Starts tonight 9pm
Family drama that flashes forward into the future.

How desperate must you be to hand over possibly every penny you've managed to scrape together to a stranger in the hope that they won't cheat you (despite the strong likelihood that they will) and then set sail in an overcrowded, unseaworthy dingy across 22 miles of rough sea. How utterly heartbreaking. What a cruel and unjust world we live in.

Medievalist · 05/06/2019 19:22

*dinghy 🙄

Asta19 · 05/06/2019 19:32

The thing is I have kinda been in this situation. My ex applied for a spouse visa and was refused (for a stupid reason imo). The home office actually told me to go and live in his country with him! A country that was notorious for treating women as second class citizens, you couldn’t leave the house without a man etc. Well, you could but it wasn’t safe. In the end we did the only thing we could do, we split up. Love does not conquer all! That’s why I could say with confidence that I would not have done what Daniel did. Yes it makes for a great story but in reality you just wouldn’t go to those lengths. So I probably viewed the whole scene through a bit of a biased lens.

Medievalist · 05/06/2019 19:47

Well Asta I'm sorry that happened to you, but the fact that you wouldn't go to those lengths doesn't mean nobody would.

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 19:55

Yes it makes for a great story but in reality you just wouldn’t go to those lengths

They obviously loved each other differently to how you and your ex did then.

Daniel absolutely wouldn't want Victor to go on his own ,so he went with him. Totally believable.

SimonJT · 05/06/2019 20:04

@BIWI

The processing centre had given Viktor dry clothes and a pair of trainers.

daisyboocantoo · 05/06/2019 20:09

@Medievalist the thing is, all of these people are the ones who can lay their hands on thousands, in an attempt to escape.

Those without that possibility are left behind.

It sucks every which way.

DrBuckles · 05/06/2019 20:14

Gosh, this show, it’s so much every week.

Can I ask a potentially inappropriate question? When Viktor said Daniel was in Rye, did he mean still on the beach? In circumstances like this, with lots of people who’ve died, where do they take the bodies, a hospital mortuary or funeral home or something?

Sorry if that’s really bad to ask but I don’t know much about what happens in awful situations like this.

daisyboocantoo · 05/06/2019 20:23

I guess they would take them to a mortuary until they can identify/process them.

SummerHouse · 05/06/2019 20:27

Drbuckles you do know they haven't actually died right? Wink

SummerHouse · 05/06/2019 20:30

I have been thinking about the shoes. It's my way of processing. What if Viktor pretends Daniel is him and he is Daniel so he can stay in the country and Daniel is somehow identified as Viktor based on the shoes...?!!?

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 20:32

SummerHouse

I was thinking the same

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2019 20:33

you do know they haven't actually died right?

But people do die like that, all the time, that's why the programme is so hard hitting.

cshelp · 05/06/2019 20:35

I've just watched last night's episode. I found it so overwhelmingly sad, while it's fiction, similar, worse even, happens. We hear about these boats getting caught or x amount of people dying and it's just a headline, a number, this graphically showed the human side to it. Devastating.

woodhill · 05/06/2019 20:36

Yes Summer good point

Not keen on Celeste. I think she was very rude to the grandmother tell her to shut up.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 20:38

I don't blame her, I think she's put up with years of passive-aggressive behaviour from Gran.

Medievalist · 05/06/2019 20:40

And she was so kind when the news of Daniel came through - ushering her to the car without needing to speak.

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/06/2019 20:46

I sobbed through the end of this episode. It's so sad that people live and die like this every single day.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 05/06/2019 20:54

Just watched ep4 and still crying. Dh looking at me like I am mad but it is the reality of the situation for so many people that I was actually upset over. I have genuinely never been so gripped by a program before.

thenightsky · 05/06/2019 21:02

I wonder if Victor will take Danny's identity to stay in the UK. I wouldn't blame him if he did.

Celeste is vile to the grandma, despite living in her home.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 05/06/2019 21:18

On another note, I've got to admire Rory Kinnear's commitment to the role - shaving his hair into an unflattering bald spot and stacking on some weight. Especially when his character now spends most of his time in Lycra cycling shorts!

Given that in Black Mirror he had sex with a pig I don’t think this was too much!

Callmesausage · 05/06/2019 22:03

Thought the grandmother’s reaction to Rory Kinnear’s character committing adultery was excellent - she was spot on asking him to leave. Also loved the line about the biggest crisp.

dropletsofrain · 05/06/2019 22:05

Such a harrowing episode.

Is the writing bad for Celeste or is she badly acted? She's really not a sympathetic character is she. The rest of it is brilliant.

CanILeavenowplease · 05/06/2019 22:22

Celeste lost her home and her means of earning a good living. She had to move in with her husband’s family with whom she had at best, a cold relationship. Her husband has been having an affair for sometime. She was worried about her child’s desire to ‘live in the cloud’. She no doubt felt trapped and frustrated and fed up. I think many people can relate to her and I suspect many extended families who live together experience similar. When the chips were down, the person she struggled with supported her (at the expense of a blood relative) and vice versa. Which kind of re-defines what makes family, perhaps?

Optimist1 · 05/06/2019 22:45

Very succinct explanation of Celeste's situation and demeanour, CanILeave - you express exactly how I felt about her.
