I’m old enough to remember the original series, and wondered how this one would stack up. Quite enjoying it so far. Loved the violin music they just played.

It's a children's programme not a documentary.
But the problem is the countryside is always portrayed the same way. Talking animals, endless summer, fields of Timothy grass.

Same stupid stereotypes as London being full of white cockneys or the North being flat caps and whippets. Or American films having every baddy with an English accent. Lazy.

In the age of environmentalism it wouldn’t kill them to portray the counyryside authentically for once.

longwayoff · 28/12/2019 23:53

Ffs @leflic its an entertaining children's programme not David Attenborough. Stick to Countryfile.

5foot5 · 29/12/2019 00:19

Awful townie dross.
The message should be the countryside needs looking after not it’s some theme park for animals.

It's a children's programme, does it need a message? And where exactly does this portray the countryside as a theme park for animals?

I liked the original.
Which - the books by Barbara Euphan Todd or the 1980s TV adaptation? I think this adaptation is probably closer to the books. I am old enough to remember the Jon Pertwee Worzel and like it very much, but I think this version is terrific.

I think everything about it is just beautiful. The credits, the music, yes the idyllic settings. Maybe it would be more realistic to have a farmyard full of old tyres but it wouldn't be so lovely to watch. I have enjoyed this more than anything else on TV this Christmas and I don't know why some people are banging on about the child actors - they seem fine to me.

TildaTurnip · 29/12/2019 00:30

Love it. It is deliberately much closer to the books and I read that Mackenzie Crook said that he wrote it without any romantic themes in because children aren’t interested in that. He’s brilliant.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 29/12/2019 00:34

I don't know why some people are banging on about the child actors - they seem fine to me.

Personally I thought all the acting was bad (said earlier on) - the kids were stereotyped and wooden, and the adults were overacting their socks off to be the biggest country bumpkins going.

But I also found it a turgid preachy story so I expect I noticed the acting more than someone who liked it/was more forgiving.

I wish I'd liked it more though, I feel quite disappointed I didn't.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 29/12/2019 09:16

I thought the kids were OK. I think it was the boy's first acting job and he was a bit hesitant, but perfectly fine. Ultimately, it was a children's show, so the style of acting reflected that. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much if it had been on an ordinary Sunday teatime (as its natural home would probably be) but I just found it so refreshing to have a slice of rural summer in the middle of all the Christmas specials.

I grew up rurally too and still live within 2 minutes of the countryside, and no, it wasn't an accurate portrayal of a farmer's life, but does it really matter? It was a kids' comedy drama, that wasn't its remit.

Sparklybaublefest · 29/12/2019 11:06

Jon Pertwee was a horrible man in rl.

I watched a bit, I liked it, couldnt tear myself away, either that or I was just too tired too move

PeriComoToes · 29/12/2019 11:14

Really wanted to like this as I loved the original.

Stopped watching after 30 minutes.

Aunt Sally was all wrong and I couldn't warm to the new Worzle unfortunately. I did like the portrayal of Mr Braithwaite though.

Am glad that others liked it, I think I must be the only person that didn't.

The authentic countryside have many talking scarecrows does it?

Loveislandaddict · 29/12/2019 16:53

@ikiboo, your talking scarecrows comment did make me chuckle.

I agree though, the countryside was portrayed a bit twee, chocolate-box-, although that was partly the charm of the programme. Pure escapism.

OP posts:
LadyGuffers · 29/12/2019 16:57

Twee maybe, but no more so that Call the Midwife shows 1950s/60s London or Downton showed 1920s land owners or Larkrise etc etc.

I loved WG and am really hoping for a Sunday night series.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 29/12/2019 17:05

Has no one mentioned the fart scene in episode 2? Now that was hilarious!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 29/12/2019 17:09

Mackenzie Crooks line ‘it smells like someone’s pushed air through poo’ was genius 🤣.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/12/2019 17:18

We never found who it was that farted! Grin

I loved the John Pertwee WG, he was a part of my childhood. I think MC nailed it. I loved it all. Wish he'd incorporated the tale of the Green Man though.

Rhododumdums...... just lovely.

Oh and 'like a spadger'. Spadger was used in my family to describe someone with thin, bandy legs. Thin like a sparrow yet bandy like a badger...... now I know where it came fromGrin

Jodri · 30/12/2019 15:29

We loved it! Thought the all the actors were spot on and great. Wasn’t sure he was going to pull it off but Mackenzie Crook is very talented and he did it. Superb! Really hope there is a series. Smile

Welshponyslave · 01/01/2020 10:15

I have really enjoyed it, I hope it become a series. Lovely to find a show that appeals to all the family.
