A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 4 (previous threads linked from OP of this one)

Some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Goblin (Viki)
Healer (Netflix)*
He is Psychometric (Viki)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Just Between Lovers (Viki)*
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)*
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)*
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Damn it, the link to the honorifics/terms of address article got lost in the paste. Here it is: www.90daykorean.com/oppa-hyung-noona-unnie/

Ooh nice new thread

bettys · 27/04/2019 09:28

Bea!! The Guy from Hwarang cam is great 💜💜!! So flirty, and yet somehow also in a world of his own 😍💜💜

boatyardblues · 27/04/2019 10:12

I’ve just been enjoying some JCW pics on the #WelcomebackJiChangWook hashtag that Bea posted at the end of the last thread. Some serious superfans out there!

I feel this thread is crying out for some kdrama faves: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3570577-can-we-have-a-thread-of-phwoar?msgid=86619938

I was planning to upload some pics to that thread late last night, but got waylaid in the results of my google image search for Kim Jae Wook. 🔥 Too many to choose from...

I’m so pissed off with the slow subtitling on My Fellow Citizens. It’s a great series - clever, funny, well written and acted. I can’t help thinking that some shows do less well in the ratings because viewers get frustrated and jump ship. It annoyed me so much, I checked the subtitling policy stuff on Viki. Seems weird they rely on volunteers when they charge for their service, although I suppose it means more gets translated than would do if they had to pay teams of subtitlers. But still.... 😩

OP posts:
bettys · 27/04/2019 10:53

I read somewhere that one of the reasons Dramafever went down was that they paid their subtitlers. I think (would need to check subbers names to be sure) that if a series proves popular more subbers get put on to it - Her Private Life seems to get subbed very quickly. Or maybe some are just more dedicated than others.

I've been dipping in and out of My Fellow Citizens but it hasn't really grabbed me somehow, although there is a lot to like.

bettys · 27/04/2019 10:56

I've had a look at the Phwoar thread and couldn't help but notice that they mostly look a bit beefy and hairy, it's a very different aesthetic. The balance needs redressing Wink

Non Boobage Site

I'm not falling down that GRRR JCW rabbit hole! I've got too many things to do!! 😂

Bea · 27/04/2019 11:08

Bettys! Yes! It's all too beefy for me!!

boatyardblues · 27/04/2019 11:21

Betty - How are you getting on with Korean Life on Mars? Is it any good?

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 27/04/2019 11:25

Thanks for that other streaming site, Bea - will have a look later. Smile

bettys · 27/04/2019 11:36

I like Life On Mars, it's funny and interesting, close enough to the original but with SK context . I had wifi issues & RL activities so haven't got as immersed in it but will be back to it this weekend.

I am wondering if I can wedge Jung Kyung-Ho into my top 5 oppas list.

I am slightly nervous about posting on the Phwoar thread!

bettys · 27/04/2019 11:39

If you give Life on Mars a go it dovetails quite nicely with The Tunnel. In LoM JKH goes from 2018 back to 1988, and in Tunnel CJH goes from 1980s to 2017 so you see it from both sides. Both made by OCN I think, as is Kill It, their stuff seems a little darker.

I am slightly nervous about posting on the Phwoar thread!

Me too.

Jung Kyung-Ho is on my oppas list.

There seems to be a heavy bias towards tattoos and fat-strong on the Phwoarr thread. Not sure how favourably our dandy kdrama oppas would be received.

Yes, there are some surprising photos in the results. I also like KJW with long hair and a man bun/ponytail, but I get the feeling the fat-strong fans on the other thread would not be as appreciative. 😕

On episode 6 of Life on Mars and it's very good! I can't remember exactly how the original BBC version went, but I think the storyline is a bit different.
