Just saw his Instagram story where he has come out as gay. Very well written letter. Hope he and his family are ok.

It’s obvious that he doesn’t get on with Ruth.
She is just a very nice woman who is supporting a colleague going through difficult time.
I feel so sorry for his wife, I really do

TippledPink · 07/02/2020 10:19

I always really liked him but really gone off him now. Wasting his wife's life, everyone clapping like he has done something amazing- seriously?!!

kenandbarbie · 07/02/2020 10:20

Yeah it's just cowRdly to leave it till now. He should have come out years ago so his wife could find someone else not waste time with him.

Jocasta2018 · 07/02/2020 10:21

Surely he's Bi rather than Gay if he's been married and had kids but has decided that out of the two sexes, finally he does prefer men? I wonder how long his wife & kids have known.

MsMiaWallace · 07/02/2020 10:21

Maybe they have an open marriage?

Ledkr · 07/02/2020 10:25

His poor wife. He should have been honest and let her make a life for herself which may have included a loving and honest relationship
Bit selfish I think.

Bluntness100 · 07/02/2020 10:27

I think if he was bi he'd have said so. Many people pretend to be straight when they are not, for many reasons. If the bloke says he's gay then I think instead of doubting it it's probably prudent to accept he's gay.

showmethegin · 07/02/2020 10:29

There's a really nasty undertone on this thread. NOONE knows anything about his marriage, or what his wife knew, or discussions they had. You don't even know the woman so assuming she is totally clueless and not able to make decisions for herself is so patronising.

If this story proves anything is that unfortunately, it can still be massively difficult to come out and I think that's the tragedy here. And as for people thinking it's some sort of timing thing, to counteract some of the nonsense in the press printed lately, really?!

CooCooCoo · 07/02/2020 10:30

I feel awful for his wife too. :( id feel so robbed

Yeah I'm sure she wanted to spend 30 years married to someone who fancied men not her.

TippledPink · 07/02/2020 10:32

I don't agree that this thread proves it is difficult for people to come out- no one cares that he is gay!! So many people are gay! People care if he wasted his wife's life for the past 27 years- it is very unlikely she knew he was gay for the whole 27 years and before they were married, why would you marry a guy knowing he was gay, knowing he was physically repulsed having sex with you and making children. It is very unlikely someone would choose that lie for themselves.

This ^^

Honestly, I don’t give a flying fig about his sexuality. If anything these grand announcements just make it harder for people to come out.

Wow. How unexpected. Or maybe joy thinking about it. But I am surprised considering he’s been married for 30 odd years.

Spidey66 · 07/02/2020 10:38

It surprised me but it doesn't surprise me. I know that sounds odd but I know what I mean!

Roussette · 07/02/2020 10:39

Some horrible posts on here.

Apparently his wife has known for a very long time, and he's been dating a runner for a long time. (Someone I know has insider knowledge, no idea how true it is!)

Why be so horrible? His wife has known a long time and could've left him. She hasn't. She chose to stay with him. Perhaps she loves him, despite the fact he's gay. Hard to understand for some on here obviously. He made choices, but she did too. She could've quietly got divorced from him years ago if she had wanted. She didn't.

Piglet208 · 07/02/2020 10:40

*Wonder what the press have on him that's prompted this sudden honesty?
*The other 'no one likes him' stories raised my suspicions as the press always thread 'no stories' stories thru their pages when they have something they can't publish.

^^ This makes absolute sense.

Yes she obviously did. She wasn't chained to him, she could've left. I feel sorry for her but everyone makes choices in life. Coming out as gay isn't something that happens overnight!

Ferrochrome · 07/02/2020 10:45

His poor wife.

Nothing against him but surely it is better to remain single if you are unsure of your sexuality or not ready to come out than to use someone knowingly to portray a straight image.

Ledkr · 07/02/2020 10:49

I also don't see it as brave to hide it for so long. The brave are the ones who are honest from the start.

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2020 10:50

No it's easy to understand that you can love some who is gay but being married to them is a whole different thing.

EmilyHowardsWife · 07/02/2020 10:52

I posted this on the Trans Widow thread:

Support to Philip Schofield's wife, she must feel a bit like us TWs.

The reporting is just the same,

Wife and children standing by their partner - tick.
How very brave he is for sharing that he is now not attracted to his wife but to men - tick.
Coming out after he has nothing to lose, career intact, wife of an age where it's virtually impossible to separate her life from his - tick.
Wife only mentioned as an emotional prop for his troubled emotions - tick.

I understand that it might have been difficult back in the 80s to be an openly gay man in the media and I sympathise with that.

But the wrong done by using a woman's life as a human shield to feather his closet is wrong.

Great respect to openly gay men, who live their lives with real courage, rather than being a coward as I feel some of these closeted men are.

Piglet208 · 07/02/2020 10:53

I hope that his wife has known for many years and made the decision to stay. It is not for us to judge her for choosing to keep her family together and it seems they do love each other very much. Once the media and public interest has reduced I hope they will be left to work things out in a way that is right for them and their family. If it was a threatened story it is a shame that it has forced a public announcement which may have upset a status quo that has worked for the Schofields.

I highly doubt she knew before they got married and had kids. He lied to her and she had invested her life in him. It wasn't a 'choice'.
