I’m old enough to remember the original series, and wondered how this one would stack up. Quite enjoying it so far. Loved the violin music they just played.

I loved it. I'm just old enough to remember the Jon Pertwee Worzel but can't recall how closely it stuck to the books (which I've read). Mackenzie Crook's Worzel seems visually more accurate as the book Worzel had a mangold wurzel for a head and the facial prosthetics reflect this.

Thought the kids were good actors and liked Steve Pemberton as grumpy Farmer Braithwaite.

Mackenzie Crook really knows how to do gentle, rural, folklorey loveliness on screen.

Riddleofthesands · 27/12/2019 13:11

We loved it, techy DS 16 asked if we could watch part 2 tonight, DD loved the gentle vibe, and said it was so relaxing. Agree with comment about the preachy green message made by Buzz but otherwise it was great. I think I will order The Detectorists dvd.

Squiz81 · 27/12/2019 15:19

Totally right @Cooroo loved the Unthanks music, I loved their magpie song in Detectorists too. It's made me want to read the books

augustusglupe · 27/12/2019 19:28

I loved the first one. The children can’t act. Typical bbc, as long as it ticks boxes, who cares..

longwayoff · 27/12/2019 19:56

Oh, have firmly entered second childhood, this is lovely, what an achievement, it's very clever and beautifully cast and acted.

TheSquitz · 27/12/2019 20:02

I think the children acted really well! I loved this and even had a tear in my eye at the end. I also loved Zoe Wanamaker's jacket!

Scarscar · 27/12/2019 20:05

For me that was the best thing on TV this Christmas. I am turning into a massive Mackenzie Crook fan. I love the way he portrays the countryside, it has a tone like nothing else on TV.
Definitely was a Detectorists for kids. Can't wait to see what he does next.

shggg245 · 27/12/2019 20:20

I'm in a drug induced haze ( painkillers) and thought it was bloody brilliant. I was also a massive fan of the original series so was expecting to be disappointed with this.

Michael Palin was fantastic and I cried like a baby when he said 'sentinal of the seasons, guardian of the gradiants, worzel - scarecrow of scatterbrook.

My 15 ds laughed at me crying but even he thougt was moving. Perfect. Smile

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/12/2019 20:28

I watched the Jon Pertwee one and liked it then but I also love this version and think it has been updated well. I don't know why anyone would object to the green message, it's very necessary and Worzel saying it is the children that need to save the planet (words to that effect) is true. I also thought the biker scarecrows were hilarious.

I'm a bit in love with Mackenzie Crook, I'm a huge Detectorists fan too.

Loveislandaddict · 27/12/2019 20:46

Loved Michael Palin’s character.

Think I preferred this to the original.

But he doesnt swap heads! I seem to remember that being a big thing.
And he flirted with Aunt Sally , this time she is just a scary grumpy old Aunt.

I don't hate it but it's not what I had hoped.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 27/12/2019 22:32

In the book, Aunt Sally was just his aunt too - I read an interview with Mackenzie Crook where he said he'd gone back to the original interpretation of their relationship because he didn't think kids were really interested in romance. I think that's fair enough, and it avoids me having to think about the logistics of a scarecrow/wooden doll relationship.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 27/12/2019 22:35

Bloody loved it. Was ‘Harley Davidson’ Toby Jones???
Series please.

PinkBuffalo · 27/12/2019 22:41

I hardly ever watch TV, but have been watching this with my mum in her room at the nursing home. We both enjoyed it, but I did find it a bit creepy in places with the scarecrows etc. my mum remembers the first one from when she was young so it was good for her Smile

drigon · 28/12/2019 01:29

I much preferred this version to the 70s/80s (?) one. I felt that the old version was more for children than this modern Worzel. This one was relaxing and had gentle comedy and beautiful scenery.

Horehound · 28/12/2019 01:38

I haven't seen the original. I'm 33.
I watched this one thought it was...ok

Thought Wurzel was a bit of an arse but reasonably funny.
Hated the "bad" crows with the stupid bike stuff. .

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/12/2019 09:36

Hated the "bad" crows with the stupid bike stuff.
Assuming you mean scarecrows. Really? That was one of the best bits.

longwayoff · 28/12/2019 10:18

Nice to see Michael Palin. The bikers reminded me of the knights and horses in the Holy Grail. Neigh.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 28/12/2019 10:42

The cow graffiti was excellent. Leather milk bag Grin

AuntieDolly · 28/12/2019 11:07

I loved it, especially the music. So gentle

Riddleofthesands · 28/12/2019 11:22

Loved it, loved it. So inventive. Cow scene we laughed out loud. Palin was excellent. Yes to the biker scarecrows being Holy Grailish.

ShowOfHands · 28/12/2019 11:27

I loved it. Crook is very talented. He does gentle, folk/nature/tradition inspired work so well. Always a touch of the eccentric macabre. The whole family enjoyed it, across four generations. Quite possibly our favourite show of Christmas 2019.

Horehound · 28/12/2019 12:58

@CaptainMyCaptain yep I mean the hell's angel/yobbish intimidating bikes bit. It really irritated me. Also seemed a bit stupid since they were like half bits of bikes etc.
It didn't make sense. Why would they be carrying a plank of wood with a wheel around on it?

Wallabyone · 28/12/2019 14:04

We watched both episodes and all of us (ages 4-37) loved it! I thought it was just so lovely, and took me right back to the brilliant and relaxing tv if my childhood.

Geoffreythecat · 28/12/2019 14:11

I read the books as a child and watched the original series.

The children's awful acting spoilt it this time. There must be better child actors out there.
