The secrets she keeps : SPOILER thread

As above, I've decided to start a spoiler thread as I binged watched it last night. For anyone who has already watched it !

Do not read if you are watching in real time !
.....

Spoilers ..

I thought it was a bit silly and I'm confused as to the graves for the other babies; did she kill those children? How did she get away with that? Was Nicky ( her ex) from the church?
The final episode was laughable : Meghan took about a minute to get to the museum to see Aggie , but the police seemed to take forever to get to them.

Where did she get her money from and you never saw them change a nappy either.
The acting wasn't too bad although how Aggie managed to talk her way out of things was ridiculous.
The places they went to also seemed curiously empty of other people as well!

I was a bit disappointed by it all but it did while away a rainy day. Maybe the book was better?
What do others think?

I though Laura was excellent as Aggie. Shocking that she stole a baby at 18 and let it die 😢😢😢

SeasonFinale · 09/07/2020 17:47

I am the opposite. Thought it started off promisingly and fizzled out.

The80sweregreat · 09/07/2020 18:25

It went on for too long. Too many shots of people not doing much when it could have been tighter and got on with the story.
I really thought the deaf brother might feature more as well.
They always have good babies in these type of dramas where they are lugging them around different places! You couldn't have used ds2 as a baby he would have screamed the place down in that shopper on wheels and given me away in hospital! Lol
The one playing Meghan was good though.

I’m watching episode 3 now and it’s upset me. They quite clearly show the church as JWs and there have been many child abuse issues, the meeting where they quizzed her about sexual positions etc spot on except there would not have been another woman allowed to be there! (I was raised as JW)

What upset me is two really simple mistakes - the cross on the wall and the talk of hell neither of which they believe in. I know it’s daft but they could really have been hard hitting there and ruined it with sloppiness around the basics.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/07/2020 19:05

Same here - it was a red herring.

They always have good babies in these type of dramas

I thought this was nice when baby Ben was born and he was covered in vernix - usually the newborn baby is clean and pink and at least three months old.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/07/2020 19:08

I’m watching episode 3 now and it’s upset me.

I found this very upsetting, too.

I don't know anything about the JW's, but I thought the sexual abuse of that poor child horrific, and compounded but the treatment she was subjected to afterwards. Dreadful - and hideously believable.

EdinaMonsoon · 09/07/2020 20:09

Perhaps they wanted to infer that they were JW (the Kingdom Hall kind of gave it away) but feared some form of legal action so mixed it up with factually incorrect details too?

I think the deaf brother’s role was to demonstrate that we listen to what is said far too often & not pay attention to the subtleties of body language. A deaf person probably makes more use of those other cues.

SeasonFinale · 09/07/2020 20:54

They didn't infer it was JW. Aggie told Meghan that her step father was a JW when they were walking back to Meghan's for coffee after yoga.

Tana433 · 09/07/2020 21:38

I binge watched it all today. I thought the acting was really good especially Laura Carmichael. The story was a bit of a let down though. It started really well but seemed to fizzle out at the end and was a real anti-climax. Still, it filled an otherwise boring afternoon so im not complaining too much!

Thesearmsofmine · 09/07/2020 22:36

I binge watched this too. I loved it although I wasn’t sure about the ending.

I think the deaf brothers instincts told him something was wrong, you know how some people just give you that odd feeling.

Interesting point - I hadn't thought of that.

I wondered how she managed to not die at the end too. She had a red target light on her, so guessing the police shot her in the shoulder at the last second to stop her doing it.

lazymum99 · 10/07/2020 09:17

Maybe the gun didn’t fire properly

The80sweregreat · 10/07/2020 11:13

I guess that as Aggie didn't die they could make a sequel. Although it would only be her stalking Meghan or blackmailing her over Ben's parentage I suppose.
I've started to watch Nest now which has a similar sinister feel to it!

I haven’t watched any of this yet but have read the book. What annoys me is that the book is set in London, but as I understand it the TV programme is set in Sydney. I hate it when they change things like settings for no real reason (I think it’s often down to whoever puts up the money, which I understand but it’s still annoying!)

alifeintheday · 10/07/2020 18:59

Yes I agree with you. I had mentioned this earlier on in the thread. The book was very London-centric, which I enjoyed. The location IS the story in many ways and I'm not really a fan when they deviate from the original source and change the location.

Maybe the gun didn’t fire properly
I thought it wasn't loaded.
LaBelleSauvage123 · 10/07/2020 23:05

I assumed the police marksman shot the gun out of her hand, which is why her arm was in a sling.

AppleYumYum · 11/07/2020 02:02

I got the impression that Hayden's family knew of Aggie from him dating her and that she was a bit troubled. The Dad seemed very unimpressed as soon as she walked in.

PinkDaydreams · 11/07/2020 14:20

I’ve just finished episode four. I’ve missed the part where we are shown 3 graves? I’ve seen where she was making what looked like a wreath and she put it down in the woods but I didn’t see three graves as pp have mentioned.
Also, when she was at Hayden’s parents house taking a nap, she rolled over onto the baby. Was that her dreaming?
This is based on a true story? it’s heart breaking

Furball · 11/07/2020 14:55

I think that is in the next episode @PinkDaydreams

Yes it was her dreaming - but in the book one of the babies did die in her bed overnight, but I'm not sure it's mentioned in the series

PinkDaydreams · 11/07/2020 21:00

@Furball thank you. Watching the final two episodes now.
It’s making me feel really uneasy the baby crying so much :(

Wemayhavemetbefore · 12/07/2020 12:55

At the end (don't read on for those who haven't finished, but this is the spoiler thread!) I thought Aggie said something along the lines of 'I didn't just lose the baby, it was the one and two year olds as well'. Does anyone know what she was referring to, or did i mishear?

How did the police come to suspect Aggie - did they cotton on to the fact that she'd been questioned about the two earlier child abductions or did something else arouse their suspicion?

RickOShay · 12/07/2020 13:32

@Wemayhavemetbefore
I think it’s because when you lose a baby, you lose your future and that baby’s future too. It takes everything away. I think that’s what Aggie meant.
