Actually, I know what was different- there were far fewer women's matches that were on 'last' . (So, the match we would have watched in the morning when we got up/around midday).

Almost all all of those were mens matches.

I think things would have been different had Serena lasted longer.

Raahh · 22/04/2020 20:53

(Of course , we were only shown certain matches )

Raahh · 22/04/2020 20:54

It didn't help that Roger milked so many of his matches to 5 sets Wink

Raahh · 22/04/2020 20:55

I'll stop now.

Is anyone watching Sewing Bee? They had a bit of a beard off but there was no one to match Benoit Grin

PrivateSpidey · 22/04/2020 21:48

Hmm v interesting Starks. I think the tours coming together would have to be good for the lower ranked players, and better for the viewing fans TV wise.

Also it makes no sense for it to be split in the way it is now. BJK said having a separate women's tour was always "Plan B". If it's good enough for her, I agree basically Grin

I see the naysayers (Kyrgios) are already moaning. Honestly. He complained on twitter nobody consulted him/other players. Someone commented "oh so now you're interested in tennis?" Grin

I agree with most of your list of women players Raahh, I like all of them too. I love Halep. Also Kerber and Azarenka.

Australian Open scheduling was awful this year for the northern hemisphere! I seemed to spend most of it watching Tennys Sandgren Hmm

PrivateSpidey · 22/04/2020 21:49

Fizzy I love Sewing Bee, but will have to watch this episode on iPlayer. So glad it's back!

Grin love it!

I put the sewing on for a minute to check the beardage and had flashbacks of school sewing lessons.

It’s all good, Jane, I know there are many, many people who enjoy the Women’s game. I only get irritated with them when they are first match of a night session and I am trying to stay awake for the subsequent Men’s match. 😀
Maria Sharapova seemed to always drag her matches out on purpose to annoy me!
I do like Ash Barty and Muguruza as well. Not a fan of what seemed to be an endless production line of East European women who stood stock still on the baseline. It was like watching paint dry.

JaneJeffer · 22/04/2020 22:36

The worst thing about the women's for me is the screeching for which I hold Sharapova fully responsible. There have been times when I've had to mute the tv. Luckily it seems to be going out of vogue. Fingers crossed.

Grin me neither.

Although I suppose you could call Kerber and Halep defensive sort of players, but both amazing athletes and that makes them good to watch.

Sigh. It'd be good to watch some tennis right now, wouldn't it?

PrivateSpidey · 22/04/2020 22:49

Speaking of women's tennis Smile

The Tennis Podcast did a really good feature about the 1986 Fed Cup final this week (love a bit of tennis history) which was Czechoslovakia v USA, in Prague.

Martina was in the USA team and it was the first time she had been back to Prague since she defected to the States 11 years earlier.

They interviewed Pam Shriver about the tie as she was on the team (plus Chris Evert and Zina Garrison, what a team), it was totally fascinating and quite emotional to hear her talking about it.

Fizzywinegum · 23/04/2020 07:10

I listened to that Spidey - it was really interesting. Martina was barely acknowledged by the Czech organisers but the public kept cheering her - it was pretty emotional.

It seemed as if Hannah Mandlikova was treated a lot differently because she’d not defected. Also Hannah managed to get married in the middle of the whole thing! It was like a different era (I guess it was really?)

Have you watched any of the matches that they’ve been talking about? I haven’t but wish that I had when they’re discussing them.

Fizzywinegum · 23/04/2020 07:19

Can’t believe that no one consulted Kyrgios about bringing men and women’s tennis together! Grin

Raahh · 23/04/2020 08:30

Morning!

I watched half of Sewing Bee, but was falling asleep, so will watch it properly later. Our internet is rubbish, dh has got a new hubthing and is going to fix it this afternoon, so I will watch it then, when i can't use the laptop!

Spidey very true that Melbourne seemed to be dominated by SandgrenGrin. And poor John Millman- if only he could have turned a couple of those points around!

So-another morning of trying to get my offspring to do some school work. I'm a rubbish teacher. I'm a rubbish anything, let's be honst. Grin.

Raahh · 23/04/2020 08:34

And Starks I forgot Muguruza in my list of players I like, she was doing really well at the beginning of the year after a bit of a slump.

magimedi · 23/04/2020 09:20

And I like Bethany Mattek Sands & Ons Jabeur.

I am so thankful I don't have to home school - I'd be crap at it. Don't beat yourself up about it, Raahh, very few parents will suceed at it & the main thing atm is to keep the kids happy & as level as you can.

Raahh · 23/04/2020 09:37

Magi I am not so bothered about dd2, (year 4)although she probably spends more time on the pc than she should. DD1 has a lot of work that is probably stuff she should really be doing (she is year 9)and although she started off well, she hasn't done a lot since. I do really feel sorry for the teachers. Her head of year is lovely, and sends messages every day- but there are about 6 kids in the school this week- out of a cohort of 1600!

Dh has a conference call at 10.30, so I need to get myself sorted and take the dog out. And hope it isn't a video call, as there is a whole load of washing behind where he is sitting Grin.

Raahh · 23/04/2020 12:00

DD2's teacher just called ! That was a shock Grin. He's really nice, and I was very honest about what has been happening here. He said it was similar everywhere else, and not to worry. Grin. They are more concerned with making sure the children are mentally coping, which ias it should be.

It was funny, as we had literally just been talking about him, as the phone rang.

magimedi · 23/04/2020 12:52

Do you think he is a Mumsnetter?? Grin

Raahh · 23/04/2020 13:12
Grin

That would be funny

Raahh Grin that was nice of the teacher to say that! I hope ours takes a similar view!

I agree it's just about making this as happy a time for them as possible, not easy though.

Hope everyone is ok. I've just been listening to the Tennis Podcast - sorry to mention them yet again! They had John Millman on - I think I love him Grin he's great.

I see everyone is weighing in on the tour merger thing - how does tennis manage to be so dramatic when they're not even playing?!! Confused Grin
