My copy arrived yesterday. I am not opening it until the weekend, when I'll be able to read it in one long indulgent session.

If I open it now I know I won't stop reading.

I have just listened to the serialisation of the Handmaid's Tale on Radio 4 extra as it is years, decades since I read the book.

From this (abridged?) reading June is virtually a totally passive person who has no agency or input into what happens to her or working with others. Until she falls in love / lust with Nick.

And others arrange her escape which she passively agrees to.

Or is this the influence of the mission impossible tv series that makes me see her like that rather than a survivor in an impossible situation?

The Testaments (abridged) is on Radio 4 at 1045 pm every night this week. It will be on radio iPlayer/Sounds thing.

I just listened to the first one - very good, I thought.

EBearhug · 17/09/2019 02:55

It's also on sometime round lunchtime, and today, iPlayer was available not long after, so you don't have to wait till bedtime.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 17/09/2019 19:29

Who's reading it?

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/09/2019 10:31

On the radio? Different actresses reading as the different main characters.

stumbledin · 18/09/2019 16:17

The Testament started Monday on radio 4 15 episodes
12:04pm or 22:45pm weekdays or on iPlayer www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0008hk0

Omnibus Sunday 15th 2:30pm on Radio 4 Extra or on iplayer www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0008pq5

Dont forget there is a thread to discuss this at www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/3689941-The-Testaments-on-Radio-4

I’ve been pondering the last episode. I’m wondering if, were Gilead to have known that there were a bunch of children on the plane after it took off, they would have shot it down. It would have been politically easier to blame a plane crash on “terrorists” than to have a load of children disappear from under their noses.

The children wouldn’t have been safe until they were in Canadian airspace. So Moira, Luke and other volunteers wouldn’t have known they were coming until shortly before they arrived - the pilot wouldn’t have risked broadcasting it over the radio.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 21/09/2019 06:42

I think they found out via the black market organisation who were bringing illegal stuff into Gilead on the same plane.
