And so it begins!

I must admit I love this programme mostly to watch the parents Blush Strong contenders for the unhinged parenting award are the PHd in Chemistry mum or the Twins' mum. She clearly thinks the world of her son and her daughter is a not so close second.

OP posts:

@cocomelon23

Odds are that in a few years time she’s going to end up on the stately homes thread. Poor kid. Sad

NCforthisoneb · 02/03/2019 20:08

Also found it really creepy how she seems to want to “programme” William, making his chosen subject HER specialty rather than find something HE has passion for. Like she needs to monitor every thought and piece of knowledge he has so that she can, in her own words, “live every moment with him”. Unhealthy!

Shimy · 02/03/2019 20:10

That 'golden boy' comment was awful! i think time just stood still for his sister as she looked on......Sad

purpleme12 · 02/03/2019 20:13

I'm sure it's something his sister is used to but of course now it's on tele for everyone to see as well

EasterEggHunt2019 · 02/03/2019 20:13

William's mum - well what can I say? "I love him more than everything in the entire world, he's amazing, he's a star, he'll always be my golden boy" (boak)
Poor daughter. Does the woman even realise she has a daughter? Hmm

Imagine William bringing his first girlfriend home Grin

So glad to see Nushi win. Totally deserved! What a brilliant self-motivated girl.

RandomlyChosenName · 02/03/2019 20:14

So glad Nishi won. William seemed nice, but his Mum...! Hi sue poor sister. His mum just announced he was her favourite child on national tv Sad.

Completely agree there should be more working out and logic questions on the program- Williams’s progress shows how much it is just a memory test.

Glad Nishi won because she is actually interested and cares about her subject and also is driven herself, with supportive parents not pushy ones who think their child’s achievements are theirs.

Shimy · 02/03/2019 20:17

Easter Grin I can only imagine.

JuniorAsparagus · 02/03/2019 20:26

Maybe it will be his first boyfriend. She might prefer that.
Glad Nishi won, although William was a lot more likeable than some in past series.

EasterEggHunt2019 · 02/03/2019 20:27

Agree that there should have been a logic/pattern recognition round.

Intelligence is not just about relentless memorisation Confused

Cagliostro · 02/03/2019 20:32

Ooh I didn’t realise it was on again. I recently saw adverts wanting participants (needless to say my kids are nowhere near genius :o) so I thought it must be a way off but that must be for next year.

Shimy · 02/03/2019 20:34

Infact Williams mum might just be an MNer. Afterall, all the dc geniuses are here surely.

EasterEggHunt2019 · 02/03/2019 20:35

Judging by the weather, the rounds must have been filmed during the summer. Also, Connor's badge said "Our Child Genius 2018". Loved Connor and his 'normal' parents Smile

EasterEggHunt2019 · 02/03/2019 20:35

I'm pretty sure William's mum is here, judging by a couple of posts.

RhodaChrosite · 02/03/2019 20:38

EasterEggHunt that was it - “I love him more than everything in the entire world” was what Williams mum said. I just wanted to cry for his sister at that moment. It was so spontaneous and seemed to be exactly what she thinks regarding her children . That poor poor girl.

BartonHollow · 02/03/2019 21:32

If Williams Mum was reading, I'd have words of advice, but I'm fairly certain she wouldn't take them

zen1 · 02/03/2019 21:50

Williams's mum seemed to almost culture a symbiotic relationship with him. It was very strange and disconcerting to watch. God only knows how her daughter feels.

ErictheGuineaPig · 02/03/2019 21:51

Just caught up now - I'm so pleased Nishi won. I was watching it with my daughter so it was great for her to see a girl doing so well in science and maths. I also thought she deserved it the most because she was so self-driven. She will do great things in the future I'm sure. You can't help but wonder how William will cope as he reaches adulthood. At some point he's going to need to find his own motivation and read things himself.

Cloudtree · 02/03/2019 22:09

I'm pretty sure William's mum is here, judging by a couple of posts.

If that’s referring to my posts I can assure you I am not William’s mum. My child is at school with him though.

I haven’t seen the final programme (although knew the result). William has been getting a lot of stick at school for the lucky pants comment. His sister has been silent about it all apparently.

ErictheGuineaPig · 02/03/2019 22:21

To be fair, with regards to William's sister, nobody's siblings featured on it. They were all just silent bystanders. When I take my kids to support their siblings in whatever competition or concert they're in its the same. They're along for the ride or to support but in that moment it isn't about them. For all we know William's sister could be gifted at something else and he's dragged round supporting her.

ColeHawlins · 02/03/2019 22:23

I must admit I love this programme mostly to watch the parents Strong contenders for the unhinged parenting award are the PHd in Chemistry mum or the Twins' mum. She clearly thinks the world of her son and her daughter is a not so close second.

This is why I can't watch it. Everything I've ever read about it sounds like emotionally abusive & "stage mom" parenting.

wingsandstrings · 02/03/2019 22:38

Nishi was astounding. It was a well deserved victory. There is a part of me that worries for her that perhaps she might struggle with EQ and this might cause her difficulties in life (eg. her comment about how other competitors showing emotion was showing weakness, and her seeming belief that this was something they had control over. Her own Father said that she is is slightly robotic). She seems capable of achieving amazing things, and I hope that she is appreciated for what she has to offer.
William seems extremely sweet: always smiling and a very good loser. A couple of times the camera catches him with other contestants and he is always saying something lovely - eg. with Ben we heard him say, 'wow, I could never have coped in that sudden death round, well done' - very supportive. He was also really polite and gentle with his Mum - despite her rather awkward mannerisms - much more polite than many other contestants with their parents. In that sense I think people are being rather unkind about his Mother, she clearly raised an empathetic and good natured boy. Also, remember, we don't see the questions they ask from behind the camera - they don't ask about her daughter, they probably say something immensely leading like 'how brilliant do you think your son is?' I would say give her a break, why are we so keen to judge on the basis of a few awkward comments clearly set up and highly editing to make her look as provocative as possible?

ErictheGuineaPig · 02/03/2019 22:41

Yes, I agree wings. Every time she complimented him he returned the compliment, which was quite sweet.

RandomlyChosenName · 02/03/2019 23:11

But William's mum said "I love HIM more than anything else in the world". Not my children. Not them. But him. There is no question or editing excuse for that.

William is a nice boy, I'm sure. And his Mum is probably generally very nice too. I do t think she was being deliberately nasty or even thinking about what she was saying. But her poor daughter.

PickAChew · 03/03/2019 00:02

GarJun's glasses are way too big for him.

Ishal's uncle is a dickhead. She knows it.

PickAChew · 03/03/2019 00:07

And William's mum is seriously anxious. Someone commented on the drawn eyebrows. Alopecia? They look no worse than slug brows.
