dim but can someone please please explain the end scene? It was Megan sitting in the garden away from her family behind what looked like a load of rubbish? What was that all about?!?!

Furball · 12/07/2020 21:59

In the book Agatha goes to Meghans garden alot with snacks and drinks then leaves her rubbish behind - so I think it's that - with Meghan looking at her family how Agatha used to look at them

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/07/2020 22:06

I found Meghan's closing statement very sinister.

nokidshere · 12/07/2020 22:38

How did the police come to suspect Aggie - did they cotton on to the fact that she'd been questioned about the two earlier child abductions or did something else arouse their suspicion?

When she took the baby to the Dr he was suspicious because she didn't have the blue book with her and was nervous. I think he alerted the police after she ran off.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 12/07/2020 22:59

I enjoyed it, I sometimes think the problem with binge watching is you can get a bit bored before the end so the story doesn't seem as gripping

I watched it over the course of the week in 2 episode blocks and found myself thinking about it a lot in between watching it.
I did keep thinking, I wish I'd read the book.

NewCatMummy · 13/07/2020 15:06

Surely the stillborn baby Chloe would have had a death certificate and proper burial/cremation? If she was married and pregnant she’d have no reason to conceal the pregnancy or birth. The one that was adopted when she was a teenager was still alive? And one that she kidnapped that died. So did she kidnap another two as well?

Winniewonka · 14/07/2020 00:08

Just finished watching the series, I thought the three graves was a bit confusing too. She said she one baby taken from her at 16, so still alive, Megan asked Aggie "Why didn't you look for her?" and Aggie replied "She can only look for me".
Next baby was sadly a miscarriage but they wouldn't have been buried in the park and lastly she had abducted two babies but said she had tried to look after them but they had died.
Perhaps the flower wreaths were symbolic and there were only two babies' graves.

Despite the sometimes grim subject matter, I thought it was good with a lot of twists that I didn't see coming even at the end when Megan took the DNA sample from her little boy and swapped it with the baby's swab.

LadyEloise · 14/07/2020 07:33

Who sings the theme song ?
It's the Kylie Minogue song "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" but not sung by her.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/07/2020 07:47

I thought Aggie said something along the lines of 'I didn't just lose the baby, it was the one and two year olds as well'. Does anyone know what she was referring to, or did i mishear?
She was referring to the life she would have had with her child but mentioned Christmas and birthdays which, if she stayed a JW, she wouldn't have celebrated anyway. Even if she'd left she wouldn't have had any experience of these as part of childhood. Another slip up.

RHTawneyonabus · 14/07/2020 08:10

The policeman said they’d found the remains of three babies implying she’d stolen three and all had died because she hadn’t cared for them properly. That seemed ridiculously unlikely.

Nibblingoncrumpets · 14/07/2020 10:12

Had to watch this all in one night, fast forwarding through the bits where the baby was crying for its mother as I’m 6 days past my due date and could not BEAR the baby crying! The bit where he was reunited and immediately breastfed was like a warm hug for me. I was literally watching until 1am because I NEEDED TO KNOW IT WOULD BE OK!

Issues with it were:

As PP have said, the graves thing/locks of hair etc were all very confused. So she stole 2 children? They died?!

Hayden seemed very controlling and abusive but suddenly
Loved her at the end??

Meghan is just going to cuckold her husband and lie to Simon forever and that’s ok? Wtf? Yeh yeh she wants her family
To stay together but come
On. Awful and immoral.

I can’t really sympathise with Aggie. Her childhood was atrocious and I am
So sorry for her - but she’s a murderer and a child abductor and it’s awful. I certainly wouldn’t watch a sequel!

I also didn’t rate the acting.

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 11:35

I liked this and found it pretty gripping. Nice to see Laura C playing someone so far removed from Lady Edith.

On Aggie not killing herself, I agree that the police marksman would shot the gun out of her hand, hence the sling.

I didn't think H's brother was either a red herring or a 'nasty, spiteful little sh1t'; I thought they had a believable older/younger brother dynamic. And I think he was there simply to be one of the few people who sensed something off about Agatha.

I do have questions though: I'm also sure, like pps, that the stillborn baby Chloe would have had a death certificate and a proper burial. And her first baby was taken away for adoption and is still (we assume) alive, which Agatha knows. So who were the three babies whose remains they found?

And I'm confused about Agatha's ex. Why did he threaten her with speaking to her mum? And what about? She must have been terrified about whatever it was to push him in front of a train.

Winniewonka · 14/07/2020 12:21

It's definitely only TWO babies that were stolen. The detective said one from a pram and one through an open window whilst it was sleeping. He said they had found human remains not three bodies so it still doesn't explain the flower wreaths properly as per my previous post.
@ Intermittent Parps - Agatha's ex suspected her as he recognised her from the hospital CCTV and was calling her bluff when he said he would contact her mother to let her know Agatha was okay.

Nibblingoncrumpets · 14/07/2020 12:23

Also WHYYYYYY did she even call Hayden to involve him? It makes no sense. All it did was complicate her situation more? She didn’t even seem to know him
Very well.

I got
The feeling her mother was dead or something creepy too. Lots of references to her but never actually saw her and she was “in Bali” for a seemingly long time

Nibblingoncrumpets · 14/07/2020 12:24

Also if the babies were stolen, why were there quite long locks of hair from what must have been 2 children?

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 12:34

her mother… Lots of references to her but never actually saw her and she was “in Bali” for a seemingly long time

This has reminded me: why would Agatha run the risk of using her phone number to pretend to speak to the doctor? The mother would come home to a really weird voicemail.

He said they had found human remains not three bodies so it still doesn't explain the flower wreaths properly
I'm sure Meghan asks 'how many babies did they find?' and he says 'Three.'

Agatha's ex suspected her as he recognised her from the hospital CCTV and was calling her bluff when he said he would contact her mother to let her know Agatha was okay. I'm being dim, but I still don't get this. Why was he 'calling her bluff'? Why would it be such a threat to Agatha that he might call her mother?

Also, the last episode skims over how she was interviewed in the previous missing-baby cases and let go; they mention that her alibis 'checked out' –how would she have engineered this?

Nibblingoncrumpets · 14/07/2020 12:56

Yes! Unless she is dead!

Yes! Unless she is dead!

There didn't seem to be anyone living in, what I presumed to be, the family home in Kutoomba.
The80sweregreat · 14/07/2020 13:36

She seemed to wriggle out of the midwife question quite well : the policewoman asked her for the details of who helped her to give ' birth' !

OP posts:
IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 15:21

Nibbling and Captain, when A went to the house in Katoomba, I thought her mum had died and A was keeping the house on. Then people started saying her mum was off the grid in Bali on holiday, so I thought I'd misconstrued. But I do wonder now if her mum really was still alive, or not?
Although how could her ex threaten her with her mum if she was dead? OR did A have something to do with her death and that's what he meant?

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 16:31

Oh, and I've got another question, sorry Blush
When we're led to believe that she's losing the baby, when she's babysitting for her friend's son and she's bleeding, what is happening? I mean, I guess she gets her period, as she IS actually bleeding; but why is she crying? Is she upset about/unable to handle the fact that she's not really pregnant, because she's pretending to herself as well as others that she is?

Yes I think so. I think she's almost convinced herself she's really pregnant. I have no idea about whether her mother was dead or not but the house looked empty, not like she'd just gone on holiday, but abandoned.
IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 17:21

I agree. It was weird and not really explained, that whole mother thing.

MsLumley · 14/07/2020 17:58

I don't think the mother can be dead because Hayden said he spoke to her, after he found the postcard with her Bali number on it.

elenacampana · 14/07/2020 18:02

I always find shows like this disappointing. I think it’s because they’re outcome driven so it’s all about the plot moving on to get to the end and the reveal. I don’t find this kind of drama satisfying but I repeatedly go back for more!

I thought the ending was rushed and didn’t like the subtext about motherhood and breastfeeding by the lantern. You can’t like everything in a drama but I felt like it was saying non biological mothers can’t raise babies properly. Maybe I’m just sensitive for my own reasons atm but that irked me.

Great to see Lady Edith again!
