I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

The media hardly needs an excuse to pile on a middle aged woman! That's what it does!

Claire was young, blank looking and beautiful and didn't stray a centimetre from the public image the Queen has carefully cultivated - of course the DM etc loved her!

Reallybadidea · 18/11/2019 16:36

Oh my goodness, I never cry at TV, but the Princess Alice/DofE storyline had me doing proper gulping sobs. The dogs were looking at me in a very puzzled way Blush

NoSauce · 18/11/2019 16:44

Nah it’s nothing to do with her age. There’s some amazing older actresses. I just see Olivia Coleman.

ManonBlackbeak · 18/11/2019 16:44

OC is staunch Labour so thats probably why the DM hates her. They attack anyone in the public eye who dares to be openly left wing.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 17:27

Claire Foy cut her teeth doing period dramas though

Little Dorrit as the lead
Wolf Hall as Anne Boleyn
The Night Watch which was a WW2 thing

I can't think of m/any things OC has done outside of The Favourite that have been period.
She had been chosen for this and filmed a lot of it prior to the Oscar though

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/11/2019 17:30

Claire Foy was brilliant as Anne Boleyn, the memory of the execution scene still gives me the shivers. I like OC though, and can't really see the problem with her in the Crown.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 17:33

I don't really have a problem with her as such

I just don't think she does that old school aristocracy cut glass voice, half as well as :

Claire Foy
Matt Smith
Vanessa Kirby

Or the revelations of this new series :

Josh O'Connor, Erin Doherty and Tobias Menzies

RuffleCrow · 18/11/2019 17:35

Where the media is concerned the age of a woman is always a factor @NoSauce

Fairylea · 18/11/2019 17:46

I am actually missing Vanessa Kirby as Margaret more than anything. HBC is okaaay but I don’t think she has the same grace and class as VK.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 18/11/2019 17:51

@LadyIsabellaWrotham He's called Angus something - it's quite a Scottish surname but I believe he's actually American.

Not that the first thing I did was look him up, or anything Hmm

GiantKitten · 18/11/2019 18:01

Josh O'Connor is only a revelation if you’ve never seen the Durrells Grin

EleanorReally · 18/11/2019 18:28

Also just seen The Princess Alice story, more emotion from me,

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/11/2019 18:28

Jane Lapotaire was fantastic. I loved her interaction with the jeweller!

Awrite · 18/11/2019 18:57

Waaaah! My internet is down. Fault on the line, engineer coming out tomorrow.

I want to watch more dammit.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 19:10

Never seen the Durrells

CoolCarrie · 18/11/2019 19:34

Have Wallis and David appeared yet?

I wonder who will be cast in the next lot? Judi Dench As Queenie?

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/11/2019 19:35

Wallis and David were in the last series.

GiantKitten · 18/11/2019 19:44

David will die in this series, won’t he

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 19:45

They did film funeral scenes

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 19:46

Posted too soon, but they filmed 3 and 4 back to back whilst they had the cast all in the one place, so it could be next series.

I'm only Ep 7.

GiantKitten · 18/11/2019 19:52

3 covers up to 1977? So he’ll be in this one.

Wallis died much later, she’ll be in 4

onceandneveragain · 18/11/2019 21:28

rufflecrow while usually I would agree with you wrt people judging women more heavily by their looks, for me it's not a case of looking too old, it is being too old.

Vanessa Kirby is 31 while HBC is 54. In 1964 (when S3 starts) Princess Margaret would have been 33/34. I don't think it's being sexist to point out if someone is two decades older than the character they are playing, conceivably the third series could have retained the original actors who were closer to their ages, and done the swap at a later date?

In other thoughts, I was surprised at reading an interview when OC said she had never heard of Aberfan before reading the scripts. I am much younger and have grown up knowing about it - but then I am Welsh. Is it one of those 'just missed' generational historical things elsewhere in the UK?

WineOrGinOrBoth · 18/11/2019 21:30

Episode 3 was heartbreaking.
HBC is growing on me still not convinced by OC though.

Dh & I couldn’t get over how bad the actress playing princess Alice Greek was. It didn’t even sound Greek. I know she’s not Greek but they could maybe have dubbed it? I don’t know. She was fantastic though once the Greek bit was over.

2 extremely moving episodes.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 21:36

Very surprising. I'd heard of if and I wasn't born til 25 years later roughly.

RuffleCrow · 18/11/2019 21:41

Born in the early 80s. Spent loads of time in Wales as a child. Also never heard about Aberfan until now. Although the words 'welsh mining disaster' have definitely made it into my consciousness in an unspecific way prior to this.
