Starts tonight 9pm
Family drama that flashes forward into the future.

I don’t think it is just by chance that the younger sister is a wheelchair user. I am quite worried about what might happen to her next in RTD’s dystopian future.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 08/06/2019 09:39

No-one else in the family knows that Edith was involved ColouringPencils but I expect she will blame herself. I didn't notice her eye!

Was not expecting to like this as much as I am. It's brilliant.

Firefliess · 08/06/2019 10:00

timeandtune There would be a real irony wouldn't there if Viv and her party was to turn against disabled people when Rosie was the one voting for her.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 08/06/2019 10:47

Hmm ... Enforced treatment, enforced segregated housing or enforced euthanasia?

All have been in the news one way or another lately, and both fetal surgery for spina bifida and means tested housing have been rather specifically referred to in earlier episodes ...

Actually - so has transhumanism - which is related to euthanasia. Perhaps Rosie will be forcibly uploaded to the cloud? (Though that was Moffat not RTD.) It would be another instance of making the audience look in the wrong direction, given Bethany’s obsession with this.

It would be great if she could be just a person (who uses a wheelchair) in the show, but it is likely they’ll use everything for something.

Why? The actor who plays Rosie has spina bifida. I hope she can get parts despite her disability, not because of it.

Timeandtune · 08/06/2019 12:25

I didn’t mean that. I meant that totalitarian regimes have a history of scapegoating disabled people and others. Prewar Germany had a policy of forced euthanasia. Disabled people were considered a drain on society and literally second class citizens. I just wondered if that is where RTD is going next.

MauisHouseOnMaui · 08/06/2019 14:23

The BBC episode synopsis for episode five says that Rosie finds herself trapped in the system.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 08/06/2019 14:37

Of course - it was RTD who re-introduced the Cybermen.

Just sayin’ ...

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 08/06/2019 14:41

Oh yeah Rosie is definitely in trouble

MauisHouseOnMaui · 08/06/2019 14:43

Wonder what Universal Credit and PIP will look like after ten years of mutation...

SapphireBattersea · 08/06/2019 14:49

@MauisHouseOnMaui I honestly dread to think seeing as it's already draconian . 😥😥

JasperTheFriendlyGhost · 08/06/2019 17:17

@TheFirstOHN haven’t RTFT so don’t know if you’ve found it but the music that’s on the news montages is here

TheFirstOHN · 08/06/2019 17:47

Thank you Jasper

Mysleepthiefslept · 09/06/2019 15:12

I haven't been able to stop thinking about Daniel, it was so harrowing I cant believe how much it has affected me Sad

GeorgeTheBleeder · 09/06/2019 15:31

I’m trying The Virtues as a cure. Great emotional punch - but it lacks the comedy or parody or stealth of Years.

BIWI · 09/06/2019 16:19

That was a harrowing watch, wasn't it?! I hoped against hope there would be a happy ending, knowing all the time that there wouldn't be Sad

I thought Stephen Graham was fantastic

GeorgeTheBleeder · 09/06/2019 17:11

I’m only halfway through ep 3! Was wrong about there being no comedy - have just laughed myself silly.

Am hoping there won’t be a very obvious revelation.

Yes, he and the MotherFatherSon actress are wonderful. As is the woman playing his sister.

BIWI · 09/06/2019 18:06

Shit - sorry! Didn't mean to do a spoiler! But keep watching - it's intense but absolutely gripping.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 09/06/2019 22:19

No worries BIWI - I wasn’t expecting anything else. Finished now!

Bit melodramatic at the end. Shock

BIWI · 09/06/2019 23:04

Apparently they re-shot the ending. Not quite sure what it had been been originally, but the scene between the mother and the daughter.

Ratatouille76 · 09/06/2019 23:31

I have just caught up. No words. So so upsetting.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 11/06/2019 00:16

On the other hand ... Even if no one steps out of the shower, and it wasn’t all a dream - there’s always reincarnation.

Because really, why take a show’s most appealing character and dead them? (I know this is a useless argument given RTD’s record!) Added to the fact that there ought to be a reason why the story is about this particular family - what makes them special? And, again, there’s been so much content that might be deliberate misdirection; Bethany’s transhumanist thing, Stephen’s medical trials. Probably other things I don’t remember. It’s entirely possible that by the final episode there might be a way to bring back the deceased.

I freely admit that, even days later, a future without Daniel in it still looks pretty bleak. Certain amount of straw clutching may be occurring.

donutrehomer · 11/06/2019 05:43

I wasted a very rainy day off binge watching eps one to four. What an amazing series, literally cried buckets at the end of ep four.

Brilliant cast, I'm really emotionally involved with them all.

BIWI · 11/06/2019 08:37

@GeorgeTheBleeder

Because really, why take a show’s most appealing character and dead them?

Because isn't this part of the message of the show? That the choices we're making now will impact on us all, and there aren't going to be (many) happy endings - despite technological advances. It's noticeable that the only widely used technology that we see regularly is the communication device that keeps the family in touch with each other. Bethany's implanted 'phone' is the only other obvious advance, and even that is dubious in terms of what it means and where it might lead to for her

donutrehomer · 11/06/2019 08:54

The only gripe ive got, if i really had to nitpick is the cars. Because it's set in the future, as the years went on the cars they are driving would be Old, not the shiny new models they are driving. It would make more sense if they had been made to look old and worn.

Or am I missing part of the plotline ??
