Illicit drama starting next Tuesday 9pm.

Looks good!

Some RL examples, the men aren't that attractive though:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/08/07/conman-marco-acklom-has-pleaded-guilty-defrauding-ex-girlfriend/

If their dad had brought home a much younger GF would the children be so disapproving? They'd probably worry their inheritance would be diluted by the fact a young woman could have children but doubt they would say that their father was vunerable or that they would stalk the woman after a few weeks of dating.

Julia seems to me to very detached, distracted almost. I don't really "get" her.

Africa2go · 15/11/2019 11:14

Also loved it. Watched Episodes 3-6 back to back. Think Julia was very realistic actually but agree her children were awful.

BeautifulTrauma1 · 15/11/2019 13:40

I really enjoyed it, was really disappointed with the ending though and expected more with the flashbacks rather than just a cut and dried storyline.

I have never wanted to punch someone so much as I did with Benjamin in this show though, he is actually odious. But I guess it shows he played the part really well!

BitOfFun · 15/11/2019 14:21

Do you mean the older brother? If so, i agree with you!

BeautifulTrauma1 · 15/11/2019 14:31

Nope, I mean Benjamin. The toyboy so to speak.

The son is trying to protect his family, and looks very much like Jacob from Law & Order UK! He's doing it in a very odd way but you can tell he's trying to protect his mother at the end of the day. I had this discussion on Twitter - if this was my Mum I would be a lot more polite but wouldn't be instantly trusting of someone coming into her life in that exact scenario. Plus, all the present buying, splashing money, him saying no to things but really meaning yes, he's absolutely vile and a gold-digger. He made my skin crawl watching him and his passive aggressive nature with her family.

ShellsandSand · 15/11/2019 15:31

@BeautifulTrauma1 .... I absolutely agree. I hated him. He had no redeeming qualities whatsoever aside from being physically attractive.

dogsdinnerlady · 15/11/2019 15:59

Not even physically attractive (in my view anyway). I think he is weasel-like and creepy. There is an unhealthy mother/son vibe thing going on between them. Still don't know where she got her money? What is ex husband's job? How come she kept house etc after they split?

BeautifulTrauma1 · 15/11/2019 16:07

@dogsdinnerlady That's how I felt, the mother/son vibe and you could tell how offended Julia was by it.

There was the whole other side of his life that was never explained, the job he had, his eviction, it's like the siblings just gave up on trying to figure him out which is disappointing. I'm pretty sure they've set this up for a second series and there has to be more about him that comes out - surely Julia isn't that thick that she can't see what he's doing. The whole scene with the 'well what do you want to do darling' and him wanting a Masters in History which is pointless, taking Dell's bedroom as his study and getting her to buy him computers and upgrading cars, WHY CAN'T SHE SEE IT?! He was odious, and it had a I'm pushing your kids out of your life vibe about it that she was too oblivious to see. She's the woman that would end up in the Daily Mail Female section about 'My toyboy stole my world' type story in a John Lewis outfit and an inset picture of them in the Barbour coats in happier times out in Devon.

derxa · 15/11/2019 16:14

I think there will be a second series. His smirking at the end set the scene for that.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2019 16:31

The older brother was such a vile sleaze, and plain nasty to boot.

BackInAtLast · 15/11/2019 16:51

Have binge watched today and yesterday...loved it!

Julia Ormond was great, a few character flaws...but I thought a good script with good female characters. Loved seeing the daughter, bu Julia Rooper, I love HWB she pops up again.

Benjamin was gorgeous, wondered if he was wearing lenses to make his eyes darker?

Am certainly hanging around museums now just in case...actually my next date is in a museum next week...I must have subconsciously suggested it!

SPOILER DELETED BY MNHQ

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/11/2019 17:00

I think the door has been deliberately left open for a second series. Whether or not it gets commissioned is another story. Aside from the locations I don't know it had much substance.

1forAll74 · 15/11/2019 17:02

I kind of liked the first episode, although it was a bit lack lustre. I watched it.because I was once in this kind of situation years ago, me the older woman as such.My situation, was way more exciting though and a riskier. It's early days, but I think that things won't end well for Julia.

Goldenbear · 15/11/2019 17:21

Yes, I have seen the whole lot on my day off! Was cutting up vegetables at the same time though so did get something done.

I think Leo was the most realistic character out of the children. I have met loads of Leo types, his efforts to unite them are probably the most realistic in terms of action the children would take to prevent their Mum making a mistake.

Elderflower14 · 15/11/2019 17:24

Thankyou MNHQ for removing the spoiler...

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 15/11/2019 17:44

If their dad had brought home a much younger GF would the children be so disapproving?

But their dad does have a much younger GF. Marsha IRL is early 40s and looks young in the drama, whereas the dad is 60+ Typical double standards in that old man/young woman hardly anyone bats an eyelid but other way round and people get outraged.

MadgeMak · 15/11/2019 18:11

I think the Marsha character isn't in her 40s, she did say that she had been friends with Julia for more than 30 years.

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/11/2019 18:36

The actress playing Marsha is only 43 and looks noticeably younger than Julia Ormond, so I had to laugh when she said she'd known them for 34 years!

The80sweregreat · 15/11/2019 18:46

Just watching epi one.
This is just middle class drama for the middle classes! Reminds me of Apple tree yard but only seen episode one.
The daughter looks like Tracey Emin and the young man is v dishy.
The woman's hair is annoying me. She is very attractive but I guess his probably a baddie! The watch buying is a clue.
The younger son is horrible.
I am hooked though! It's a middle class Eastenders!

The80sweregreat · 15/11/2019 18:58

Young girl of 20 plus with a 60 year old man? Wouldn't be acceptable!
We do judge regardless of what people think!

StrawberryGoo · 15/11/2019 19:35

Benjamin was gorgeous, wondered if he was wearing lenses to make his eyes darker?

I don’t think he was wearing contacts - Ben Barnes has these beautifully dark eyes anyway

Elderflower14 · 15/11/2019 19:50

Can people PLEASE STOP PUTTING SPOILERS ON THE THREAD!!!!
Some of us want to watch week by week and not binge watch!! 😡 😡 😡 😡

SmellyToes1 · 15/11/2019 19:51

Queen I’m struggling with that to. I can’t work out of it’s meant to be double standards or if she’s meant to be older than 43 (although she looks younger!).

Other than that I’m loving it, Waiting for dc to go to bed so I can open the wine and start episode 6
