A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but there other sources, including Dramabus and AmazonPrime.

Previous Threads, with discussion of what we’ve enjoyed and what to avoid:

Some suggestions for shows that we’ve enjoyed - those marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired:

Don’t Dare to Dream (Netflix, or as Jealousy Incarnate on Viki)*
Fight For My Way (Viki/Drama bus)*
Goblin (Viki)
Healer (Netflix)*

I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Just Between Lovers (Viki)

We have some lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members who pop in from time to time to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

If you want to know your oppas from your unnis try this helpful guide to Korean terms of address and honorifics.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, film and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

We have a few frequently used acronyms:
FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead
ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/MLis too thick to realise how much better the 2ML/2FL is)

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but only after using the full title & acronym together. Some of the regular favourite actors have been abbreviated too for speed/efficiency, although “him off Black” seems to have stuck for Song Seung-Heon. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

❤️❤️❤️ Just between lovers... Finished!... I loved it!!.... Think it might me even be in my top 5!... Just thought it was beautifully and touchingly done... And love a self destructive hero! Really loved the leads as well... Sigh!... Why is it at the end of every drama I'm convinced it's the best one I've seen so far!
And Bettys... Yes! 😍❤️ to the tousled haired ML! 😍😊😚

boatyardblues · 17/03/2019 11:44

Is it Just Between Lovers where all and sundry turn up to offer a kidney? I liked that.

Yes! A liver... Just purely because he is so well loved by all... And a good person though he fails to see it within himself! 😩
About the shopping mall collapse... Think I just really liked the realness of the filming... Colours... Locations... Acting... Don't get me wrong!... I generally Iove the emoji filled... Cartoon sound effects of a crazy bonkers drama... But... I found Just Between Lovers... Just very heart felt and grounded... If that makes sense! 😁😂👍

boatyardblues · 17/03/2019 12:15

Oh yes, I posted on the previous thread about the real shopping mall collapse it was based on. Just awful. 😞

I'll have to go back and reread "the archives"!... 😁👍

Tousled hair is the baddy prosecutor in Chief Kim, but I still suspect vulnerability somewhere ❤️

Waiting for the final ep of RIABB to drop this afternoon then have a double binge

Bea · 17/03/2019 15:09

Last ep? Of Romance??... Last one? Does that mean it's ALL up on netflix!?
Arrgghhh! I was going to have a break as there's been far too many late nights and neglectful behaviour!...., 🤣😱

boatyardblues · 17/03/2019 15:12

I wondered how many episodes of Romance were left, because yesterday’s started tying up loose ends. I am kind of relieved if I’ll be off a weekly drip feed sooner rather than later. I have no idea how we managed in the old days before streaming and boxsets.

Boatyard... Thanks for that link! Very depressing and unbelievable how they managed to get away with all the cut corners!... ☹️

Bea · 17/03/2019 15:30

new drama from Tousled Hair Lee Jun Ho
Another lawyer proving innocence of Father?... Oh go on then!... 😂 😂... Though I don't think the Tousled Hair makes an appearance! Shock

bettys · 17/03/2019 18:42

Aw I've just realised I was watching with a smile on my face all the way through the last episode of RIABB.

Lovely stuff.

Bea · 17/03/2019 20:15

Rubbing my hands with Glee at the prospect of a Toasty LJS drama that I haven't seen and is ❤️👍according to you two!!...
There's now 2 eps of Psychometric on Viki with eng subs... Might also throw myself into that one!!
Too many dramas!... Not enough time!! 😭

boatyardblues · 17/03/2019 20:22

Aw I've just realised I was watching with a smile on my face all the way through the last episode of RIABB.

Same here. It delivered in every way. ⭐️

Was looking up the cast of Hospital Ship on wiki. The guy who plays the Korean Medicine doctor was fairly recently convicted after sexually harrassing a young woman and pulling a knife on her when she screamed for help. He’s currently doing his national service, which I suppose is one way of keeping him out of the public eye while the fuss dies down. 🙄 Suffice it to say it’s coloured my view of him in the 2ML role. 🤮

I very much like the home used for the dinner with the hospital director in ep 10, which has a Roman style atrium and water trough in the centre and covered outdoor areas. I would love to live in a house with this kind of indoor-outdoor space.

The cases in Hospital Ship give glimpses into all sorts of lives. In ep 13, there are the two older women abalone divers, one of them a free diver. The central plot is almost an added bonus. Smile

I may give it a go after Chief Kim, more for the incidentals than anything as you make it sound so interesting!

boatyardblues · 18/03/2019 17:10

It’s very gentle and meanders nicely, Betty. It’s also sunny and scenic. DH and I have a name for these types of show: warm bath telly.

Sort of putting off watching Romance.. Saving it for a rainy day! ❤️
Having a watch of Yong Pal... Just started... See how far we get...!

boatyardblues · 18/03/2019 19:33

I’m intrigued by a character in the lady diver episode who has changed her name from Geun-ja to Geun-hui to try and shake off her “hillbilly” roots. That’s always a challenge when you don’t know the culture and which names are deemed ‘posh’ vs ‘working class’, unusual or common. Also, I’d love to know which names sound nice in Korean and which names sound harsh or are harder to pronounce. I have a Welsh-speaking friend who vetoed several of the Welsh baby names her English husband picked out of their Welsh baby name book because they didn’t sound as nice to a Welsh-speaker.

boatyardblues · 18/03/2019 19:34

I am fervently hoping some of our Korean/ex-pat in Korea posters are still dipping in from time to time & can help with this one.

Yong Pal... Lots and lots of arterial spray! 😂😂

boatyardblues · 18/03/2019 19:50

Lots and lots of arterial spray!

Tut!

In Hospital Ship, the young male doctor had post-it reminders about follow-ups he needed to do with other patients on the wall of his consulting room, which provided a plot-enabling talking point with the adult daughter of one of his patients. 🙄 Has no-one heard of patient confidentiality on the —-Love—- Hospital Ship?

Awww! Ms Jo from Healer is in Yong Pal!... Heloooooo Ms Jo!... Is Healer with you?! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
