And so it begins!

I must admit I love this programme mostly to watch the parents Blush Strong contenders for the unhinged parenting award are the PHd in Chemistry mum or the Twins' mum. She clearly thinks the world of her son and her daughter is a not so close second.

I'm confused by the flag remembering task. They had a stack of 100 flag cards, but did they have the names of the countries as well, or was knowing the flags part of it as well?

If they were told the names, then they didn't really need to remember the actual flags then it's more about remembering the names of 100 countries in order?

Maybe I'm overthinking this!

JuniorAsparagus · 27/02/2019 22:27

I really like Connor. He's a credit to you and your husband @Totty.
I'm on the second episode. Guessing the lovely Dan is going. I like him and his parents too.
William's mum, wow! Does she know she has a daughter to??. Poor girl.
Phone gate is just happening.. Who was it?!

PetalPearl · 28/02/2019 14:16

Convinced this type of programme is made just to weed out the downright disturbing odd bods lurking behind the doors in the UK 😳 Do some of those pushy parents actually check their appearance in the mirror before they leave their house ? 💄🤡😳

SauvignonBlanche · 28/02/2019 20:28

Connor’s lovely! Smile

purpleme12 · 28/02/2019 20:29

Ah man I feel for Connor now bit painful

purpleme12 · 28/02/2019 20:32

William basically wouldn't be in this if it wasn't for his mum

MissDemelzaCarne · 28/02/2019 20:36

Ishal’s uncle is scary!

Callmejudith · 28/02/2019 20:42

Totty you should be so proud of Connor, he is lovely!

Michael's mum is a loon, same with William's. Really really not sure about the uncle!

I like the girl Nishi (?), she seems very sweet.

I cried too when Dan got knocked out

Petalflowers · 28/02/2019 20:56

Love this programme but haven’t managed to watch any yet until tonight.

Just seen Totty on tv.

Callmejudith · 28/02/2019 20:58

Awww Connor! Well done that lad!

LIZS · 28/02/2019 20:58

Sorry Connor is out, less so Michael.

rockingthelook · 28/02/2019 20:58

Connor seems a lovely boy, but oh Lord some of the other kids are really going to have issues later in life, seeing Michael how crushed he was at such a young age makes me want to whisk him away for a bit of fun, his Mum needs to lighten up, she comes across as crazy

NoraEphronsneck · 28/02/2019 20:59

Just watching Conor's round now.

gettingtherequickly · 28/02/2019 21:10

Oh dear me.

gettingtherequickly · 28/02/2019 21:11

Sorry, watching behind, Michael is up and being cocky.

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 28/02/2019 22:01

Bad luck Connor, but we all liked you the best!

BartonHollow · 28/02/2019 22:30

Just finished it now

I have nothing against Michael he is just a boy

But I am always relieved when the children of the over invested PFB extremely dramatic and pushy parents go out

Not because the child has a lesson they need to learn (not always anyway) but the parent does

In that regard - a shame for Connor and family as they have entered in the right spirit and conducted themselves appropriately

Tottygirl71 · 28/02/2019 22:57

THANK YOU EVERYONE....Connor has had such a great experience... he will always be OUR GENIUS THE SNOTTY FROM TOTTY xxxxxxx..

I agree. The kids who are pushing themselves rather than being pushed by parents are the ones more likely to do well as adults. Most good jobs even academic ones also involve getting on with the public or media. Having a good memory will only take you so far. I think Connor will do well. I like William despite his mother slowing down his reading ability. He seems to have more in his life than just learning stuff and seems to enjoy it. Mum needs to get a life of her own though.

BartonHollow · 28/02/2019 23:02

I'm quite surprised that the way in which William's mother has deskilled him hasn't hindered him in the contest as yet

2rebecca · 28/02/2019 23:14

He maybe reads secretly under the covers like I used to!
The competition is maybe good for giving these very bright kids a sense of perspective. They are used to being the cleverest child in their circle with lots of adoring relatives. Seeing other equally bright kids will be good for them. I hope they make some friends there.
I was a bright child at my school and got a reality check at university where I was suddenly just average and needed to work hard just to stay in the middle

RandomlyChosenName · 01/03/2019 08:24

Sad to see Connor go. He came across as a really nice boy. I am sure he’ll do well in life with an attitude like his- which is much more important than pushy parents cramming you to win the competition.

Congratulations Tottygirl71 - you and your OH are right to be very proud of him. You should be proud of yourselves too x

nolanscrack · 01/03/2019 08:50

Well done Connor,,a bright child that took part because he wanted to supportive parents not deluded pushy parents, hell be fine ,a credit to his family,,it would be fascinating to do follow up programmes,as was said above for some of these children its a reality check.,its little more than a memory test.,and seemed to be little more than a plug for mensa this year.
Our boys are at school with two previous contestants, both of whom did very well, one of whom got most of the media attention that year and guess what..yes they are in the top twenty or thirty in the year but thats it,they dont stand out and theyve discovered that there are lots of clever people in the world, they just dont go on a tv programme.
