E4 have been showing it in the evenings and you can watch all the seasons online on their catch up.

Oh the nostalgia.

I forgot how much I shipped Xander and willow!
Also, it really makes me wish I had friendhips like buffy does.

Who did you guys ship?
Oh and Angel, Spike or Reilly for buffy?
I'm team spike lol.

I think drewcilla was my favourite character of all, think she is just a great female villain.

OP posts:
NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 05/07/2020 23:28

Dahlandchips season 4 is my absolute worst...I consider skipping it entirely sometimes but you do have Hush and Giles with a chainsaw so I tough it out for those moments!

LadyFlumpalot · 05/07/2020 23:29

I still reckon Spike and Willow should have been a thing. The episode where he kidnaps her in her college room but can't bite her because of the chip and is reassuring her that she IS DEFINITELY biteable...

My favourite episodes are OMWF (obvs) and The Gentlemen.

Season four was dire. Literally the only good episode was Dracula. "Master....bator".

LadyFlumpalot · 05/07/2020 23:30

Oh, are the Gentlemen in season four? It's been a long time since I've watched it all!

Nagsnovalballs · 05/07/2020 23:30

Ahhhh spike. I know we weren’t supposed to (be in) love (with) him but when it all got grown up and serious, I really appreciated his wit and snark and that made me fancy him like mad. I too try to pretend the bathroom scene never happened - although, interestingly, it was a female writer who came up with it based on her own behaviour st the end of a relationship, but the gender switch didn’t work. James Marsters is very thoughtful in his reflection on it, and says that the issue is we are all buffy as viewers, so even though she’s a superhero and can fight him off, in that moment she’s just a girl and we experience it (as normal people) in the same way, so it is far more dangerous and horrifying than it was intended to be by the writers. He hated filming it. Also, it is another eg of using assault to trigger a male character’s development, which is very anti-feminist compared to how great the rest of it could be.
Either way, still one the cleverest and most interesting series of its day and I love it deeply. Even the Angel spinoff is ok.

I am regularly lauding buffy in front of sometimes skeptical, sometimes appreciative undergraduates.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 05/07/2020 23:33

So, shockingly, I never watched Buffy at the time. I think maybe I thought was was too old for it. I’m not anymore...

I’m loving it but have to ask some Buffy experts - Xander seems to me to be so very Chandler Bing. Is that a thing that people acknowledge? It took me a couple of episodes to notice and after that I couldn’t not notice it. Everything he says and the way he says it. Same inflection, same self deprecation, everything.

I do think it’s quite funny there seem to be so many dead bodies and so few consequences. And Buffy’s mum must have noticed her boyfriend turned out to basically be an evil computer but just seemed to accept it and move on without giving it another thought.

Love it. Love it all.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 05/07/2020 23:39

I’m watching Buffy for the first time! I’m up to halfway through series 3. The episodes are also in Prime if you have it.

Also reading these blog posts along with it. She hasn’t finished recapping them all but I’m enjoying her insights into the series. (She also does an excellent 50 shades of grey recap too)

I found it on E-4 a couple of weeks back and have been watching a lot. Took me a little time to get into it again. Watched it as a teen though I'm not sure I saw all the series then.

Am part way though season 4 right now. Season 3 was good. Had forgotten about Faith and Wesley and Spike becomes quite funny.

Nagsnovalballs · 05/07/2020 23:49

@SingingBabooshkaBadly xander was supposed to be a version of joss whedon. Awkward and uses humour to cover it.

Buffy was my generation - came out when I was 14. I was obsessed! Episode guides, books, the lot...

Maria53 · 05/07/2020 23:52

My favourite show of all time. I researched every season when the pandemic first hit!

I have been watching the online comic con chats the cast have been doing during COVID to raise money for the NHS. Anthony S Head, James Marsters, Seth Green and Amber Benson are all just brilliant. Sadly Nicholas Brendon was on the last one and I had to leave after ten minutes - he seemed high and came across as belligerent, talking over everyone. He was in court for domestic abuse recently. Sad.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 08/07/2020 20:26

To answer an earlier question yes, The Gentlemen are in Hush, season 4. Probably the best episode of that season.

Yes Nicholas Brendon has had a dodgy history since Buffy. Doesn’t come across well these days. James Marsters seems lovely. I read an in depth article about doing that bathroom scene. He had to have therapy afterwards it affected him so much.

LadyFlumpalot · 09/07/2020 08:40

I've started rewatching them since this thread, and I alway used to think I hated season four, but I think it has such fantastic chemistry between the supporting roles that I can almost forgive Riley's existence.

Thank you for the clarification on Hush. Watched it last night and it is sheer genius.

My other favourites are "The Wish" and "Doppelgangland"

By the by, there is a series called The Passionate Nerd on YouTube which goes into some fantastic detail about the episodes and explains what the producers/writers were thinking.

LadyFlumpalot · 09/07/2020 08:47

A detail I find interesting about the bathroom scene is how long Buffys injuries last afterwards. When she is fighting Glory, or the Uber-Vamp or anything supernatural she can be stabbed, be thrown into rocks, be hit with some very big and heavy things and she heals quickly. She is strong, defiant, confident.

When Spike assaults her she ends up with a much more "realistic" level of injury, nothing compared to her usual ones, but it takes her a very long time to heal. A realistic time, as if she were a normal woman without the Slayer enhanced healing.

I wonder if there is thought there about the type of attack it is affecting her on a much deeper level than her run of the mill near death situation.

I'm saying lots of words but failing to explain what I mean properly. I hope it sort of makes sense!

Cluckycluck · 09/07/2020 08:50

@LadyFlumpalot

I absolutely adore TPN! He is so insightful and provides a whole different take on episodes I've never liked.

I've rewatched both Buffy and Angel countless times over the years. I think I'm in the minority because I actually prefer Angel. The series was darker and had some of the best character development in TV (Wesley and Cordelia).

Ellmau · 09/07/2020 21:20

Oz's werewolf costume was really ropy.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 09/07/2020 21:57

Ellmau so bad it’s comical! I remember reading in an interview that the first couple of seasons they had a really low budget. The costumes reflected that.

swimkiwipanda · 10/07/2020 09:04

I dreamed of Buffy last night!

Anyone notice HOW many times Giles gets knocked out 😂 Finding Xander quite hot this time!

swimkiwipanda · 10/07/2020 22:09

I feel slightly cheated by the episode where Cordelia wishes Buffy never came to Sunnydale, as none of them remember when it ends. The episode was good though.

BigBadVoodooHat · 11/07/2020 00:07

Riley is definately a big wet blanket.

Riley is one of the worst characters in any tv show ever. The entire Initiative storyline was turgid in the extreme.

Oz's werewolf costume was really ropy.

Basically just a furry onesie. And his ‘scampering’ 🤣🤣🤣

Queenoftheashes · 11/07/2020 00:14

Xander was such an entitled pig.
Oz on the other hand was the perfect man (apart from the appallingly out of character cheating shoehorned in for his departure)

Queenoftheashes · 11/07/2020 00:14

So I ship Oz and Willow

Redannie118 · 11/07/2020 00:24

I was so in love with Oz. And Giles. And Angel. And spike. And pretty much anyone apart from Xander. He NEVER got better. What was the point of him, other than fluff? For uch an amazing programme with such well rounded characters it just seemed like the writers couldnt be bothered with him. Im not suprised- he had all the charm and presence of a breeze block. Christ, even Dawn wasnt as bad as him.
Ive just got my 20 year old step daughter into it but i really want her to watch Angel alongside it like we did as i think they really compliment each other. Is it available to stream anywhere?

BigBadVoodooHat · 11/07/2020 00:28

I’m still in love with Giles 😍

whysotriggered · 11/07/2020 00:44

Also team Spike, the actor had a very good English accent. I used to love Angel but over the years, my allegiance shifted to Spike, he's just way more fun! Yep, I was sad to Oz go, Tara was sweet but they made her such a wet blanket and Riley was dull as dishwater. But basically up against tortured soulful sexy Vampires, human guys never stood a chance with Buffy. I enjoyed Cordy and Xander together too.

swimkiwipanda · 11/07/2020 00:46

Xander fan club here 😂 In the first two seasons he does save Buffy and the gang quite a few times. He is a seething mass of hormones and bad timing though.

I keep meaning to watch an interview with Giles, also in love with him.

I also want to find Angel.

BigBadVoodooHat · 11/07/2020 00:52

Also team Spike, the actor had a very good English accent.

100% Team Spike here too (awful series 6 stuff excepted). I was gobsmacked when I found out James Marsters wasn’t English! Shock

I didn’t mind Xander at all. But he was much better with Cordelia than with Anya - Anya was a pretty poor Cordy knock-off anyway (blunt, self-centred but in a demony way rather than a mean girl way).
