Anyone watching? Helen Hunt appears to have an entirely new face.

Perhaps it was all about Hilda? Frau Rossler came hone and asked her to get changed. Tthey packed a suitcase as if to leave, but then perhaps she changed her mind. Maybe the burnt letters were the ones sent by the authorities telling them to send Hilda to an "institution"?

Given all the different storylines, I do think they are rushing some aspects and the timescales are anyone's guess - we should be reaching the Battle of Britain July/August (although it looks like February thanks to the winter filming). The escape line bit where they sent Lois's brother to Spain was rushed. It could have taken weeks to arrange that and get him there safely.( Side issue - there was a brilliant French drama called Resistance on More 4 a few years ago which I recommend ). Also, not sure about Harry joining SOE - I assume it's the very early days of SOE before it became more organised because it was very haphazard, I don't fancy his chances and what exactly is he going to do?

Yes, I could see another series happening if they've got the budget and the viewing figures.

We don’t know what happened to Kasia’s brother, we last saw him on a boat at Dunkirk.

Medievalist · 04/11/2019 07:46

I absolutely love this drama and can forgive a bit of poetic licence/factual inaccuracy. It is after all a drama not a documentary and quibbling over whether scenes were filmed at the right time of year seems a bit nit-picky to me.

I think it portrays the chaos, confusion and disbelief incredibly well. I love Harry's mum and the obvious goodness that lies beneath the cold veneer and snobbery.

Rhubarb01 · 04/11/2019 08:52

First and foremost I am enjoying the drama, think it's well made and would like to see another series, so all good.

My point about the weather is just that it doesn't really provide any visual clues in respect of the timescales or how much time has elapsed between events (aside from Lois saying she's 8 months pregnant). At times you are left wondering where we've got to in the grand scheme of things. Upthread there was a discussion about Kasia's brother and the likelihood of him walking to Dunkirk. He was seen running away from Russian soldiers in the occupied eastern zone of Poland (in snow -so winter) but next seen walking through a wood - which turns out to be Belgium (presumably May?). I've been a history student, so I guess I like to know where I am with things and visually it isn't always obvious, as they aren't even trying to fake it. Well that's just me, I suppose, sorry folks! Smile

Anyone else think that a romance between Douglas and Robina is on the cards?

Medievalist · 04/11/2019 09:09

Rhubarb - I think for many of us Lois's pregnancy is a key indicator of time passing. I certainly wouldn't be looking to a Sunday evening drama to provide complete factual accuracy!

Medievalist · 04/11/2019 09:15

Anyone else think that a romance between Douglas and Robina is on the cards?

Most definitely!

HeavyChopping · 04/11/2019 15:32

I'm loving this drama. The scenes with Hilda and her parents are incredibly thought provoking. Also the glimpses of Nazis who took risks to help people. It really shows how terrifying it must have been for everyone (even the Nazis) to live through.

EleanorReally · 08/11/2019 07:29

Just started this.
very good so far

Definitelyrandom · 10/11/2019 01:26

Picked this up very belatedly and have just watched the first episode so far. Can anyone explain Harry’s accent? He was presumably brought up near Manchester, has a very posh mother, presumably went to public school - either boarding or locally. But he speaks with a fair few glottal stops and a bit of a London tinge. Surely anyone of his background at the time would have spoken very much RP? With a bit of Manchester if he wanted to be a bit of a rebel?

Medievalist · 10/11/2019 08:33

But he speaks with a fair few glottal stops and a bit of a London tinge

The actor is from London. Not that unusual surely to be able to detect a bit of an actor's natural accent?

Definitelyrandom · 10/11/2019 10:11

He’s an actor, so you would think that he’s supposed to be able to do different accents properly. Having looked him up, I see he went to Eton and Cambridge so I wonder whether the glottal stops and London accent are a bit of a posh boy affectation.

EleanorReally · 10/11/2019 10:59

i have seen 4 episodes now but dh has gone off this Sad
disappointed,
but I will catch up since I am enjoying it

Medievalist · 10/11/2019 17:55

DefinitelyRandom - does it matter? Fairly minor thing to pick on.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/11/2019 22:13

Slightly traumatised by that ending! Can't believe they will make us wait to see if Harry and kasia make it out alive, I'm thinking Harry will but Kasia won't 🙁

It all seems slightly convenient that Jans brother ended up in a local mental health hospital and that Harry was rescuing his wife!! But I suppose that is does help the storyline.

I cheered when Lois agreed to marry Vernon!! I am a little bit in love with Vern 😁

MissEliza · 10/11/2019 22:28

I have a feeling Kasia won't make it. The light seems to have completely gone from her and it looked like she was just going to give up.
I cheered to when Lois said yes to Vernon. I'm not sure she said yes for the right reasons but I'd love to see them make a go of it.
I'm assuming we'll have to wait another year for a second series. It's probably the best thing I've seen about World War Two. I'm a graduate of history and politics and I studied the war from so many different perspectives. I think it's fantastic to see something that really shows the impact war has on people of different classes, nationalities etc. I think having the German characters who didn't agree with the Natzis is refreshing too.

UrsulaPandress · 10/11/2019 22:39

Well that ending was a bit meh. As it was the last one I expected the threads to be tied up. Looked at my clock and realised there were only two minutes left.

I’ve loved the series though. Has made me feel physically ill at times with nerves.

Clawdy · 10/11/2019 22:46

Can't decide if the Lois - Vernon thing will work. He's sweet and kind, but not attractive, and she's really in love with Harry. Looking forward to next series now. Finding the doctor character and storyline a bit boring though.

OneForTheRoadThen · 10/11/2019 22:51

Oh God I was just thinking to myself about 5 minutes before the end how nice it was that all 3 Polish siblings would be reunited!

So is the doctor or Randy Nancy's child?

I'm going to miss this series, glad there is a new series in the making. I have the feeling that was a fairly recent decision as some parts of this season have been sped through.

Sewingbea · 10/11/2019 22:52

I think Vernon is attractive!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/11/2019 22:57

Vernon is def attractive!

So the dr is Nancy's son I'm assuming via rape? ☹️ I wonder who bought him up?

I admire Nancy's character, really brave not to just flee back to America.

MissEliza · 10/11/2019 23:40

I think Vernon is lovely inside and out!
I agree the doctor in Paris storyline is getting a bit tedious.

Thefemalekeithrichards · 10/11/2019 23:42

@HeavyChopping

‘Penelope Keith ‘ 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Rhubarb01 · 11/11/2019 07:25

Despite the many historical inaccuracies (and I do think a serious drama about World War Two needs to do its best to get things right - one thing in episode 7 made me laugh aloud) I'm still glad there will be another series and I will watch it. I agree with previous comments that the two best characters in this are Douglas and Robina (Sean Bean and Lesley Manville).I'm really enjoying their story evolve.

Wizzbangpop · 11/11/2019 07:41

I like vernon but I don't like lois and vernon

That meeting with kaisha and harry was all of the emotions
Glad it's got a second season. It's the first time in a while I've shouted at the tv in a drama multiple times
