Do you still love 'The Thick of It' (BBC) as much as I do?!

I love watching The Thick of it over and over and over again! Does anyone else?!

My favourite character is Julius Nicholson closely followed by Glenn Cullen.
One of my favourite Julius scenes is when he is feeding the ducks with Steve Fleming. One of my favourite Glenn scenes is when he completely loses it (justifiably) with the coalition and says 'I will lamp you with a lamp'!
I just love this show so much, it never fails to make me laugh and picks me up when I'm down!

Just remembered that I loaned the series 1 DVD to a friend several years ago. She hated it, found the swearing too depressing and didnt even make it through episode 1. I honestly never saw her in quite the same way after that, and we're no longer friends, though obviously due to more complex stuff than differing views on The Thick of It!

sue51 · 01/01/2020 17:57

I loved this. The veep is worth a watch too.

neighbourhoodwitch · 01/01/2020 17:57

Yes - the best EVER!!!!!

actiongirl1978 · 01/01/2020 18:02

“There's more to life than having Nick Robinson's mobile number in your blackberry”.

It makes me laugh a lot!

CalamityJune · 01/01/2020 18:02

It's fantastic. One of the few things I can rewatch over and over again.

It does not help with my slight crush on Alastair Campbell Blush

Lottapianos · 01/01/2020 18:11

'It does not help with my slight crush on Alastair Campbell blush'

Very much ditto!

Lou0390 · 01/01/2020 18:13

I love it!
Malcom: "Terri when I want your advice I will give you that special sign, which is me getting sectioned under the mental health act".

Callistone · 01/01/2020 18:18

Spinners and Losers is the greatest single hour of come ever made. To get to the end and realise that Malcolm orchestrated the entire thing just to save his skin. Plus the guy from Horrible Histories as the Mail's night editor - "this isn't the Independent, we can't just print a picture of a dolphin with the headline 'Cruelty' underneath it!"

tinkertailorsoldiercunt · 01/01/2020 18:18

Now look what you made me do! I’ve gone to the lovely dark side!

I love watching Nicola doing her respectful walk

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 01/01/2020 18:23

I often say "I'm bored of this, I'm going for a Twix" but no one gets the reference

AnneElliott · 01/01/2020 18:54

I do find it funny although uncomfortable at times as I've unfortunately had to work with the SPAD that was meant to have inspired the writing of Malcolm.

We had a great party the night he was given his marching orders!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 01/01/2020 19:49

I'm commenting on a death, not a camel race!

Peter Mannion is my favourite. He looks so defeated all the time, and the way he's unnerved by Terri's crush on him never fails to be hilarious.

If you like The Thick of It, may I also recommend The Death of Stalin. It's written by Armando Iannucci and it struck me as reflecting what TTOI would have been like if Malcolm Tucker had actually been allowed to have people killed.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 01/01/2020 19:55

Ooh yes Eoin it’s now on Netflix Smile

Egghead68 · 01/01/2020 22:35

My favourite TV show of all time and my go-to comfort viewing. Julius Nicholson is my favourite character too.

I am delighted that a friend of mine has just started watching it for the first time and he loves it too.

Lottapianos · 01/01/2020 23:16

Totally agree about The Death of Stalin. Have seen it 3 times now and its utterly brilliant. The balance between laughs and really chilling horror is perfectly done. My only complaint is that theres not nearly enough Jason Isaacs! The whole cast are fantastic but hes a particular treat

Andylion · 02/01/2020 05:24

Malcolm: You are a pint pot Judas.
Jamie: I'm five foot ten.

Always cracks me up I.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 02/01/2020 05:35

Yes, it's fantastic. The writing is staggeringly good. It cracks me up.

Egghead68 · 02/01/2020 06:40

@AnneElliott I thought Malcolm was based on Alistair Campbell (with a bit of Peter Mandelson thrown in)?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 02/01/2020 08:03

Lottapianos yes, there should definitely be more Jason Isaacs, he was a complete scene-stealer. Seeing Marshal Zhukov marching around shouting at people in a Yorkshire accent did some very odd things to me!

I read that Malcolm was partly based on Harvey Weinstein, not sure if that's right.

NeverGuessWho · 02/01/2020 08:05

Love it!
Haven’t watched it for months but I think I’ll watch it tonight now that you’ve reminded me of it, OP!

Egghead68 · 02/01/2020 09:10

Eoin oh yes - this from Wikipedia:

Capaldi later revealed that his personal preferable inspiration for the character was notorious Hollywood producers, most notably Harvey Weinstein.

and this from the Guardian:

'Alistair Campbell was mentioned, but if you look at the first few episodes there's more of a Mandelson quality to him' - Peter Capaldi

Giggorata · 02/01/2020 10:13

I love the Thick of it, especially Malcom - what a creation.
Now looking forward to the new Armando Iannucci series, Avenue 5 😀

AnneElliott · 02/01/2020 10:25

I'm not totally sure Egghead. We understood he was partly based on NT. Probably an amalgam of all of them!

DarlingNikita · 02/01/2020 14:59

DH and I often tell each other to Come the fuck in or fuck the fuck off.
This is frequent in our house too Grin

I'm also very fond of 'I'm gonna take your bollocks, I'm gonna fucking rip them off, I'm gonna fucking paint eyeballs on them. And then stitch them onto a fucking sock and use that as a mouthpiece.'

Fucking love it. Peter Capaldi's performance is a tour de force.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 02/01/2020 18:10

One of my favourites is Malcolm after Nicola talks to the journalist at the Guardian offices.
“What the fuck did you think it was, a sanitorium for the fucking deaf?!” And then his rant in the car Grin

To be fair she did deserve that one a bit!
