Dr Who for grown ups!!

Optimist1 · 14/05/2019 22:54

It's not often that I know who all the characters are when there's such a large cast - a great achievement on their part.

Curlyshabtree · 14/05/2019 22:58

Wow. This was great TV, was 100% glued to the screen.

CoolCarrie · 14/05/2019 23:00

Was the síster who had the two wee boys always in a wheelchair? We only saw her sitting in the car going to hospital in labour, and then in bed.

DameSquashalot · 14/05/2019 23:01

I caught the end. It looked interesting/strange. I tried to download to watch on my commute, but it's not available at the mo.

Defenbaker · 14/05/2019 23:21

Scary stuff, especially as they wove current news events into it, making it seem very plausible.
The trans human thing seemed a bit far fetched... did that girl really think that she could continue to exist in the form of electronic data, without her body? Surely medical science would never advance to the point where a person's consciousness could just be downloaded to a computer?
The sirens going off in the UK also seemed a bit unlikely... was that meant to be the 4 minute warning they used to refer to, back in the 80s? Most people don't have nuclear proof bunkers nearby, so I doubt the warning would be much use. The sirens were probably just for dramatic effect - which worked.
This series is going to push some people into prepper mode, as it pushes all the fear buttons relating to the turn things are taking. Very curious to see where they will take things next.

Yubaba · 14/05/2019 23:58

The guy with the (sex) robot used to be in here’say!

GrimDamnFanjo · 15/05/2019 00:25

I kept expecting it to turn into Threads . Bloody terrifying.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 15/05/2019 01:07

Yes - that's exactly what it reminded me of - Threads for my daughter's generation. I still remember watching that when I was 13.
I have just caught up having been happily watching Eurovision earlier.
Bloody good stuff - absolutely riveting.
BOF yep, terrified! It was the music that did for me!
Carrie she has spina bifida, I wikied it. I thought that was cleverly written actually, it wasn't referred to with regard to her dating or her parenting. Just a strong and capable single mum.

I assume the Viv Rook character is meant to be a Katie Hopkins becoming a politician.

The Doris Day insert was clever - they must have decided to incorporate whatever yesterday's bulletin was, either late last night or this morning into the edit.

What with the flat earthers and the transhumanism, I figured MN would be having a field day. I do give Russell T Davies credit, he is damned good at zeitgeisty stuff.

EnidButton · 15/05/2019 01:17

The subtitles for the Doris Day radio news didn't match the voiceover so presumably it was a very last minute add in. None of the news stories in the radio broadcast were the same as subtitles actually.

The actor Ruth Madeley has spina bifida in real life and uses a wheel chair. I assumed the character was already a wheelchair user as an illness or accident wasn't shown as a major life event during the montage flash forward bit. I looked her up as she was my favourite in this.

It felt very Russell T Davies which isn't a bad thing but I imagine it'd leave some viewers a bit confused. I quite liked it. The music was really Doctor Who!

EnidButton · 15/05/2019 01:17

Sorry Rage Missed you'd already said about Ruth M.

EnidButton · 15/05/2019 01:20

Ah the music was by Murray Gold! That explains it. Grin

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 15/05/2019 01:25

That's okay - as I didn't know the actress had spina bifida in real life. I liked all the cast in this.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 15/05/2019 01:26

Murray Gold is the reason I now can't sleep Grin

HelenaDove · 15/05/2019 01:49

This sounds intriguing.

HelenaDove · 15/05/2019 01:54

I watched this over Easter and some of it DID come to pass. Just one example..............the first episode contained a disability benefits assessment of the kind we are now used to hearing about..............

It was weird. Not sure I was as gripped as you lot. Persevered because of the cast.

Whenwillthewashingend · 15/05/2019 07:17

I thought it was Murray Gold. I was going to google after the programme, but my heart was racing so much. I forgot.
Can't wait for next week.

grumpyyetgorgeous · 15/05/2019 07:25

I found myself watching this by default (tv stayed in after Holly city) and was absolutely gripped. The end bit I thought was extremely well acted and realistic..... I couldn't breathe. Shock

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/05/2019 08:20

Really enjoyed it, great acting all around and Emma T was having a ball playing a character embodying everything she's opposed to in real life.

And was there ever anything so British as Anne Reid's character making everyone a naice cuppa tea in the immediate aftermath of a nuclear attack?

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/05/2019 08:31

I used to be worried sick about a nuclear war in the 80's and this brought it all back to me.
Me too. The film Threads had me terrified for ages and this came quite close to that.

I don't think the Transhuman thing was presented as a real possibility, just something a teenager had latched on to - all part of the Fake News on the internet type rubbish.

I liked it that the sister who used the wheelchair was not presented as a tragic character - just 'getting on with life.

teta · 15/05/2019 10:38

I loved this but missed the last bit due to a phone call. I just thought it was so clever. But the cartoon filter on the teenager really scared me. The trans reaction was both scary and amusing.

lurkingfromhome · 15/05/2019 10:49

So clever, so brilliant, so zeitgeisty. I thought it was utterly believable - so many things that aren't quite reality yet but easily could be in the next 5 years (the cartoon filter). And how insightful to make Trump do that as a parting shot at the end of his presidency - exactly the kind of thing he would do. Amazing cast clearly having a ball with the material.

Loved Anne Reid's cup of tea!

CoolCarrie · 15/05/2019 12:06

Thanks for the info re Ruth Madeley.

Susiesoap7 · 15/05/2019 13:48

Loved it, I want an emoji face
