I think Ive only noticed a couple of patronising sounding comments just this past episode but never before!

She has honestly been making 'aw, you're crying'/'you're so sweet' comments ever since she became main host. She's particularly bad when a contestant is small/young/both e.g. Chelsea (sp?) and Louisa Lyttleton (sp?), who were two of the youngest slebs on it ever and both got LOADS of 'Aw, your wickle face' stuff. And just about every small couple (basically whoever Janette has!) gets it too.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 16/10/2019 14:06

Tess-isms

we all really liked it
Everybody’s standing up!
Did you love it? You looked like you loved it
They all loved it
Coming from him, that means a lot (Craig)
His little hands are all sweaty
Her little hands are all shaking
Aw ickle face
Channelling Cartman - let me taste your tears, soooooo sweet! Wink Grin
Come here lovely lady/cheeky chappie
Easy tiger
THE CLAW (monkseal

Horehound · 16/10/2019 14:11

Tbh I say "little" quite a lot but I mean it as a term of endearment although granted I may not say it to an adult. I don't see what's wrong with these?:

Above all, when they did the tribute to Brucie and she showed genuine emotion and teared up, I warmed to her from then. I agree. She actually seemed human and I liked her a lot more for it.
Note I did not yell at the telly Aw she's crying Grin
I do agree running a live show with people yelling in your ear, an audience, and of course the judges, slebs and dancers, is a big deal and a tough gig.

Horehound, in isolation those comments aren't dreadful, no. For me the problem is that a) she always bloody says the same few things, like she's got a checklist of Things People Say; and b) the patronising way in which she says most of them.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 16/10/2019 16:36

Recent comments have reminded me, I remember one young male contestant being totally overwhelmed (it may have been Jay when he won, but my memory ain't what it used to be), and as the camera panned away you just got a glimpse of Claudia going to him and taking him in her arms like a child. She went way up in my estimation at that point, it was so genuine.

ArseDarkly · 16/10/2019 17:03

She is such a bot and can't help it, everything about her screams AWKWARD! and sets the nerves on edge. The things that are great about Strictly - the sense of genuine excitement, joy, expression, fun - she represents none of them.

They won't get rid of her though so I just mute her as much as possible.

theliverpoolone · 16/10/2019 17:17

Absolutely. The 'little face' and 'little hands' comments seem to be getting worse. I'd be very stony-faced if I was a celebrity on the receiving end. There is nothing 'natural' about her at all.

CassandraCross · 16/10/2019 18:26

Bruce Forsyth used to use the "We all loved it/they are all standing up/we thought it was great" comments on loop as well.

I just get the impression that Tess doesn't know what to say or how to say it and also doesn't seem to have that easy, natural way with people that other people have. It all seems a bit stiff and forced. However, I do envy her height, figure and looks and imo she looks better now than when she first started on Strictly and weirdly seems more self assured in herself but that doesn't seem to have helped her in her interactions with the celebrities or the dancers.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2019 20:53

Yes but "Brucie" was a twat.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 16/10/2019 21:02

I've been muting Tess for years Grin

I'm in complete agreement - she sets my nerves on edge. Muting interrupts the flow of the show however Sad
I can't think of another presenter that I find similarly unwatchable. Unfortunately I put Darcy's judging in the same category. Thank god for Motsi.

I actually loved Bruce presenting. He seemed genuine and interested and could be off the cuff. I'm a child of the 80s so I have a certain nostalgia for him.

I don't really rate Tess's presenting but agree that she's infinitely better in other settings. I wonder if some of it's the producers trying to mimic Bruce's style and force a lot of things like the clapping along and applause and "looooook! They're on their feet!". Coming from a modern woman the nonsense she churns out sounds like 70s light entertainment. Somehow it worked for Bruce in a cheesy Dad-joke kind of way.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 16/10/2019 21:03

I try not to think of how much she's being paid to be so shit.

Clawdy · 16/10/2019 22:18

I only started watching it after Bruce F left, because I couldn't stand him. So I can put up with Tess quite happily. In fact I find Claudia's attempts at being funny more annoying, though I don't think she's done it as much this series.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/10/2019 08:07

Got to agree about Tess, it just isn't a comfortable role for her. I also find Claudia very irritating. I'm sure she's an absolute hoot in person but they just look like a third rate comedy double act with Claudia peering up at Tess through her fringe.

To be fair there isn't much for her to say between the dancing and the judging. It's Tess's equivalent of "Have you come far?"

Brucie WAS a twat. It needed someone with genuine warmth, not an ego on legs.

I suppose Davina McCall would be considered too big for the gig, but I think she and Rylan could be great.

peachgreen · 17/10/2019 08:38

I didn't watch until post-Bruce too, for the same reasons as Clawdy. Tess is a terrible presenter but she's sort of part of the whole ridiculous experience of Strictly for me!

BonnesVacances · 17/10/2019 09:46

I just wish someone would tell both Tess and Claudia that they don't need to look at each other when the other is speaking to camera. No-one else does it and it's just poor presenting imo.

SoupDragon · 17/10/2019 10:21

Personally I think it looks odd when the non speaking one is looking at the camera rather than the other presenter.

DarlingNikita · 17/10/2019 11:00

Gareth, I totally agree about Bruce F. His style worked perfectly well in the context (and I think he knew exactly what he was doing; it was quite tongue-in-cheek); but for someone like Tess who doesn't have his background it doesn't make any sense. Bruce also had a natural way with an audience and the slebs/dancers that she just doesn't.

ppeatfruit · 17/10/2019 12:36

I'm trying to remember the couples who deliberately look past her, there are some Grin Susan Calman wasn't very pleased with Tess.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 17/10/2019 17:33

Thanks Nikita it seems like opinion is divided 😂

I found him a 'safe pair of hands' and he lent a certain gravitas to proceedings! The old-timey atmosphere they try - and fail imo - to create at Blackpool was sort of present every week. It just felt comforting 😂

I didn't detect any animosity but I'd love to hear some proper Strictly gossip about the various personalities Wink
You don't really hear much apart from the 'Strictly Curse' and there's allegedly a lot more shagging that goes on than anyone hears about Shock Grin

I remember Bruce chasing McFly off stage when Harry won!

I only started watching in series 6 so missed a lot of Bruce-led shows.

I don't mind Claudia's humour - at least she can adlib - but I don't like her with Tess. The fringe, squinting and their comedy schtick is seriously annoying. I blame the producers mostly - it's very contrived.
I heard Claudia's anxious about an eye condition but she looks great with a slightly shorter fringe. Just take a cm off woman!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 17/10/2019 17:34

What happened with Susan pleat?! I didn't really enjoy her and KKFG's partnership so I probably missed it.

DarlingNikita · 17/10/2019 18:42

he lent a certain gravitas to proceedings!

Yes, he was basically the last living link to the Great British Tradition of music hall and variety entertainment.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/10/2019 18:49

I hate tess, think she looks amazing and dresses beautifully but her constant “they’re on their feet!” “Oh look at your little face!” And ALWAYS talking over the judges is beyond annoying

I’d take her over Davina McCall though

SoupDragon · 17/10/2019 19:24

When Bruce was presenting, I remember loads of posters complaining about him and calling for him to retire and for Tess to take over... 😂😂

Clawdy · 17/10/2019 19:29

To me, the words"Bruce" and "gravitas " just somehow don't go together Grin I also remember him making fun of one or two contestants, mimicking their accents, in a way that bordered on unpleasantness.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/10/2019 19:55

When Bruce was presenting, I remember loads of posters complaining about him and calling for him to retire and for Tess to take over...

I remember loads of us wanting him to retire - I can't recall a huge demand for Tess to take over.

I can remember some people suggesting Ant and Dec . . .Grin
