And yes, it tooks aaaaaaages to load.

We've discussed the Ceefax quiz before , haven't we ? And the teletext soap? i was addictedGrin

Think it was based on Brookside .

kazzaD66 · 11/06/2019 20:27

Yes, I'm on my phone aswell.

I used to spend what seemed like hours scrolling through the pages of results on ceefax, then just as you got to page 19 out of 21, a new result came through which sent it all the way back to page 1 again GrinTennis

Raahh · 11/06/2019 20:27

Park Avenue!

it was called Park Avenue!

(I think)

Raahh · 11/06/2019 20:30

Oh, kazza I'm on my laptop now so it's not happening.

But, something is going on MN towers, what with the ads, and the photo blip .

There have been a lot of of problems lately.

PrivateIsles · 11/06/2019 20:44

Grin imagine how many hours we must have spent waiting for Ceefax page X of X to roll round again!! Eee, kids these days don't know they're born!!

I do remember the soap Raahh - it was good entertainment back then.

Do you remember Glug's Jokes?! Grin That might have been Teletext though.

OP posts:
Raahh · 11/06/2019 20:48

It was so annoying when you missed the page you needed, and had to wait

PrivateIsles · 11/06/2019 20:52

Probably nowadays kids would just walk away, but back then we probably had nothing else to do!

Apart from making Boris Becker scrapbooks that is.

Speaking for myself of course Grin

Grin

so true!

kazzaD66 · 11/06/2019 21:07

I used to write in the results every day, either in the Wimbledon programme, if I'd been lucky enough to go, or the draw pullout section of the newspaper. Usually had to do it from the results section of the newspaper the following day. No use trying to do it from ceefax because it used to scroll to the next page when you were still recording the third result from the previous page (before the HOLD function) Hmm

Clearly had far too much time on my hands back then Grin

kazzaD66 · 11/06/2019 21:37

Just seen on the BBC website that Thiem has offered to play mixed doubles with Serena, either at Wimbledon or the US Open, to get over any bad feeling arising from the press conference debacle last week! Is his girlfriend ok with this? She might have been expecting to be asked first HmmGrin

Adelie0404 · 11/06/2019 22:09

Well I couldn’t delete my RG app - you ladies were making me insufficiently dedicated. I’ve put in in “Health” on my phone - something has to go in there.....
I went to Wimbledon a few times the first Monday with my school. I saw Edberg who was my special favourites. I liked the swedes. Didn’t see any inspiring tennis as I recall. DH is half Swedish but not, sadly, a tennis player.

kazzaD66 · 12/06/2019 07:42

Adelie the lovely Stefan was a favourite with a few of us on here Grin
As you say the Swedes in general were a good bunch - Wilander, Nystrom, Pernfors, Jarryd. Borg has a lot to answer for Grin

Raahh · 12/06/2019 08:29

Oh yes Stefan. Grin

Should have been Mr Raahh. Grin

One of the handful of players to defeat another in a grand slam-with a triple bagel. 6-0 6-0 6-0.

Can't remember who is was against- may have been another Swede. I need to go out now but will check later.

PrivateIsles · 12/06/2019 08:42

Grin I was wondering how long it would take before Raahh and kazza replied about Stefan! Love it. He was great.

What happened to the Swedes though? Are there any around at the mo - the Ymer brothers? I can't think of anyone else...

Tomas Enqvist was one of my favourites back in the day as well. He was rather fetchingly making up part of the Team Europe bench at the Laver Cup, iirc.

Adelie0404 · 12/06/2019 14:53

Every Wimbledon I’d look at the order of play and think “ooh, a new Swede, hope we get to see his match”.
And remember the disappointment when you didn’t get to see a match you wanted to?
Can’t be having that anymore...

kazzaD66 · 12/06/2019 17:48

I see the Nottingham tournaments have been rained off today and they've had to go to different indoor venues, neither of which have viewing facilities apparently, just to try to get some play! It must be very hard for these tournaments in situations like this, you have to feel for them. Plus, the players aren't getting the grass court practice either!

PrivateIsles · 12/06/2019 19:34

kazza yes I saw that about Nottingham - what a bugger. I saw a tweet from someone's coach (can't remember who) saying in the last week they'd played on clay, practised on grass, then moved indoors - a bit tricky you'd have to think.

I see Andy Murray has said he wants to try returning to singles this year but isn't putting a deadline on himself as he's just enjoying making progress etc. Hopefully the media will take that on board and not keep harping on about when he's going to return! (Wishful thinking)

OP posts:
PrivateIsles · 12/06/2019 19:36

PS it's still raining here, and the forecast for the rest of the week is the same! Hope it picks up for Queens Sad

OP posts:
Raahh · 12/06/2019 21:07

Private it is wishful thinking.

They will miss 99% of what he is saying and see 'return'.

Personally (shoot me) I'm not fussed if he doesn't. I've had a gut full of the whole Federer is the King of Clay agenda that the atp has pushed so far. If Murray come a back...well everyone else at Wimbledon might as well not turn up.

Sorry. It's been a bad day. Grin

PrivateIsles · 12/06/2019 22:12

Raahh yes that's true, and I really like Andy, but I hate it when there's just a focus on one player and no-one else gets mentioned. It's really annoying.

Meanwhile did you see the video of Rafa and David Ferrer giving out the graduation certificates at Rafa's academy?! I think Rafa made a speech as well. Apols if this has already been mentioned on the thread, I'm losing track of everything at the mo Hmm

OP posts:
Raahh · 13/06/2019 06:30

Private I saw the graduation pictures.

David is lovely man. I wouldn't what He will do now? It's funny, I've barely seen him play in the past couple of years- I've seen I'm do loads of stuff since he's 'retired' Grin.

I don't mind Murray- away from the court. But I like to be able to watch a tournament where it's not all about one person.

Eastbourne was a classic example. The broadcast was supposed to be focussing on the women.
It's not his fault. I think he finds it just as rubbish.

Raahh · 13/06/2019 06:31
  • wonder what

Stupid phone

PrivateIsles · 13/06/2019 07:53

Yes he probably does find it annoying Raahh

I wonder if such a fuss would be made of Jo Konta if she won Wimbledon? It not beyond the realms that she could either.

Lol about David - increasing his profile since retiring - love it! Isn't he already playing on the Champions Tour as well?! Maybe he'll play in the Legends doubles at Wimbledon?!
