Do you still love 'The Thick of It' (BBC) as much as I do?!

I love watching The Thick of it over and over and over again! Does anyone else?!

My favourite character is Julius Nicholson closely followed by Glenn Cullen.
One of my favourite Julius scenes is when he is feeding the ducks with Steve Fleming. One of my favourite Glenn scenes is when he completely loses it (justifiably) with the coalition and says 'I will lamp you with a lamp'!
I just love this show so much, it never fails to make me laugh and picks me up when I'm down!

Oh I do still love this programme. Agree that it would have been great to have around after Brexit but really satire has been writing itself for the last three and a half years.

Love all the quotes so far and my other favourites are:

  • She's so dense that light bends around her.
  • I AM BENT
  • LEGO. They're all made of fucking LEGO. Which occurs in the best explanation of star wars ever.
midsomermurderess · 02/01/2020 18:26

The one thing I feel uncomfortable with and which has aged badly is the casual homophobia, call someone gay of you want to insult them Otherwise, all still good.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 02/01/2020 19:01

When Malcolm punches Glenn at the conference hotel, and Nicola offers to make him "a cup of tiny tea" with the miniature kettle Grin

Rebecca Front was so perfect as a perfectly nice person who is utterly useless at being a politician. You get the impression that the House of Commons is chock full of such types.

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 02/01/2020 20:06

"The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin. His father's a robot and he's fucking fucked his sister. Lego. They're all made of fucking lego."

TooStressyTooMessy · 02/01/2020 20:27

Love, love, love it. We frequently rewatch it.

Dipsydoodle · 02/01/2020 20:44

'Feet off the furniture you Oxbridge twat. You're no on a punt now.'
God I'd forgotten how amazing it is. This thread has made me re-watch it.

HollowTalk · 02/01/2020 20:53

I think TTOI has been my favourite TV programme ever, though I agree with the PP and can't watch the early series with Hugh Abbott.

My favourite moment was right at the end when Malcolm realised he was going to be fired, and he just says, "Oh no..." and you hold your breath, knowing he's going to explode Grin

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 02/01/2020 20:54

Yes dipsy and the one where Olly’s just said hello, how are you etc to someone and Jamie goes “oh fuck off with your Oxbridge pleasantries” Grin

SproutMuncher · 02/01/2020 20:59

I love it too!

Surprised people don’t like Jamie! One of my favourite moments is when Ben gets into the taxi after that terrible interview and Jamie says “you don’t deserve to live”!

I think my favourite is Terri, characterisation is just so accurate and well observed.

Of course you couldn’t have this programme these days because politics is beyond satire!

TooStressyTooMessy · 02/01/2020 21:00

There is a The Thick of It Facebook page which is worth a look for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

ethelredonagoodday · 02/01/2020 21:05

I love it! Am going to put it on now!

chergar · 02/01/2020 21:38

Thanks to this thread I have started watching again from the beginning. It is one of few shows that can make me laugh out loud, I love Malcolm Tucker.
Some of the writing is so on point like "spare room database" and "how to get on tv - have sex with a pig?"
But this line was a bit uncomfortable on rewatching "Fuck knows what it means, but I don't think it means, "Oh, Hugh, you're fantastic. Here, become Home Secretary". And even if it did mean that, when he's in bed tonight with Mrs PM, flossing, then she'll say, "What do you mean, Hugh Abbot as Home Secretary? The man is a social spastic and very probably a registered nonce, darling."

Egghead68 · 02/01/2020 21:58

Watched the radio five live episode last night. One of my favourites.

Lottapianos · 02/01/2020 23:06

"What the fuck did you think it was, a sanitorium for the fucking deaf?!” And then his rant in the car'
Grin That was a vintage Malcolm moment

Malcolm's birthday cake that reads 'Happy Birthday C*nt' and his reaction- 'this could be from anybody!'. Glorious stuff

Egghead68 · 02/01/2020 23:37

We’ll have a fucking tete a tiny tete!

PrimalLass · 02/01/2020 23:40

We've just watched it again.

TinselTitsMcTree · 03/01/2020 00:05

I've found my people. I LOVE this programme. I wish they'd bring it back. Imagine the material they'd have to work with now.

The duck scene OP - yogi and boo boo!

TinselTitsMcTree · 03/01/2020 00:12

I could just shout TTOI quotes at you all night tbh.

My fave is when Mannion is on the cringey away day (when mr tickle dies) and he's sitting playing the 'yes and ho' game and declares he'd like to do away with computers so he doesn't have to receive any more of Stuart's (fucking) emails. That whole episode is gold, in fact.

Laugh out loud funny.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 03/01/2020 00:25

I’d love to stop and chat to you but I'd rather have type 2 diabetes

A work of art; the acting, the dialogue, the sheer horror and hilarity (especially if you happen to be a civil servant Wink)

Plus I’d ride Malcolm like a show pony. And Jamie. Preferably at the same time Blush

duckme · 03/01/2020 00:36

I do! I've watched them loads of times and still laugh out loud. Malcolm is my favourite by far. He is a lyrical genius. I also adore Peter Mannion. The Mind Kampf episode is one of my favourites.
I often watch the news and think how wonderful it would be to see a new series based on current events.

Aberforthsgoat · 03/01/2020 01:14

I’ve been rewatching while cluster feeding thanks to this thread.
It’s genius. Even though I know so many of the lines by heart they still make me laugh.
I love Nicola practising walking, Terri is just a brilliant brilliant character “I’m just trying to do my best and still be home by five thirty”

Peter Man-yum and Stewart with his “knowledge is porridge”.
It’s all gold.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 03/01/2020 01:17

It was a huge joy when my ds discovered the thick of it and I got to watch all the series again together with him. When he was travelling over the summer, we’d send each other random Malcolm Tucker quotes. Who’d have thought that the prince of creative swearing could provide such bonding family moments?

Mind you, when we watch it now I sometimes catch myself feeling quite nostalgic for how straight forward politics seemed then. The writing and acting is so pitch perfect and will continue to provide much needed sweary therapy.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/01/2020 01:20

I need to watch it now but it really rubs off and makes me swear more. Fuck.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/01/2020 01:24

What would Malcom Tucker do to Boris Johnson Grin

ILookAtTheFloor · 03/01/2020 08:02

Anyone: "It's on!"

Me, in my head, every time:
"It's on, like Fat Pat's thong!" Grin

I love the incidental characters that we never see like Fatty and Fat Pat 😁
