The Circle would return for a second series, featuring a weekly live episode.[8][9] Emma Willis was announced as the new presenter on 4 June.[10]

woop sounds like Big Brother

unique1986 · 19/06/2019 15:05

No idea when.

Zampa · 19/06/2019 15:07

What is Dog whistle racism please?

It's a silent signpost in a statement or comment that encourages a certain way of thinking, in this case racism.

So if an OP asked in AIBU about an unruly neighbour's behaviour and stated that they were of Asian origin, it's encouraging a certain response (from some posters) that's likely to be founded on the OP's comment about race. Those comments may be racist on a conscious or unconscious way.

Hope that makes sense. Far too serious for this thread!

RozHuntleysStump · 19/06/2019 15:10

That’s interesting. Not heard the term before.

Phoningliz · 19/06/2019 15:17

What is Dog whistle racism please?

It's coded language so that the true message will only be understood by some of audience, but look innocent enough to those not sensitive to it. Trump is great at it.

For example, "they'll be picking out their caravan" might just read like a funny comment about a couple going away together and taking a cheap holiday, ha ha.
To others, it's a comment that emphasises one's Irish Traveller heritage and the other's Irish background and signals a focus based on a negative stereotyping of Travellers.

It's subtle, so easy for the original messenger to claim, "I don't know what you mean, I was just joking about caravans. You're the racist!".

Bellendejour · 19/06/2019 15:18

Dog whistle racism is non overt racism - coded stuff that people pick up because they are racist (so a sort of racist code) or that communicates a racist message semi subconsciously, so really insidious and pervasive. Basically what the Daily Fail does on a daily basis (though they often don’t bother to be particularly covert!) It’s racism in sheep’s clothing, so it could be defended as being innocent but really is not. If that makes any sense... that’s how I understand it anyway.

I agree that social media makes these shows impossible now - I do think people got worked up about BB baddies, but beyond going down to the eviction and booing, there wasn’t really any way to share that hate. Now it’ll be all over their feeds, inboxes and trending on twitter. Plus I think people see other people bitching/hating and that gets them even more riled up, kind of mob justice style. It’s telling that practically every LI article features numerous twitter grabs of people hating on whoever.

It’s just a shame people can’t just have a wee chat about it and the issues/dilemmas etc it throws up (eg like we’re doing) rather than sending death threats!

Sagradafamiliar · 19/06/2019 15:20

I could give examples but I'm not actively trying to derail the thread. I stated that Yewande has had flack and that I like her and in return I've been called argumentative and 'not ok' the thread is supposed to be chat about the contestants but I'm somehow offensive for saying something positive about one and not sticking to the narrative. Wasn't too long ago no one could believe anyone was interested in her and that it was her who fancied Danny, not the other way round. But now she's had her weave relaxed, she's much more attractive and people can see how beautiful she is now. Although she still shouldn't be on the show apparently. Personally I hope things develop with Danny but if the feelings aren't there then they can't be forced.
Really hope they send someone in who Maura can meet her match with, the new guy isn't arsed and he doesn't have enough about him for her to chase after.

Phoningliz · 19/06/2019 15:23

Some mentioned on the last thread that Amber's manager had exposed some of the hateful private messages sent to her account. Does anyone have a link to it? (The report, not the messages, I'm interested in how it's being followed up).

ClubSandwich · 19/06/2019 15:34

@Phoningliz (sorry tag feature doesn’t seem to be working so not sure if it will tag you) but the guy managing her social media has shared a link on his personal profile of an interview he did exposing said messages. Here’s the link metro.co.uk/2019/06/17/love-islands-amber-gill-received-a-barrage-of-death-threats-as-friend-exposes-messages-and-talks-itvs-aftercare-9989129/

FieldsOfWheat · 19/06/2019 15:40

This whole Twitter abuse thing is reminding me of that Black Mirror episode with the bees....

kenandbarbie · 19/06/2019 15:42

Marking for tonight.

Also, I love Maura. I hope someone fancies her!!

BenWillbondsPants · 19/06/2019 15:47

I also don't think that Tom is into Maura. I don't really like him at all - him discussing his 'options' was like deciding if he was going to have a cappuccino or a latte.

carmenbea · 19/06/2019 15:50

Tom comes across very superficial he probably has a 100 page checklist of a girls must haves to date him. Petite, athletic, brunette...

Elmo311 · 19/06/2019 15:58

Does anyone else think Curtis is gay?! I hope not as I think Amy really likes him!

Elmo311 · 19/06/2019 16:00

I also think Yewande isn't that into Danny. Did you see last night he went in for a kiss when they'd been saved from elimination and she gave him a hug and her cheek instead! I'm warming to her, think she needs more time.

Sagradafamiliar · 19/06/2019 16:02

Ikr, who does Tom think he is talking about his options? Hopefully more of his personality will come out as his look is quite basic

FieldsOfWheat · 19/06/2019 16:03

I'm pretty sure every single contestant has spoken about options/keeping options open - remember Molly-Mae for the entire first week

carmenbea · 19/06/2019 16:07

Tom came across like he could have anyone he wanted 😬 and that Elma would be automatically interested in him

ReturnofSaturn · 19/06/2019 16:10

Elmo, I'm not convinced Amy is that into Curtis either to be honest. Think it's all part of the game they're playing.

tessiegirl · 19/06/2019 16:12

Absolutely disgusting that people have been sending death threats to Amy's family. Get a bloody grip.
The problem with racism is that almost anything can be interpreted in that way...which is quite worrying...

I like Amy.

We had better stop the speculation about Curtis sexuality as could be seen as homophobic...Hmm

Also agree Tom is not into Maura...she thinks she is all that and is probably on shock nobody fancies her yet...

Tennesseewhiskey · 19/06/2019 16:15

Sagradafamiliar you were not called argumentative for liking Yewande, were you?

Wasnt it more because you accused people of blasting her. Or another similar word?

But now she's had her weave relaxed, she's much more attractive and people can see how beautiful she is now.

There been talk about all their hair, weave extensions etc and wether people liked it certain styles. Lots of talk about Joe and his hair. Though I do get there are issues around black women and wearing their hair natural, being judged. However, the weave she had before wasnt 'natural' either. Some People simply prefer this fake hair more than the last lot of fake hair. There have been lots of discussions about lucies extensions and Anna's. Not all complimentary at all.

Although she still shouldn't be on the show apparently.

Because of her revered personality and job. She doesnt look comfortable at all. Not because of her race and other people said why she went is entirely her choice. People said the same things about Alex last year. He didnt seem to click with anyone and as soon as someone liked him, he decided he didnt. All talked about in these threads last year.

She did seem to really like Danny. But now she doesnt. He seems too full on for her.

That's not dog whistle racisim. That's people talking about the people personalities and looks on the show. Which we are doing about all of them.

Proteinshakesandtears · 19/06/2019 16:19

I think saying

'I am keeping my options open' is very different from

'I have 2 options of who I can go with'

The first is about the person saying it. They wont commit.

The other implies the person saying it can have either and that either person will definitely want him.

It will be the girls recoupling next. Wonder what will happen if Maura is last and someone else picks Tom.

Personally, I would love to see Danny and Yewande work. I think see likes him but is struggling with how much he likes her, if you get what I mean.

nickymanchester · 19/06/2019 16:21

According to the Metro it looks like Lucie is staying:-

Love Island’s Lucie Donlan told Joe Garratt had doubts about romance as she decides to stay in the villa

Phoningliz · 19/06/2019 16:21

Thanks @ClubSandwich I think that’s a great response from her friend.

Sagradafamiliar · 19/06/2019 16:23

Tom was talking about Elma and Maura like they were options, he comes across arrogant. I don't think he's that fussed about anyone tbh
