Anyone watching? Helen Hunt appears to have an entirely new face.

OP posts:

I also wondered who the Penelope Keith lookalike was. I didn't recognise that it was Helen Hunt at all.

I found it a bit disjointed, but engaging enough that I'll keep watching.

Davros · 03/10/2019 20:51

It's a big MEH from me. Where is Steven Poliakoff when you needhim and I can't bear his stuff! Helen Hunt looks like Odo, she probably lives in a bucket

FatherFintanFay · 04/10/2019 08:59

Good god no, not Poliakoff. He's already had a shot at period drama this year and I can't stand his mannered writing style. I think this is going to get better - it was the first episode and there was a lot of "setting up" but there were some promising characters and storylines.

Rumboogie · 04/10/2019 21:54

I hated it. Historically it is bullshit and it always irritates me when no attention is paid to authenticity in costume/hair/makeup and especially accent and idiom. This was particularly grating as I had just come from watching the brilliane Home Fires on ITV.

Clawdy · 06/10/2019 22:38

Anybody watching tonight? It's becoming more obvious that Kasia stayed to fight, as someone said upthread. I am finding the gay storyline rather boring and it feels a bit tacked on. Feel sorry for poor little Jan having to live with the horrid Lesley Manville character!

Wizzbangpop · 06/10/2019 22:45

I watched it this evening . Really getting into it. I think everyone's character is a lot more intertwined than meets the eye and this will become more explained as it goes on.

Is the drama adapted from a book or an original screenplay?

which1 · 06/10/2019 22:49

I like it.
I'm worried for the little girl with epilepsy and the neighbour eyeing her up in the cinema.

CoolCarrie · 06/10/2019 22:50

Yes, we are watching. It unfortunately reminds me of The Winds Of War, which , for those of you not old enough to remember, was a American “epic”, and wasn’t very good
It’s all a wee bit tokenism imo,; the guy American doctor with his black musician lover, perhaps a nod to Cabaret? Are they going to in up in a camp? Probably
The young German child with epilepsy, reminds me of The Man In The High Castle, covering up a child’s illness in fear
. The writer should have stayed with the Polish storyline, that would be strong enough on its own, without the other stuff.
I totally agree about the wonderful Home Fires, ITV were bastards to cancel it, and then go out to waste money on shit!
Thankful the writer of Home Fires, Simon Block, has continued the story in book form.

CoolCarrie · 06/10/2019 22:54

I shouted at the tv when Kasia poor mother was murdered, that was shocking, and brutal . I will watch it next week as I found myself caring what happens next, especially to Jan and Kasia, the rest not so much.

BuckingFrolics · 06/10/2019 22:57

It's a bit paint by numbers imo.

Epileptic girl being hidden cue Helen hunt discovery of Nazi murder of disabled children

Polish woman joins resistance cue Warsaw uprising

Evil woman with no mothering instinct cue maternal love breakthrough

Shabby cowardly lawbreaker lad cue navy makes a man of him

StarbucksSmarterSister · 06/10/2019 22:59

I'm really enjoying it but agree that the Polish scenes are easily the best. Tonight was tragic, even if I guessed Kasia's mother would be shot.

I've never heard of Home Fires so can't compare.

dogsdinnerlady · 07/10/2019 08:57

Kasia will have to lose the immaculate blonde bob if she's going to work for the resistance. Not sure the big battle scenes work on TV, all looks a bit stagey. Agree the gay love storyline appears tacked on, prob so it's seen as 'inclusive'.

CoolCarrie · 07/10/2019 11:59

Starbucks, you should look out for Home Fires, it’s excellent!

eddiemairswife · 07/10/2019 13:32

Kasia's lovely hair kept distracting me; it wasn't authentic WW2.
Anything with Lesley Manville in is worth watching.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 07/10/2019 16:23

I'm enjoying it, being proved right in my guessing is quite satisfying so I don't mind some predictability! Agree the Polish storyline was the strongest, although I do think Kasia was a fool for not getting on the train. That said, feeling compelled to fight and not abandoning her mum (although she was quite obviously doomed) were strong draws to stay.

I warmed more to Lois in ep2. She irritated me immensely in ep1! Blush Also, the German soldier who Gregor bribed with cigarettes. He appeared in a photo on a hall table. Was it Helen Hunts or her neighbours? Are we to assume he's her son? I'm hoping she legs it with the girl next door before Aktion-T4 gets hold of the poor child, although I suspect - same as a pp- that it's a lead to Nancy breaking the euthanasia story to the world.

Another home fires fan here- there are a few eps on itv player atm. Still annoyed that it was cancelled. And The Last Post. And The Crimson Fields. They weren't the strongest dramas but could've done a season 2 and then wrapped satisfactorily!

Wizzbangpop · 07/10/2019 18:56

Yes the soldier who Keisas brother bribed with cigarettes is the son of Helen Hunts neighbour in Berlin. Who's daughter has epilepsy.

EcocabbyRickShaw · 08/10/2019 11:36

@Davros*
Helen Hunt looks like Odo

Exactly!!!! Thank you, that's the name of the character. I couldn't remember it. Grin

Davros · 08/10/2019 13:17

You're welcome Smile I'm glad it's not just me who knows Odo!

SapatSea · 08/10/2019 13:41

Odo!!Grin spot on.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 09/10/2019 15:43

I’m really enjoying it.
It’s good to watch something about ww2 from another angle. ie: from a Polish family’s story/experience.

CoolCarrie · 13/10/2019 21:26

Those poor children in the bus.

CoolCarrie · 13/10/2019 21:28

is it horrible to be glad she didn’t let the young soldier get killed? We forget that German men were conscripted.

We1shBird · 13/10/2019 22:00

Helen Hunt now reminds me of Kryten from Red Dwarf :-/

Wizzbangpop · 13/10/2019 22:04

It's getting better as the series goes on

It certainly gets all of the emotions

Was the guy who was working with Harry in the Inbetweeners.

I hope that Helen can somehow help the little got next door

TrixieMixie · 13/10/2019 22:11

It’s all pretty cliched. Sean Bean is good. Helen Hunt looks bizarre with her mouth hanging open half the time. I too thought it was Penelope Keith then realised it couldn’t be.
