I’m old enough to remember the original series, and wondered how this one would stack up. Quite enjoying it so far. Loved the violin music they just played.

Loved it! I remember the original, but this is much more suited to our times. There’s not enough of this kind of tv Imvho. And I didn’t see anything wrong with the children’s acting. Lovely gentle family viewing. Bravo! More, please!

Knittedfairies · 28/12/2019 14:25

I enjoyed it. I liked that the lighter went out and didn't set fire to the barn when it fell into the straw; I thought it was going to be a 'Casualty' moment.

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/12/2019 14:25

Loved it!

I love the way he portrays the countryside, it has a tone like nothing else on TV.

Agree. MC is hugely talented. I hope he continues in this vein for ever and ever.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/12/2019 14:49

didn't make sense. Why would they be carrying a plank of wood with a wheel around on it? That's what made it funny. I suppose you either get it or you don't.

I didn't notice anything wrong with the children's acting either.

Riddleofthesands · 28/12/2019 15:18

Running around with a plank of wood with a skipping rope wrapped around it pretending it was a horse is how I spent the 70s. I was a big Dick Turpin fan, same props for Robin Hood.

Pinkarsedfly · 28/12/2019 16:20

Wonderful, gentle and actually very important TV. Messages subtly communicated, wrapped in a story. So beautifully filmed.

I think Mackenzie Crook is a gentle, green genius. I’d rather his influence on young minds than the likes of David Williams.

flowerycurtain · 28/12/2019 16:28

I can't tell you how much I loved this. We just fell down a detectorists hole last night after it.

Rapidly becoming a very big McKenzie crook fan.

Now if only they'd dramatise Jerusalem for tv

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/12/2019 16:37

I’d rather his influence on young minds than the likes of David Williams. I do find DW a bit creepy but Grandpa's Great Escape did bring a tear to my eye and had its own message.

Grafittiqueen · 28/12/2019 16:38

We watched episode 1 last night as a family and we all absolutely loved it! Much better than I thought it was going to be.

RuffleCrow · 28/12/2019 16:42

I loved the original although looking at the dates i must have watched repeats as i was only born in '81.

Looking forward to watching this with the dds when they come back from their dad's.

I like Mackenzie Crook - he seems like being a bit unconventional has made him sweet and thoughtful and appreciative of what's really important in life.

Pinkarsedfly · 28/12/2019 16:43

I meant Walliams...I’ve not seen Grandpa’s Great Escape, to be fair. But I don’t like his later books.

Taddda · 28/12/2019 16:54

I loved this! (The original gave me nightmares as a kid!)...But this was one to watch again, laughed out loud at the 'cow names'- best original (remake!) on TV this Christmas- really hoping for some more from Mackenzie Crook

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 28/12/2019 16:56

The child actors are awful.
Such a shame as apart from that it’s lovely.

Dizzygirl00 · 28/12/2019 17:15

I loved it totally different to the original but wonderful 😊

Leflic · 28/12/2019 17:48

Awful townie dross.

You’d believe it was always summer in the countryside. And no Scarewcrows don’t work ( Wurzel came up with shit about scaring every crow in whatever radius). That’s why small kids were employed as childlabour to run around the fields and why crows are shot now.

The message should be the countryside needs looking after not it’s some theme park for animals.
I liked the original.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/12/2019 18:51

It's a children's programme not a documentary.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 28/12/2019 20:20

"The original" would be the books, and I believe this adaptation was closer to the source material than the 70s series was. And wasn't the fact it was always summer the whole point upon which the plot revolved? In that it wasn't supposed to be summer and there was something wrong? At least watch a thing properly before you criticise it...

SlidingIntoForties · 28/12/2019 20:44

Absolutely loved it.

I live rurally and am well aware there are different seasons - it was still nice to see the countryside in glorious sunshine.

But then in a programme about walking, talking scarecrows I am happy to accept some make believe.

Thought the children were petty good too. Knew someone would bang on about 'inclusivity' as if it's an insult.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 28/12/2019 20:51

I thought it was fantastic- beautiful gentle storytelling and a real credit to MC.

More of this on tv please!!

bakingcupcakes · 28/12/2019 21:05

Would you say it was suitable for a 5 year old? I recorded it to watch with DS and mentioned it to my parents (who haven't watched it) but they think it's not suitable.

leccybill · 28/12/2019 21:23

I thought it was absolutely wonderful. I loved Eartha (?), Worzel's pal, and the story of the trubblemakers all being scared of what their mums would say.
The setting was beautiful. Made me want to move to the countryside!

Marmighty · 28/12/2019 21:24

My 5 year old loved it! As did everyone else of various ages up to 78. Its very gentle, and goes at a lovely pace.

enjoyingscience · 28/12/2019 21:30

Loved this so much. Beautiful, gentle and funny. Hope they make more.

megletthesecond · 28/12/2019 21:33

The first one was lovely.
I thought yesterday episode with the biker scarecrows was possibly too creepy for some kids, slight Tim Burton feel to them.

GothMummy · 28/12/2019 22:36

We all liked it. And we are well aware of the harsh realities of rural farm life as we live it every day! It's escapism. We thought the Trubble Makers were quite Mighty Boosh.
