HH is just a treat for mums. Nothing to do with kids.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/05/2019 00:55

They all look amazing as Vikings. Every single one is gorgeous. Literally.

7Days · 26/05/2019 01:29

I'm finding this newfound crush really debilitating.

sashh · 26/05/2019 04:07

Dobby it was me who said about Mary being burnt as a witch but that's just my guess - Pat alludes to her talking about her trial in their 'show and tell' type session but concluded it was 'too soon' grin Then there is the smell of burning when she walks through someone alive, plus roughly right historical period and lots of references to Satan.

Pedant alert.

Witches in England were hung, it was heretics who were burned. Scotland burned witches though.

MissFitton · 26/05/2019 09:00

@sashh that was me - I happily stand corrected Grin

Grin at they're all gorgeous as vikings. Literally Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/05/2019 09:28

I think kitty is dressed in the correct period costume. She speaks of getting hung for less, and the way she speaks isn’t modern.

sashh · 26/05/2019 10:49

MissFitton

I'm fairly sure the character will have been burned as a witch, which is a bit disappointing from a horrible history point of view.

Another thing I don't think is thought through is when the head (Robin with different make up) talks to his body = how can the body hear him?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/05/2019 10:50

I don’t think his body can hear him....isn’t that the joke?

FoxSquadKitten · 26/05/2019 11:26

His body can't hear him that's why it doesn't pick the head up

AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/05/2019 12:09

Burning was one of the punishments for heresy and this talks about a woman being burned in East Anglia:

www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/Witches-in-Britain/

A heart carved on a wall in the market place atKings Lynnis supposed to mark the spot where the heart of Margaret Read, a condemned witch who was being burnt at the stake, leapt from the flames and struck the wall.

sashh · 26/05/2019 15:19

AnneEyhtMeyer

OOoooooo interesting, it could be one of two women. Although I do find the idea of a heart wandering around without a body a little, er, unbelievable.

Icantreachthepretzels · 26/05/2019 15:45

Why her dress isn't burnt - because burning was such a horrible way to die, executioners sometimes took pity on the victims and smothered them/ strangled them before the flames really took hold. Mary may have only been slightly singed at the point of death.

they're all gorgeous as vikings. Literally

I see what you did there Grin

MissFitton · 26/05/2019 16:08

Y'see this thread is turning out to be educational not just about which Horrible Historian you fancy. Grin Am I right in thinking that sometimes they would give the burn-ee (as it were) a small bag of gunpowder to drop into the flames so they could get it over quickly as it really was a horrible way to go?

notacooldad · 26/05/2019 16:30

I'm loving the over analysing of a 30min BBC sitcom!!
It's funny that people are trying to work out the backstories of people that are just characters made up by the scriptwriters.
🤣🤣

Icantreachthepretzels · 26/05/2019 16:37

I think I might have heard that before MissFitton ... I'm not sure I'd rather explode myself than wait to burn to death, though - pretty grim either way!

SoupDragon · 26/05/2019 16:39

It would have warrented the 9:30 time slot if they'd shown Mary thoroughly burnt!

LarryGreysonsDoor · 26/05/2019 16:55

Bum and chips made me laugh more than someone staring down the barrel of 50 should

If ‘bum and chips’ doesn’t make you laugh at any age then you might as well give up.

GermaineBunbury · 26/05/2019 21:06

Over-thinkers will be thrilled to know that the German pilots have names. They're Pilot Wolfgang and Pilot Helmut.

LIZS · 26/05/2019 21:11

How did you discover that @GermaineBunbury ?! Do the cellar ghosts have names too?

OP posts:
AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/05/2019 21:17

I saw their names on the IMDB cast list. I love that they've got names.

GermaineBunbury · 26/05/2019 21:24

Yes! IMDB is your friend :-)

Well it is MN. The cottage pie thread went on for about a month (slight exaggeration).

I've also heard about the powder bag round the neck.
