A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Thread 4 (previous threads linked from OP of this one)

Some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired:

Because This Is My First Life (Viki)*
Black (Netflix)*
Chicago Typewriter (Viki)*
Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Goblin (Viki)
Healer (Netflix)*
He is Psychometric (Viki)
Her Private Life (Viki)*
His Master’s Sun (Netflix)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Just Between Lovers (Viki)*
Last Train to Busan - film (Amazon Prime)
Live (Netflix)
Love from a Star (netflix)*
My Strange Hero (Viki)
Pinocchio (Netflix)
Pride & Prejudice (Netflix)*
Prison Playbook (Netflix)*
Romance is the Bonus Book (Netflix)*
She Was Pretty (Dramabus/Netflix)*
Something in the Rain (Netflix)
Strong Girl Bong Soon (Netflix)
Suspicious Partner (netflix)*
W (Viki & Netflix)*
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)*
While You Were Sleeping (viki)*
You are my Destiny (Netflix)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

But they've just aired the finale I think, so you may find it on another site.

JKH has just demonstrated a neat way of drinking soju by rolling the glass across his face 17.30 mins into ep 1 Missing 9 on Dramafast

bettys · 30/04/2019 21:30

All eps of Kill It are up on Dramafast

boatyard - I do want to but.......I need a bit of happy JKH first (although this is about a plabne crash so it could end in tears although at the moment it feels more like The Package

boatyardblues · 30/04/2019 21:36

Plane crash ⚖️ Drug kingpin? I’d say there’s not too much between them. Wink

The body count is probably similar, but this is darker.

bettys · 30/04/2019 21:58

Missing Nine is playing out like a comedy so far I have no idea what’s going to happen

boatyardblues · 30/04/2019 23:02

JKH’s right hand man in this is the 2ML/jealous love rival in Beating Again. It’s funny how the same combinations of actors/actresses pop up in the same things again and again.

OP posts:
bettys · 30/04/2019 23:06

In the drama he’s filming now the other ML is the same as Life in Mars ie wotsisname from Man to Man

bettys · 30/04/2019 23:08

JKH is flexing his comedy chops in Missing Nine

boatyardblues · 30/04/2019 23:36

Oh brilliant. I’ll check that out next. I like him in comedy. This is still dark and brooding.

This is what a spiral looks like, yes?

Sure is! And his new one should start soon, maybe July.
With long flopsy hair - nice!

The fight choreography in the library dust up in ep 10 is great. What a scene! The twists and turns have not let up - its proving to be quite a ride.

boatyardblues · 01/05/2019 08:32

I like the flopsy hair.

Hmmm well I have finished Psychometric I'll be interested to see what you all think

boatyardblues · 01/05/2019 12:43

I’ve not watched this week’s episodes, but I haven’t been wild about Psychometric from the outset - it’s been filler rather than killer for me. It’ll be a shame if its completely gone off the boil.

I am champing at the bit for the next episode of Her Private Life I just know I am going to end up watching minus subs

Bea · 01/05/2019 15:26

Psychometric! I'm watching tonight... !!! V. excited! I have really really enjoyed it!!! Boatyard! I love you and everything but we seem to differ on this!!!! (along with lovely PSJ!) Grin Wink

Though I'm worried about the tone of Bettys remark!!!! Noooooo! You will hear from me tonight!!!! Shock

boatyardblues · 01/05/2019 17:22

I am equally excited about Her Private Life - its my favourite thing on telly at the mo. I have a much greater appreciationof the FL as an actress in this - the central relationship is more balanced, so she’s not giving off a submissive ‘surrendered wife’ vibe (ick!) this time, compared with Secretary Kim.

Bea · 01/05/2019 17:32

Reading the soompi reports! 😂 😂... This looks fun! And it's on netflix!... And my favourite Strong Girl Bong Soon! 😂

boatyardblues · 01/05/2019 17:42

Betty - I forgot to mention that the relationships in Heartless City are grown-up and fully realised, if you get my drift. It also means the gang violence and brothel scenes are a bit grim, though in both romance and dodgy setting respects the strong stuff is implied, not shown.

boatyardblues · 01/05/2019 17:43

Too late

OP posts:

Yes Abyss looks good, didn't know it was going to be on Netflix that's great!

FL in Her Private Life is the same one as Healer, to be fair she normally plays more ballsy characters than Sec Kim who have a better dynamic with their male lead.

I'm rather enjoying Missing Nine it is a weird mix of comedy, thriller & mystery.

bettys · 01/05/2019 17:47

boatyard - you mean they actually have bedroom (sort of) scenes? [gasp]

bettys · 01/05/2019 17:51

Aaaaargh I feel the inexorable pull to watch Heartless City but I won't be able to catch you up now

boatyardblues · 01/05/2019 18:21

boatyard - you mean they actually have bedroom (sort of) scenes? [gasp]

Yes, actual bedroom scenes and proper passionate kissing, not the wooden mouth-smashing we’ve seen in the past.
