I’m old enough to remember the original series, and wondered how this one would stack up. Quite enjoying it so far. Loved the violin music they just played.

It's Detectorists for kids! Loving it.

B0bbin · 26/12/2019 19:16

It's ace!

TheSquitz · 26/12/2019 19:22

I'm old enough to remember the Jon Pertwee Worzel, but never watched it. This was lovely, though. Gentle, humorous and beautiful scenery.

VittysCardigan · 26/12/2019 19:29

Also old enough to remember the old version. Loved this a lot. The music by The Unthanks was lovely too

claracluck78 · 26/12/2019 19:35

Loved it and the music. McKenzie Crook has nailed this one.

My two crazy kids also sat hooked by it for the whole hour - the calmest they have been all holidays so far!

Whiskerychinsrock · 26/12/2019 19:37

Creepy AF! I love old Worzel.

Litthefirealready · 26/12/2019 19:52

This was perfect and the kind of tv that we have been missing. Loved it and to hear grumpy ds9 giggling at it was lovely.

Loveislandaddict · 26/12/2019 19:56

@vittyscardigan - thanks for mentioning the unthanks. Wondered who the musicians were.

I agree that Mackenzie Cook nailed it. We all loved watching it.

Tinselette1940 · 26/12/2019 19:58

Mackenzie Crook I meant!

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 26/12/2019 21:02

Was wonderful.

clpsmum · 26/12/2019 21:17

@Whiskerychinsrock agree with you! Not impressed in the slightest

RiveterRosie · 26/12/2019 22:19

I loved it and am looking forward to tomorrow's episode.

MinesaPinot · 26/12/2019 22:25

Me and DH loved it. Gentle humour and Mackenzie Crook was wonderful. Taping tomorrow as we are out but looking forward to it.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/12/2019 22:39

Me and the DDs loved it! We are big Mackenzie Crook fans though, not sure it would have worked quite so well with anyone else in the title role.

justasking111 · 26/12/2019 22:49

Really enjoyed it and I recall the original.

MintyMabel · 26/12/2019 23:46

10yo wouldn't watch it. Says he looks creepy. I have to agree.

Evilmorty · 26/12/2019 23:49

Oh i loved it! So did the kids, we all sat cuddled up on the sofa with the Christmas lights on. I loved the earthy elements that the original only skirted around.

Untrained · 26/12/2019 23:51

I always thought the original was scary/creepy. Preferred this version!

Starlight456 · 26/12/2019 23:51

I saw John pertwee at the theatre as worzel Gummage.

We have recorded the new one

EnidButton · 27/12/2019 05:46

The scarecrows coming to life with the Unthanks music playing was very creepy but then when they were all together talking they were kind of lovely and the 'crop circle' scene was beautiful.

I wasn't keen on the original adaptation as a kid, despite being the right age for it, and
I'll admit to thinking the promo pics of Worzel and Aunt Sally looked awful, so I presumed I wouldn't like it.

I flicked over, by coincidence, as it started and ended up watching the whole thing. The connections to nature etc are very in keeping with The Detectorists vibe. Mackenzie Crook is a bit of a genius isn't he?

I love that the little robin is based on a robin MC is friends with in real life. Because of course MC has a robin as a friend. Xmas Smile

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 27/12/2019 07:28

The music was beautiful, so haunting and evocative of a pagan past. The whole episode was the perfect combination of whimsy and humour.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 27/12/2019 09:16

I didn't like the 70s TV series. I found the silly croaky voice that Jon Pertwee put on quite frightening and I hated his interchangeable heads! I also seem to remember he was constantly under threat of being put on a bonfire by the Crow Man, which always freaked me out.

I loved this one, though. Worzel was still a little bit scary, but lovable as well, and I liked his natty frock coat. I wonder if it will turn out to be part of the uniform of a local regiment or something. The little nods to rural folklore were great. Is it just these two episodes or might there be a series in the future?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/12/2019 11:41

I really wanted to enjoy this. High hopes.

But I couldn't. It was so preachy about the green message and the kids were pretty bad actors as was the OTT-OOO-ARRR_MY LOVERRRRR-bumpkinisation of the adults.

And the WG face prosthetic was horrible. M Crook was not a bad choice to play him still never be Jon Pertwee but I think he was let down by the production.

Gave it 30mins and found myself not even watching any more so turned it off. Very disappointed.

senua · 27/12/2019 11:54

I didn't see the JP version back in the day and have never read the book so I have no other frame of reference.
I think that the prosthetic was overdone, you couldn't see any facial movements so that was a bit creepy.
Other than that, I enjoyed it. At one point I thought they were going to go down the heavy-handed eco-message route but they avoided that easy and cheap ploy. I love the way that MC portrays his love of the countryside - WG had so many echoes of The Detectorists. He doesn't need to hit you over the head with his green message, he just lets the camera and a gentle story do it for him.
