Starts tonight 9pm
Family drama that flashes forward into the future.

OP posts:

It was a really harrowing episode, made more so because this really happens. Smugglers are total bastards and people are robbed of life savings and die.
I know this from a personal level. It was an accurate portrayal.

Asta19 · 05/06/2019 13:46

I found it really sad, but..there was no need for Daniel to be on that boat. I understand that he loved Viktor and wanted to be with him but why pay 6000 Euros for the two of them to be on that boat when there was just no need? He could have seen Viktor off on the boat and arranged a meeting place, and him travel home normally. I know he didn't have his passport but it would have been easily sorted. Of course that wouldn't have fitted in with the story! I'm probably just unromantic but there's no way I would have done that.

Yes I can't watch Handmaid's Tale. I couldn't cope with the scenes of mothers being separated from their babies. I'm not a particularly sentimental person but I just find things like that unbearable, things that do happen every day to other people.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 14:07

I agree @Asta19, he could've shown up at the British embassy and explained he'd lost his passport. Surely he could've been issued with a new one and as for money, I'm sure Gran could've been telephoned. Also, was there a reason Viktor couldn't seek asylum in France?

On another note, I've got to admire Rory Kinnear's commitment to the role - shaving his hair into an unflattering bald spot and stacking on some weight. Especially when his character now spends most of his time in Lycra cycling shorts!

CoolCarrie · 05/06/2019 14:13

God, that was awful, chilling, poor Danny! I said to dh one of them is not going to make it, and hoped I was wrong. I was in tears and then on the news there was a report about some bastards who have thankfully been jailed for selling these inflatables and exploiting desperate people.
This has been an excellent series, and Russell Tovey was especially great.

peachgreen · 05/06/2019 14:17

@Queen They explained in an earlier episode that France now had a zero-tolerance policy for migrants or something similar.

Isn't that just what Rory Kinnear looks like?

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 14:18

No, Steven (or is it Stephen?) definitely had more hair in earlier episodes!

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 14:21

I saw Russell T at my gym once. Never could understand why the gay men I worked with all fancied him but apparently the ears gave you something to hold on to Grin

Was the political situation in France really shaky as a knock-on effect from the upheaval in neighbouring countries? Showing up and saying he lost his passport would have probably left him at risk of scrutiny or being unnecessarily detained, plus they crossed the border from Spain into France illegally. Then the added dimension of wanting to stick together to keep each other safe, would you let someone you loved go alone?

You have a beautiful mind mauis but how would he have found the shoes?

They were in the bottom of the boat, he chucked them in when he took them off. In my head, Viktor found them floating in the water as he reached the shore and grabbed them because he knew Daniel would want them and it would be funny to hand them over. Then after he found Daniel (and turned him over so he could see the sun instead of lying face down in the sand) he put the shoes on him to keep his feet dry and because it's 'proper' to wear shoes.

MauisHouseOnMaui · 05/06/2019 14:26

Accidentally bolded the wrong bit Blush

It’s interesting that RTD has called the family Lyons as there was a 1960s radio and TV sitcom called Life With The Lyons and it’s a play on Lions as well.

historysock · 05/06/2019 14:35

Just watched.
Im sobbing.

Cloudtree · 05/06/2019 14:36

OMG. It was fantastic.

Viktor was saying "I don't know"

This programme does however make me worried for the future of the country/world.

TheFirstOHN · 05/06/2019 15:40

I don't think it is pathetic to be deeply moved by this. Although it is fictional, it covers very emotive subjects that are relevant to real people in the world right now. I started getting upset as soon as I realised they had oversold the spaces on the dingy, and I felt quite shaken after the episode finished.

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 15:40

Omg the latest episodeShock

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 15:42

It was SO well filmed on the boat, could've been shut but it was done so well.

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 15:43

**shit!!

SkintAsASkintThing · 05/06/2019 16:20

Genuinely cried watching this. I honestly don't think we're far away from this being our reality. We're halfway there already.

Andonandonan · 05/06/2019 17:15

They weren’t Daniel’s shoes - his were a different colour. They were Viktor’s.

MauisHouseOnMaui · 05/06/2019 17:18

So he really did put shoes on him to keep his feet warm...

scullie · 05/06/2019 17:58

Devastatingly powerful, it's not often I'm so moved and shocked. Bravo to all concerned.
However big crisp comment has made me chuckle all day.

SummerHouse · 05/06/2019 18:01

Oh my. The shoes were Viktor's.

I did think they made a strange show about him taking the shoes off. And it seemed too relevant for it to be forgotten in the later scene.

daisyboocantoo · 05/06/2019 18:56

I have thought about it all day too. DD (9) is currently reading Boy at the back of the class and after school, came to the section when the main character was talking about losing his sister on a boat, and his parents on his journey. We had a lot of tears as we discussed what some people have to go through.

To then watch this episode a few hours later has really stuck with me. Just awful. I woke up thinking about it and it's been on my mind all day.

I feel so helpless.

AnyFucker · 05/06/2019 19:02

.

BIWI · 05/06/2019 19:10

If they were Viktor's shoes though, that makes his so-easy departure even more confusing! How could he have got away without any shoes on?!
