I loved it. Really fascinating and interesting to see inside the traditions and customs of Hasidic Jews.
It sent me down a rabbit hole googling questions afterwards.
The men’s hats are incredible.

I just binged watched it today. I feel very sad and angry at similar cultures who do this to women. The worst part is that they can make you lose your faith along with rob bing you of your dreams, childhood, freedom. It all seems so absolutely ridiculous for outsiders looking in but the fear and control is very real.

Did you see how the male would high five the boys, the older girl knew not to even bother reach out but the little girl who didnt know better was left hanging. So many cultures favour boys and it permeats absolutely every layer of their lives.

madrose · 28/03/2020 18:11

love it. Thought it was well made, the how they made it was interesting too.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen into the life of a woman in this culture like this film portrays.
I am hoping there will be a season 2.

I loved esty’s character. She is wonderful.

Loved it

Just watched the first episode. I recognise the actress playing Esty from another Netflix series called Shtisel. There's two series, it's Israeli made and a family saga about Orthodox Jews living in modern day Jerusalem. It's a bit slow to start but I really enjoyed it.

ihatethecold · 01/04/2020 08:39

Thanks Winnie.
I will look for this other series.

I was hooked,it was amazing. Shame there were only 4 episodes, hoping for another season. I'd like to read the book it as based on.

AlpineSnow · 01/04/2020 12:12

It was fascinating. So frustrating that Esty was treated like it was totally her fault for not being able to have sex. Anyone would seize up if it were done like that! No attempt was made to advise him how he could improve and the way he gossiped to his mum all the time. Nightmare!

Macarena1990 · 01/04/2020 12:18

Yes and I really enjoyed it too.

Raffathebear · 01/04/2020 14:37

Watched the making of unorthodox and it was really interesting. Yes wish there was more.. i think they could ahve explored adapting to life post williamsburg and more on how living as a Hasidic Satmar woman is like.

ihatethecold · 01/04/2020 14:51

Is the making of it on Netflix Raffa?

AlpineSnow · 01/04/2020 16:28

Yes

ElaineMarieBenes · 01/04/2020 16:42

Brilliant - the director (Maria Schrader) was in Deutschland 83 (also good!)

ElaineMarieBenes · 01/04/2020 16:44

The making of Unorthodox was also interesting and I hope they make another series 🤞

JooLoo · 01/04/2020 20:57

One of the best series I’ve watched in a while. What other recommendations for Netflix that are as good as this was?!

ihatethecold · 02/04/2020 08:41

Unbelievable is very good JooLoo

Loved it; used to live at the bottom of Stamford Hill in London where there was a big population of Orthodox Jews and became very curious. It was so interesting being able to see inside a bit more.

Personally I want to know Moishe’s story, and think that would be a great second series.

Mentounasc · 03/04/2020 23:40

Is that the one partially et in Berlin? DH was watching it (we live here) and said that the portrayal of Berliners was incredibly inaccurate because they're far too polite for it to be realistic! Listening to Yiddish is fascinating if you can understand German, bits and pieces keep coming through.

jewel1968 · 03/04/2020 23:48

You will enjoy Shtisel too if you enjoyed Unorthodox. I had a job once that involved lots of engagement with orthodox Jewish community. I have been fascinated ever since.

RaspberryIce · 04/04/2020 00:29

I only studied German for two years but noticed bits of yiddish sounding like German. Ich weiB nicht it sounded like.
Do you mean Berliners are more polite than the ones in the series? I thought that too based on Germans I've met.

AnyFucker · 04/04/2020 00:38

.

buckeejit · 04/04/2020 21:22

Finished it last night & loved it. Characters were brilliant, I was torn & really good insight into another weird (to me) culture

beaverbill · 04/04/2020 21:26

I loved it. I’d already watched ‘One of Us’ which is a documentary on Netflix about people leaving the community. It’s brilliant. Try to watch it!

Helenshielding · 04/04/2020 21:28

I loved it, so sad but also bits were so positive. I want to read the book now, although the Berlin bita dont reflect what happened to the author irl.
