It appeared on my kindle in the night.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 10/09/2019 07:59

I’m waiting for my confirmation email from Waterstones.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/09/2019 08:02

I've got it on my kindle. Going on holiday on Friday so I'll probably wait until then to give it my full attention.

viques · 10/09/2019 09:53

captain mycaptain I admire your self control!

My doorbell rang about half an hour ago and I raced to the door expecting Amazon . But it was the window cleaner. sigh.

I am going to go into Martha mode and do some cleaning -not bomb making- to distract myself.

Will listen to the BBC Handmaiden while I do.

Looking forward to the Atwood cinema broadcast tonight.

TeaStory · 10/09/2019 11:16

Up until yesterday Amazon were saying The Testaments would be delivered today, since this morning they’ve been saying tomorrow! Angry

Hopesorfears · 10/09/2019 12:13

Mine is 6 stops away. Annoyingly I was in Sainsbury's earlier and they had them there so could just have lifted one.

viques · 10/09/2019 12:25

Mine has arrived! My amazon email said delivery Wednesday, but the tracking said it was on its way, and it was.

I am now going to sit in my very clean kitchen (apart from the floor, which I might clean to prolong the anticipation) and read.

TeenPlusTwenties · 10/09/2019 12:26

Just bought one from WHSmiths.
About to settle down with a nice cup of tea...

Mackerz · 10/09/2019 13:41

Thanks @stumbledin. I might listen to that in the car (can’t read the Testaments while driving).

CruCru · 10/09/2019 13:54

I’m off to Waterstones for mine.

TeaStory · 10/09/2019 16:50

While out, I got a notification it had been delivered to “the mailroom”. I don’t have a mailroom at my house. Luckily it was behind the wheely bin!

Mackerz · 10/09/2019 18:09

Here you go, a thread for chapters 1 & 2 of The Testaments (as chapter 1 is only two pages long).

Be careful if you go to the Book Lovers section as there is already a Testaments Spoilers thread.

Andylion · 10/09/2019 19:18

Thank you @Mackerz.

I haven't got my copy yet, but I am in Canada anyway. You might all be alseep when mine arrives.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 10/09/2019 19:20

I'm in the cinema waiting for the live event. Ann Dowd is doing a reading.

Emmapeeler · 10/09/2019 20:10

I’m off to WHSmith or Waterstones tomorrow. Can’t wait. My mum and niece have already half finished it!

viques · 10/09/2019 22:10

Wasn't it terrific? Not only Ann Dowd reading, but Sally Hawkins and Lily Collins as the younger women.

Margaret Atwood herself was inspirational, I could have listened to her speak for hours, she is so articulate and knowledgeable :politics, literature, philosophy, history, the environment, human nature, the plight of women all discussed with erudition, humanity , humour and charm.

I want to go and live in her house and listen to her everyday. And if she won't let me do that then she is number one on my fantasy dinner party list and I might forget to invite any other guests.......

EBearhug · 11/09/2019 00:35

I went with a couple of women from work. (Basingstoke can be a bit of a cultural desert, and there weren't that many people in the cinema - 15-20, I'd guess.) Anyway, we really enjoyed it, and MA was just brilliant.

Cranmer · 11/09/2019 07:06

It was £21.50 to watch it at my cinema. I thought this was a bit steep so gave it a miss. :(

OriginofSpecies · 11/09/2019 07:57

I also went to a screening last night (only £13 at my local cinema).

I also thought it was fantastic and very thought provoking. Atwood is so intelligent and insightful, with a great sense of humour.

She mentioned a couple of organisations, one possibly relating to climate change, but I can't remember them.

I was Shock at Samira Ahmed's nephew's(?) boys school listing The Handmaid's Tale as a dystopia future where the world is run by women!

The readings were great. I love Ann Dowd's mannerisms as Aunt Lydia - the slight pulling at her cardigan and her frown.

I've got my copy of The Testaments and can't wait to start reading.

My local cinema was £15, which I thought eek! BUt then though it was like being at the NT, and a £15 seat there would be a bargain. If I had gone to the other cinema showing it the price would have been less, but I would have had to pay for parking.

And Amazon have just refunded me 3p because the price went down. YAY!!!

viques · 11/09/2019 08:34

PS had not noticed the second out stretched figure on the front cover before Samira Ahmed mentioned it, or that the back cover was another figure, observant not.

EBearhug · 11/09/2019 09:41

The event was supported by Equality Now. She also mentioned Extinction Rebellion, there might have been another.

TeenPlusTwenties · 11/09/2019 09:53

Just finished it.

BIWI · 11/09/2019 16:09

Just finished it! Wow!
