Anyone else caught this new series? The idea is that two architects present different approaches to the renovation/extension/remodel (so far, so humdrum) but then the ideas are presented to the couple in Virtual Reality so they can walk through the scheme to properly visualise how it works. I'd absolutely love to do this: I have no ability to visualise spaces presented on paper plans, especially sizes of rooms. (Unfortunately we have no budget to do it so I'll have to make do with property programmes for now!) There's only been one episode so far but I was impressed by how different the two architects' ideas and styles were to one another (not just your bifold doors and steel supported open plan kitchen that seems to be the go-to for every George Clark and Kirsty Allsop plan). I also like the presenter, who I'd never seen before.

Instead of a cold music room they'll now have a huge cold space downstairs.

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2019 20:54

No nipping downstairs in your undies.

PJMasksAreOnTheirWay · 14/05/2019 20:55

Her face!

lalalonglegs · 14/05/2019 20:55

The windows all along the front wall make the house so exposed to passers-by as well. I just don't understand why they went for this design, does the man of the family even get a dedicated office space?

HeavenlyEyes · 14/05/2019 20:57

They just made a huge drafty kitchen with airport lounge seating. That the whole street can see into. How odd. - and noisy.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/05/2019 20:59

Yep. More fecking bench seating from Robert - and no comfortable seating anywhere. Plus all the greasy dirt from the kitchen is going to end up all over the musical instruments, which they will not like - especially the piano.

And yes - where is the bloke supposed to work? Where do any of them get any privacy? And who is the downstairs bedroom/cell for?

The man is an eejit. He is making designs that prove how whacky and out there he is - and completely forgetting the human beings who have got to live in his showroom.

TheSpottedZebra · 14/05/2019 20:59

She's trying to convince herself re the 33% overspend.

jay55 · 14/05/2019 20:59

I suppose being so exposed means you'll keep on top of the tidying.

flissfloss65 · 14/05/2019 21:00

I laughed when Robert talked about the staircase now being private! That whole room is open to the road with no blind in sight.

HollowTalk · 14/05/2019 21:00

That architect should have factored in the rewiring costs and the structural engineer's costs, ffs! He's sitting there as though they discovered those costs for themselves.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/05/2019 21:00

And I forgot the carpet on the ceiling. Mustard carpet. What is he on?

That is going to get filthy from all the kitchen yuck too.

Cedilla · 14/05/2019 21:09

At night it must be lit up like a beacon for miles around. You'd be permanently on show. Each to his own and all that but....hmm. Not for me.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/05/2019 21:16

Really surprised they went for Robert's.
I agree that after filming,, they'll put up blinds in the front windows, and there will be at least one stud wall up by Christmas.
He never puts a door into the garden. I guess it's cos he lives on an island in Northern Ireland, sitting outside is something you do in a coat and wellies.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/05/2019 21:27

Thank god they didn’t put the mustard carpet on the ceiling, and kept some proper, comfortable chairs!

HairyToity · 14/05/2019 21:45

I loved the end result. I thought it needed some blinds, but they've gone over budget so it'll need to wait till they can afford luxuries such as blinds.

I thought the lounge was a decent distance from kitchen, and with a decent extractor shouldn't get too greasy.

I assumed the box bedroom became an office. They didn't show us beyond open plan room, so we don't know what they did.

I don't think Robert is very good at budgeting though.

BitOfFun · 15/05/2019 02:43

It’s like a bloody caravan.

YES!!

That seating he does is driving me potty- he makes every design look like a waiting room.

BitOfFun · 15/05/2019 03:53

I've just had a quick look at Robert's website- he's quite fond of himself, isn't he? Grin

IHeartArya · 15/05/2019 08:30

He gives me the rage. His designs are all the same- rubbish. Not at all practical. Male architects & interior designers have no idea about every day living or practicality. Bitter bitter experience. You’ll love it. No I don’t.

Rant over.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 15/05/2019 10:03

Laura's designs don't have the same "show- off" factor, but they still include really clever architect touches that most people wouldn't think of.
I loved those narrow slot windows from hall to kitchen.
I think she also has a better grasp of practicalities - she actually makes stuff not just designs it.
Mind you, they all seem to do an awful lot of building work for very little money and this is the first one where they have gone way over budget

beanaseireann · 15/05/2019 11:17

I love Laura's designs and would use her as an architect if I was in need of an architect.
She is super practical, unlike others Wink

BlueCowWonders · 15/05/2019 11:25

I’m wondering what’ll happen once winter sets in and it’s dark at 4pm. I think they’ll feel so exposed with the expanse of bare windows.
I loved Laura’s design for this house with the outside connection between kitchen and music room.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/05/2019 13:29

I agree, @BlueCowWonders - and I know that they are designing a house for the people to live in, not for them to sell, but I do think that Laura’s designs are going to be more saleable, if they do want or need to sell in the future.

beanaseireann · 15/05/2019 16:41

I agree BlueCowWonders

Goatrider · 15/05/2019 19:10

I'm just watching this now. It feels like a spoof!

I'd like to see an update in a year or so.

PigOnStilts · 15/05/2019 23:15

Don't think the lady appreciated him rearranging her new room like that, he's a total CF
