Goran lost to Sampras in the 94(?) finals as well. That was a much worse loss than 98 though. I think he was bagelled in the 3rd.

That wig!!

PrivateSpidey · 01/07/2020 14:42

Yes he just lost it didn't he - in 94 I mean - the first two sets were tiebreaks iirc.

Raahh · 01/07/2020 14:42

It didn't even try to be a good wig, did it?

The 2001 final was really one of favourites.

Spidey yes, it was really close- and then he fell apart.

I have just realised I have taken to alternating between Spidey and Private now.

This crowd is just amazing - they're loving it and it's only the first point Grin

Raahh · 01/07/2020 14:45

Pat Rafter was good looking bloke. Still is.

And Goran had definitely grown up a bit, by 2001. Grin.

Grin I'll answer to anything Raahh

Raahh · 01/07/2020 14:46

The atmosphere was great. I was really lucky- I had (as usual) taken time off work for Wimbledon- but at the time, I didn't work Mondays Grin, I worked Tues-Saturday, so I was still able to watch this.

Otherwise, I would have called in sick been gutted.

I think I’ve said this before but I had a dentist appointment in the middle of this match Hmm

I remember racing back home so I didn’t miss the end!

PrivateSpidey · 01/07/2020 14:50

Grin good work with the day off. I was on holiday at the time so that worked out well!

And yes, Pat's lovely isn't he.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2020 14:51

I like Pridey. It's very inclusive Grin

I couldn't stand Sampras.

Raahh · 01/07/2020 14:57

No, I couldn't stand Sampras. He was just dull.

The year after this, the Hewitt/Nalbandian final- I don't think I remember much about it. I was pg with Ds, and think I fell asleep Blush.

Raahh · 01/07/2020 15:00

(To be fair, as finals go, iirc, that was a very boring 3 set win to Hewitt, and wasn't very good).

Jack Nicholson Grin

Raahh · 01/07/2020 16:27

I did feel sorry for Pat, 2nd year running he was in a very hard fought match. But he waslovely in defeat. A lot of players could learn from him. I love him.

But I was thrilled for Goran. It was just a great end to the match, just really happy all around.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2020 16:28

The atmosphere was amazing. Poor Pat.

Fizzywinegum · 01/07/2020 16:31

Amazing! I’d forgotten how many double faults Goran served in the last few games!

Raahh · 01/07/2020 16:33

Fizzy maybe Sacha has been watching old Goran matches recently?

He needs to stop that.

Grin.

I felt nearly as emotional watching that rewind a I did at the time. I was so thrilled for Goran when he won.

PrivateSpidey · 01/07/2020 17:25

Same magi. There was almost too much emotion in that match, it was quite hard to handle!

So happy for Goran too, even now, to think that he is a Wimbledon champion Smile

It was a shame for Pat though. At least he had a couple of Slams under his belt already.

The other thing that stood out for me was how quickly they played, and how fast they both were around the court. JB on the commentary said he thought Goran was a bit slower than usual but I thought they were both so quick getting to the net etc. Ah it was just a joy to watch!!
