Viktor was saying я не знаю (ya nye zhnayu) which does indeed mean 'I don't know'

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 05/06/2019 05:21

Tonight's episode stayed with me.
Here is an excellent interview with RTD
It gives hints to episodes 5 and 6 but no full-on spoilers as such

daisyboocantoo · 05/06/2019 05:53

@TheFirstOHN me too!

origamiunicorn · 05/06/2019 05:54

How did they manage to make it so current. Radio station had Doris day's death on it. Clever way of making it feel v real.

They also had a character in it who's baby had the first in vitro spinal correction, that was only on the news a day or so before.

exLtEveDallas · 05/06/2019 06:18

It was such a powerful ending. I sat in stunned silence for ages after. Damn you Russell T Davis! I was already wound up by them having their money/passport stolen, I didn't think it could get worse...

MauisHouseOnMaui · 05/06/2019 07:27

The plausibility of it all is what makes it so watchable, I know it's not real and this isn't the actual future but it's so believable that it could be and that even with all these huge world events going on the every day reality of work, watching TV, relationships, kids, family, etc still plods along.

Last night's episode was harrowing, I was rooting for Viktor and Daniel to make it home Sad

Medievalist · 05/06/2019 07:39

It's terrifyingly real because it takes real current issues a logical step further - makes it all frighteningly plausible and likely. The boat crossing and outcome was the most powerful drama I've seen in a long time. Deeply moving.

And we can see what could happen if the far right continues to take hold across Europe.

Dulra · 05/06/2019 07:52

Harrowing episode and giving a personality and story to someone dying like that just reminds us that those poor desperate souls that drown daily this day all have a story, a life, a worth and family left grieving 😢

The plausibility of it all is what makes it so watchable absolutely but 10 years ago even 5 years ago if we'd watched something like this none of it would have seemed plausible scary how quickly things have changed and the tide has turned and I thinl that's what makes it so chilling

SummerHouse · 05/06/2019 07:59

I was comforted only by Daniel having his shoes on as he was laid out on the beach. A welcome continuity error in an otherwise harrowing and an anxiety inducing episode...

MauisHouseOnMaui · 05/06/2019 08:07

I like to think Viktor put them on him after they washed up, to keep his feet dry.

SimonJT · 05/06/2019 08:07

I’m interested as to how his sisters react when they find out what has happened due to their far right views that have developed.

I used to play for the same club as Russells ex fiance, really nice guy.

SummerHouse · 05/06/2019 08:15

"I don't know." You have a beautiful mind mauis but how would he have found the shoes?

Etino · 05/06/2019 08:21

@SummerHouse I noticed that too, and had the same feeling, glad to be reminded it’s fiction.
Loved the big crisp line too!

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 08:48

I don't think either sister is far right @SimonJT. Edith is like those on the far left who'd vote for Trump just to disrupt the status quo and Rosie is like the disaffected who voted for Brexit because they wanted change and thought they had nothing to lose.

Callmesausage · 05/06/2019 09:45

Fantastic episode, I still can’t stop thinking about it,

To go from that then straight into the news with Trump wanting to get a piece of the NHS, too bloody scary!

Medievalist · 05/06/2019 09:56

Particularly upsetting is the thought that Daniel's death was inadvertently caused by his ex-husband. If the ex hadn't notified the authorities then Victor might possibly have managed to stay under the radar in the UK so he and Daniel would not have been in the boat.

BettysLeftTentacle · 05/06/2019 10:10

Well, I can’t be the only one had some strange dreams last night....

This time next week I think I’ll be a nervous wreck after watching the season 3 premiere of The Handmaids Tale and then this. Killing Eve will be a welcome relief and that’s saying something!

Medievalist · 05/06/2019 10:13

Yes Betty - I was struck by a report on the Canadian PM's unhappiness with the increasing anti-abortion movement in the USA. All very Handmaid's Tale!

peachgreen · 05/06/2019 10:34

Sounds ridiculous but I'm genuinely finding it hard to cope this morning after watching it. I just want to go home and cuddle my daughter. I can't bear the thought that people go through that horrific experience every day. Women, children, babies... the thought of my daughter suffering that way is unbearable. I feel totally powerless and more than a bit pathetic.

I know just what you mean. Had to give DS a big cuddle last night. It's made me feel really fragile and emotional, thinking about the plight of people in that situation. That's what clever writing can do.

SavageBeauty73 · 05/06/2019 11:19

My 16 year old sobbed. And she said she was still thinking about it this morning. Really thought provoking TV.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 05/06/2019 11:57

Peach I’m the same-I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m not sure I can watch the rest of the series (though I’m sure I will!) Sad

peachgreen · 05/06/2019 12:01

I read an interview with the writer yesterday who said Ep 4 is the most harrowing, so hopefully it will be an easier watch from now.

Figgygal · 05/06/2019 12:44

I had a feeling it was coming but horrible all the same

FlutterShite · 05/06/2019 13:02

peachgreen there's nothing ridiculous about feeling that way. We were watching a drama, but at the very same moment someone in the real world was going through that experience. Very sobering and upsetting to have to let that horror in.

There are parallels with The Handmaid's Tale - what looks to most of us in the UK as a dystopian future nightmare is current reality for some.
