What's the craic with the "silent" ones? I wish they went into more detail!

I want more detail on a lot of things. Bizarre as it sounds, I'd like a handbook with maps of Gilead and the colonies, details about the hierarchy of commanders, more info on the econo people.

Percypigparade · 22/07/2019 17:20

I suspect there's very little craic with the silent ones!!

I had the feeling that the only reason commander Laurence helped emily is because he was worried her attack would bring his wife's problems to light so he wanted her out of the way. He was putting her in the same van June was meant to get in. The only reason he got involved with June is because she didn't get in

Shakennotshook · 22/07/2019 17:41

This week on the Handmaid's Tale: Emily visits Capita for a PIP face to face assessment.

boringlyboring · 22/07/2019 17:54

Shakennotshook 😂 Would be more action packed than the rest of the episodes

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 17:56

@Percypigparade lol good one

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 17:59

@Kenny33 I know very few people who enjoy victimising themselves, you're definitely in the top 3! Good luck hun x

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 18:00

@Kenny33

I really liked your theory about Serena Joy and I didn’t notice any spoilers. There are so many small details in every episode, it’s difficult to notice them all so I thought it was good to have someone who is paying attention drop by.

Thanks for the detail on the wife in the colonies too.

Sorry you got bullied off the thread. Nolite the Bastardes carborundum. It will go over Clarissa’s head anyway given some of her inane questions on here.

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 18:02

@clarissa469

You just can’t stop yourself can you. Kenny has apologised and said she/he made a mistake but you continue to bully her/him. Please move on.

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 18:02

@Ivy40 someone threw you a peanut? Interesting. Bye doll x

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 18:03

@Ivy40 no she keeps making comments and then claiming they're her last, unless you too are on of those who want the last word every time too? Can we crack on please

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 18:06

Can anyone remember the name of the Handmaid that had been teamed up with June? She seems so seedy

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 18:06

@Andylion

There was a map in series 2. Basically the NE US is Gilead, with some rebel areas near the Canadian border. Nuclear wastelands in California and some of the mid west. Rebel territories around Chicago, NW and Florida. The remains of the US in Alaska and Hawaii. From what I remember. I was interested too, so rewound and paused it to have a good look.

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 18:09

@clarissa469

That’s a pretty basic thing to ask. If you paid attention when you were watching you wouldn’t need to ask these things. What do you think you are actually adding to the conversation?

historysock · 22/07/2019 18:13

I wish something would actually happen to push the plot on now... it's getting less realtors by the episode. I still want to like it but it's becoming absurd.

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 18:18

@Ivy40 sorry mum!

Andylion · 22/07/2019 18:28

@Ivy40, thanks. I did some googling. I found that map and several others. I'm at work or else I'd fall down that rabbit hole.

beanaseireann · 22/07/2019 18:36

Where are the Colonies supposed to be ?

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 19:00

@Andylion
Easy rabbit hole to fall down.

When I get home I’ll post what I’ve gleaned about the different classes. Still got loads of questions though as they haven’t done loads on it. Yet.

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 19:33

@beanaseireann

There are two colonies.

One is in the nuclear wasteland, where unwomen are sent to clear nuclear waste until they die.

The second are agricultural colonies, where people who don’t fit into the rest of Gilead’s social classes are sent to work.

Soubriquet · 22/07/2019 19:42

I’ve just watched it now as I recorded it and I do think they are dragging the story out now

Like pp have said, June would never have been allowed to wander around a child’s school, with guardians every 10 steps watching...

And then attacking the other handmaid...you could see the guardians yet not one of them stepped in?

Surely anyone else would have lost their tongue for that sort of language but because she’s a main character, she gets away with it?

No!

LizzieMacQueen · 22/07/2019 20:36

Don't know if this was covered in a previous thread but could June be pregnant? She had a 'closed door' moment with Nick a couple of episodes back.

CurbsideProphet · 22/07/2019 22:15

I go too far into the rabbit hole and start wondering what's happening in the west like Washington State, as it's so far away from Washington / New York / Boston. How many men and women must have been groomed and recruited to take over such a huge expanse of land?

Ivy40 · 22/07/2019 22:27

@curbsideprophet

I too am looking forward to The Testaments coming out. I saw an interview with MA and she said it’s set 15 years after the end of the book. There are four narrators, none of whom are June. She also said when she had the original idea, she based it loosely on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. I’m hoping for a “Martha’s Tale”, “Wife’s Tale”, “Unwoman’s Tale” etc.

Note - this isn’t a spoiler, it relates to the sequel that MA is bringing out in September.
