Anyone else caught this new series? The idea is that two architects present different approaches to the renovation/extension/remodel (so far, so humdrum) but then the ideas are presented to the couple in Virtual Reality so they can walk through the scheme to properly visualise how it works. I'd absolutely love to do this: I have no ability to visualise spaces presented on paper plans, especially sizes of rooms. (Unfortunately we have no budget to do it so I'll have to make do with property programmes for now!) There's only been one episode so far but I was impressed by how different the two architects' ideas and styles were to one another (not just your bifold doors and steel supported open plan kitchen that seems to be the go-to for every George Clark and Kirsty Allsop plan). I also like the presenter, who I'd never seen before.

I think the house was in a cul de sac so maybe quite private out front. I got the feeling that the mum was fairly desperate to impress her coffee friends.....

£45,000 was a teeny tiny budget, not surprised they went over it and all open plan, but they were the kind of family who look like they want be together. No TV family I thought.

I'm glad they factored in the impact on upstairs of re arranging the stairs but I wanted to see the downstairs studio/bedroom.

HairyToity · 16/05/2019 08:21

I preferred her furniture before he rearranged. The arrogance! I'm sure she will put it back though. She seemed very lovely.

HairyToity · 16/05/2019 08:23

I thought they probably ran out of money with downstairs studio. One to show in a couple of years time when budget allows.

He does love a bench caravan seat doesn't he?! I thought it looked like a shop.

Other posters have mentioned building regs, and DH (who is a builder), says this every week, that the design would not pass inspection, so I dont understand how they get done at all?

MrsBlondie · 16/05/2019 14:42

Roberts designs all the same.
Open plan with no privacy.
Bench seats but no normal sofas.
Id like to revisit in a year and see how they live in them.

beanaseireann · 16/05/2019 18:33

I hate bench seating. It's so uncomfortable. I love a dining chair with arms. Smile

HairyToity · 17/05/2019 08:07

I'd like to have a nosy in the architects own homes.

Cedilla · 17/05/2019 10:24

I just had a nosy on Robert’s Instagram and he appears to have had a role in GoT.....not sure whether it was a speaking part or whether he just installed bench seating in Winterfell castle.

Cedilla · 17/05/2019 10:26

The evidence here Grin

MrsBlondie · 17/05/2019 14:11

@cedilla Grin at bench seating at Winterfell.

God, he just gives me the rage

RebootYourEngine · 19/05/2019 16:03

I can't believe they went for Roberts design in the last one. An open plan music room 🙄.

I would like to see a revisit in a years time. It will be interesting to see if they have worked practically.

CoolShoeshine · 19/05/2019 22:14

It was a crazy waste of money. The music room didn’t need an architects expertise - basically painted, carpeted, new windows and more seating. That could have all been done relatively cheaply. They wanted it warmer and more inviting- how was making it open plan supposed to do that? The whole space will cost a fortune to heat and most of the heat will escape up the stairs. The mix of 60s and new fittings jarred a bit too - particularly at the front of the house - all that brown stained cladding next to the black windows. Also I’m all for retaining original features but that staircase looked poor quality. They’d have been better to keep it in the same location and get a new one.
The only bit of Roberts design I liked was the sunken seating but they didn’t have that. I think they may have devalued their house.
However I have to admit that I preferred the furniture how Robert arranged it but the lady’s face was a treat, glad the programme makers didn’t edit that out.
