@wetwiped Yes please. Swiftly

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/07/2019 12:11

'I'm surprised more of them aren't slightly bonkers.'

Me too. Specially the silent ones in DC.

clarissa469 · 22/07/2019 12:14

What's the craic with the "silent" ones? I wish they went into more detail! I might sound daft but was it a "choice" or is it a form of punishment?

Kenny33 · 22/07/2019 12:19

@wetwiped

Thank you.

I’ll stick to discussing THT with the lovely women at my book club. We enjoy linking it to the epilogue. The book finished with series 1 so the tv programme writers have a lot of creative license with series 2,3 etc and we have loads of wild theories as to what they are doing now and how it links to the epilogue. This thread isn’t the place for that.

Kenny33 · 22/07/2019 12:21

@CurbsideProphet

I agree, I think it’s beautiful and I’m enjoying the slow build up to whatever is coming next (I have my theories but I won’t post them here as they link to the original book).

Also have my copy of The Testaments on pre-order.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 22/07/2019 12:25

You could start your own thread for that discussion @Kenny33 as there are a few THT threads on Mumsnet including one with spoilers and one at US pace.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/07/2019 12:25

More has been explained about the silent ones in an interview with Bruce Miller but I won't quote him because of the spoiler thing (though actually I am not clear if it is information that is going to be part of a forthcoming episode or just something in his head).

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 22/07/2019 12:26

Could you PM me @TheCountessofFitzdotterel as I'd love to know more on that?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/07/2019 12:32

It's in this link. (Article is safe, no other spoilers.)

Kenny33 · 22/07/2019 12:35

But don’t click on the 1st and 3rd links at the bottom of the article, as they contain spoilers.

Kenny33 · 22/07/2019 12:49

@BrienneofTarthILoveYou

Thanks, but I’m not looking for spoilers. I’m enjoying the slow build up in this series and don’t want to actually KNOW what happens. I’m a massive Atwood fan and I live trying to work out how the tv programme writers are going to link it all to the epilogue. I’ll stick to talking with my fellow Atwood geeks at book club, don’t want to risk disturbing another nest of vipers in mumsnet!

I’m off now (@clarissa469 told me to go away and other posters have made it clear that I’m not welcome). Hope you (well the pleasant posters anyway) enjoy the rest of the series.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 22/07/2019 12:55

Dont quote the spoiler post, people!!

Percypigparade · 22/07/2019 13:57

So, just wondering again if anyone picked up what June said towards Lydia at the end when the hanging was on? She said either one or two words very intensely but I could not hear them. Thanks!

MargoLovebutter · 22/07/2019 14:10

I had subtitles on and I can't recall anything that was particularly significant Percypigparade - sorry.

Percypigparade · 22/07/2019 14:12

No problem, I'm just being lazy! I rewound it but couldn't hear and not sure how our subtitles work..

BesselVanDerKolk · 22/07/2019 14:15

I'm pretty sure she said "by his hand"

EmpressLesbianInChair · 22/07/2019 14:21

I'm pretty sure she said "by his hand"

I thought it was that too.

I think Emily and Moira might end up in a couple as there's too much of a gulf between Emily and her wife but Moira knows what she's been through!

I don't know if it would last but I can definitely imagine them getting together! When Emily whispered "Yes" to the question about things Gilead would consider crimes, I was thinking of her affair with the Martha.

Roussette · 22/07/2019 15:14

Just for info... subtitles only work when it's being broadcast there and then. They deffo don't work on any catch up as I found out to my cost!

ptumbi · 22/07/2019 16:04

That dance scene! I was amazed that they all clapped - I thought they'd be ostracised for doing the Tango (Sex with your clothes on? Grin) And the 'wives'are def in Blue, not green.

And yes I don't understand why June wasn't on the scaffold. If her 'companion' saved her, it was by killing the Martha. But I don't think anyone knows that the companion Handmaid is pregnant, do they?

I am also waiting for the saved Marthas from the colonies prison. When are they getting to C Lawrences house and what will they do?

I wondered about the interview with Emily - she has done some criminal things - killed a Wife in the colonies, stabbed her 'supervisor' (Torturer! I shouted at the TV) and stole the baby. They may well want to send her back or try her for justice - If Aunt Lydia turned up in Canada we'd expect her to face justice for her crimes in Gilead. Both are doing what they believe to be right, to survive.

Spam88 · 22/07/2019 16:12

@ptumbi I assume the pregnancy is known about now - she mentioned having seen the doctor.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 22/07/2019 16:41

She's hiding the fact the pregnancy doesn't feel right, not the fact she's pregnant. A Handmsid wouldn't be able to hide being pregnant. In series 1 their underwear got inspected.

Am really worried about Emily. I think Canada might send her back.

Littlebelina · 22/07/2019 16:46

Hi, new to threads but have been lurking.

I wonder if June's survival is partly due to the Waterfords perhaps needing her for more propaganda or incase the Swiss want to speak to her again. Wouldn't do for her to be suddenly unavailable or turn up with one eye if Gilead is trying to push the handmaids are all willingly giving up the babies (which I guess they still are given the Canadian minister's comment). If that is the case you think they could have Aunt Lydia hiss it at her, at the moment she seems to getting away with too much.

I find it difficult to believe Canada would extradite Emily or send Nichole back but then the storytelling around Canada has been very inconsistent. It swings between declaring they won't deal with Gilead after the letters and helping the refugees back to "yes we might send this child back to people who aren't her parents despite being told twice by her birth mother that she wants her to stay in Canada" and "maybe we will extradite the wife of one of our citizens back to a country where she'll be executed without a fair trial for crimes she committed after being raped and tortured". I'm finding this more difficult to suspend belief for than the June stuff

Andylion · 22/07/2019 16:49

Anyone else noticed that the Washington families all seem to have multiple kids? When serena went for the house 'viewing' confused the next door neighbours had two kids jumping with dad and mum holding a baby.

I assumed that was a status thing, the most powerful Cammander's being given the most children and the most fertile handmaids.

I also assume that they allow themselves to enjoy music because many of them would be great fucking hypocrites.

Knittedjimmychoos · 22/07/2019 16:50

Different of course but he has still been kind to Emily, he gives his staff freedom!
June could be with a ring in her mouth in strict household.

Don't you think she has it easier with Lawrence? No rape for a start!
Due to Mrs l, she doesn't even have a Serena type bitch lording over her so yes I think she could have done much much worse and her day to day life could be even worse than Waterford

boringlyboring · 22/07/2019 17:10

I was really hoping for a ‘penny drops’ moment this season that shows why Lawrence doesn’t abide by the rules he created, why he helped Emily and June, and the episodes would be a bit more active. When he was introduced, he had a kind of comical villain thing about him but now he is just a filler, like the rest of the characters (whose storylines imo are much more interesting than June being goady)

Nevertheless, I will continue to watch in the hope that something happens
