Baby Borg

He's deffo his father's son!!

JaneJeffer · 11/06/2020 22:54

I wonder if he plays as well as him. Must be difficult to follow in his footsteps.

The Wimbledon video is great. I love Tim these days!

Fizzywinegum · 12/06/2020 07:50

Son of Borg - no pressure there then Hmm

Love the Wimbledon video Grin

magimedi · 12/06/2020 08:14

Love the video - so clever.

kazzaD66 · 12/06/2020 08:55

Crikey! I don't envy Leo trying to make his way in tennis when his surname is Borg. Good luck to him, though.

magimedi · 12/06/2020 11:45

I hate to be the bringer of bad newss, but I think the likelihood of the US Open happening is not great:

www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/jun/11/us-open-at-risk-amid-player-discontent-and-stakeholder-division

Raahh · 12/06/2020 11:59

magi to be honest, I never expected it to happen. I think of all the places, New York is not somewhere I would be wanting to go in September. Fed is already ruled out, Rafa said he was unsure, I saw an article about Kyrgios yesterday, with him saying he needed to top names to come out and make a stand one way or another.

I'm not convinced there will be any tennis this year- even though RG has been re-scheduled. It just doesn't make sense. It is devastating for the players who play each week for peanuts and barely cover expenses, though.

I keep thinking about the Tour Finals- I can't see how they can go ahead, indoor events must be riskier from an infection point of view anyway. Plus, if there has been no play, then the 'top 8' might not be a true representation of who should be there. As it stands, it is pretty much the usual suspects- but Medvedev is outside it, for example- but Cristian Garin is number 6.

These are the things I think about, when walking the dog Grin.

PrivateSpidey · 12/06/2020 13:09

I can't see the US Open happening either... unless they go ahead without some/many of the players? I agree with what Rafa said though about it only being fair if everyone is able to travel and compete.

I agree Raahh it is tough for players who don't make much money week in week out Sad also they are not having qualifying either so that already excludes a lot of players anyway. I don't know what the answer is really, I would obviously love to see real live tennis again, but they aren't going to be able to run it as usual, surely. Sigh.

It was mentioned at the start of all this about having an American tour, European tour etc then coming together for the slams (like golf??) I wonder what happened to that idea? That seems a possible way forward to me. Not that it would solve the problem of this year's USO admittedly.

As for the WTFs... seems so unlikely as well, especially as you say Raahh, they'd be basing qualification on a few weeks' worth of results! Arghhh!

Raahh · 12/06/2020 13:39

Private I think there will be a push to try to get the WTFs played, purely because it is the last year it will held at the O2. But I'm not sure it will be a good idea- or fair.

JaneJeffer · 12/06/2020 13:48

Didn't Novak set up some kind of monetary fund to help the lower ranking players?

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 12/06/2020 15:42

I can’t see the US Open going ahead either Sad. Dan Evans was keen for it to go ahead more or less saying that it’s OK for Rafa and Novak as they don’t have the same financial struggles as some of the lower ranked players. It’s a tough one.

I think Djok proposed a plan where the higher ranked players contributed to a fund for lower ranked players but it was controversial as quite a lot of players would have been contributing the same amount eg no 10 in world contributing same as Roger or Rafa.

I can’t see the WTFs going ahead either and that would be sad as it would be last year at O2.

Raahh · 12/06/2020 16:30

I think people assume that all top players earn a lot. But the Big 3 are in a class of their own. Even out side the top 20, players will be earning a hell of lot less really, and paying out more - with injuries being such a big issue as well. I do think it varies from country to country, as to how players are funded though.

Evans a good example, really, - he is the current British number 1. Not sure he has a sponsor at present, and played his last tournaments in plain t-shirts. Some players probably end up earning less than the teams around them- the medics, the physios, the agents.

kazzaD66 · 12/06/2020 17:17

I saw an interview with Evans recently, where he spoke about Djok's comments about his problems with the latest US Open proposals about staying in airport hotels and only having one person travelling with him. Dan said something about the lines of - that's Djok's and a few others problem but not for the majority of players, who stay in those types of hotels normally and don't have a massive entourage travelling with them!

PrivateSpidey · 12/06/2020 18:25

Yes I agreed with Dan on that. I think some of the headlines were trying to make out he was being a bit arsey but I don't think he was at all.

I just accidentally clicked on an old tennis thread from last year's WTFs. It was so funny, but we were saying how there were too many matches too close together! (I think there were a few long matches and so hardly any gaps in between). If only we had that complaint now!!

The Mail tennis journalist tweeted earlier that Sue's daily Wimbledon programme got the go-ahead. Hopefully to include Boris (BB that is).

Fizzywinegum · 12/06/2020 18:52

I think Dan had a fair point as well - I think it’s his accent that makes him sound as if he’s always complaining Grin

Looking forward to the Wimbledon programme - hope we don’t get confused again with all the Borises Grin

PrivateSpidey · 12/06/2020 19:07

Yes especially if BB is on daily!! Grin Definitely potential for confusion!

It's freezing here. I've just put on a hoodie and fleecy PJs as I'm so cold Hmm

I might even put the heating on Shock

Fizzywinegum · 12/06/2020 19:32

We’ve had the heating on Spidey but had to turn it off because I’m now too hot Hmm. It looks like November outside!

I’ve got my Christmas socks on again (just to confuse matter even more! Grin)

kazzaD66 · 12/06/2020 20:01

Tbf fizzy I think it was only me that got confused with the Borises Blush

Not too cold here (comparatively) but had heavy showers. Massive thunder yesterday.

JaneJeffer · 12/06/2020 20:49

I went to the supermarket today and it put me in a right bad mood.

OP posts:
magimedi · 12/06/2020 21:47

Jane - I went to Tesco a couple of days ago & was in a right snit for the rest of the day.

DH* was making 'soothing' noises & it took all my restraint not to tell him to fuck off, as he hasn't been in a shop since February.

And I'm quite happy about that, more than happy for him not to go but I think it's very hard for anyone who has not been shopping since CV19 kicked off to realise what a fucking trial it is.

*DH is 10 year older than me so am keeping him away from any possible infection.

Fizzywinegum · 13/06/2020 07:59

I know what you mean about shopping Jane and magi and agree that anyone who hasn’t been in a shop for the last 12 weeks just doesn’t understand how stressful shopping is these days Sad

My DM complained that I hadn’t got her any yogurts in her shop this week (she hadn’t asked for any) and it made me irrationally angry! I don’t want her to go to the shops but wish she would appreciate how stressful it all is - anyway rant over!

I had a video chat with some friends last night - too much wine may have been consumed Blush. I need coffee!

Raahh · 13/06/2020 14:19

I have been to see my mum- we have been open mouthed at the crowds at the Belgrade tournament. All sitting next to each other , no masks, nothing.

Nice to see some tennis, but still Grin.

Raahh · 13/06/2020 14:29

Also, they have ball girls, line judges, umpires- all things that increase risk really. I thought that not having those things was what was being looked at, so tennis could go ahead?

Given dh can't resume training with his girls' football team, without a huge amount of social distancing in place, and a million rules, no parents watching, it all seems a bit odd.

But it has been put together by Djokovic- and we know his thoughts on the virus Wink

Raahh · 13/06/2020 14:52

Well, the Thiem/Dzumhur match has not started well- 2 points in, and Damir is injured already.

Nice beard though.
